Can’t help but be in awe of what you do. Looks like a fun group of handsome fellas you were working with today. Only thing missing in this video was the superstar Meg. Loved the diverse camera shots including the close up shearing and the drone. Hoping Lizzie is in a nice cool shady place relaxing with her feet up growing her little one.

Do the sheep become more complacent about shearing as they get older? (oh, here we go again) Or is it more breed dependent? Loved the video (and your hair).

Good question, generally the older sheep are a bit calmer at shearing time having been shorn once or more times before, and the ones that are being shorn for the first time are little be more flighty. But it is also breed dependent, some breeds are just well known for being lively or a little nasty when being shorn.

There are lots of opinions on how to treat these, we would try to avoid trimming bad feet now and they would have antibiotics to treat. Maggots, I would recommend shearing the whole sheep if not at least the effected area and quite a bit around the affected area too and maggots can easily move from the bit you have shorn to a new woolly bit, if the maggots haven't got into the skin you could just closely monitor the sheep and the maggots would mostly die. Depending on the stage of fly strike using using something like crovect to kill maggots would need to be approached with lots of caution as using this coupled with the shock a badly infected sheep could actually kill it. A chat with your vet would also be a good idea on how to deal with these issues.

i had em all sheared about 3 weeks ago ive used mineral oil with citronella on any fly strike and covect for the flies in general its theire hoofs i find the worst im actually a nurse and have 14 rescue sheep so im learning every day and am what youd call a google farmer lol so all this advice is gold thank you for your help

It would really depend a bit on when you lamb. We started lambing first week of April and shore ours just this weekend and the wool came off well, probably could have be shorn a week or two earlier if we wanted. We crovect the ewes early May and it seems to have done its job up until shearing.

Cammy - Two questions 1 - What is up with the shoes used for shearing? and 2- Do all professional Sheep Shearers have uniforms - I noticed the stylish pant and jersey top with stripes. Great stuff.

The shoes are called moccasins, they are either made from leather or felt and are designed so that we can have close contact with the sheep and really feel where they are which helps us with control, the shoes also help with grip when shearing and having no heel reduces the pressure on our backs. To a certain degree we pretty much all wear the same clothes, doubled layered jeans, with some new developments in recent years using a lighter weight fabric, and then a singlet on top, lots of different singlets around you will pick some up at shows you go to or contractors you work for.

Thanks Peggy, we would do a bit of both here the main mule flock where we use the texel ram, all lambs will go for meat. The cheviot group using a blue face leicester ram would be a bit of both where we keep some of the females for breeding and the rest go for meat.
