In this video I will show you how I built a sheet metal and offcuts storage rack. For a long time now my sheet metal and offcuts have just been stacked up against various walls in the workshop. This is a very in-efficient way of storing them as most of the time I have no idea what I actually have. When I need a piece of material I often have to move a lot of other materiel to get to the piece I want. The sheet metal and offcuts storage rack solves this problem by neatly organising and segregating the various materials into there own separate compartments. Primarily it will be used as a sheet metal storage rack but I will also use it as a lumber rack as well.
Having the sheet metal and offcuts storage rack on wheels makes it mobile and easy to move around in the workshop. It also means I can store it right up against a wall to take up less space then just pull it out when I need to get something off the back side of the rack.
Materials:
45mm x 45mm x 3mm steel angle
100mm casters
12mm hardwood plywood
Hammerite smooth blue paint
Light oak quick dry wood stain
3mm 6013 electrodes
I hope you enjoyed this video. Remember to SHARE & SUBSCRIBE.
Cheers.

Really neat how you joined the angle irons @ 1:24. I'll definitely give that a try the next time I play around with angle irons! Great job!

Cheers glad you enjoyed it and got something out of it. Angle is not really a very exciting material to work with but you can do some funky stuff with it. 👍👍

That saw is awesome! I’ve always wanted a compound miter that would handle metal!

It's a bit of a beast, I need to get a TCT blade for it really as it is meant to be a cold cut saw. Works ok hot cutting but but there are a couple of issues using it hot.

Nice bit of kit if you have the space! Reckon you could do with some rollers on the bottom though?
@Handmadeextreme
@Handmadeextreme 6 жыл бұрын
I thought about putting rollers on the bottom instead of the angle but decided not to. The way I see it is that once you have the first heavy sheet on the rollers then they stop turning as you load additional sheets. Or, if they keep turning they are trying to push the sheets you have already loaded out of the other end of the rack. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting. 👍👍

Very nice. Unfortunately I don't have enough room for a big storage rack like that. I do need to do something though; storing various sections - flat, round, tube etc so you can easily see what you have is a perennial problem.

I feel your pain. I have some adjustable racking screwed to the wall for the long thin stuff. It works quite well. I think I got it from Screwfix if it remember correctly. Only £15 or so. Cheers 👍😀

Hi good job making that rack. I am wondering what type of projects can we expect to see in the future? Just workshop improvements or also some other things?
@Handmadeextreme
@Handmadeextreme 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Most of the projects at the moment are 'workshop infrastructure' projects. I will be doing a few restorations over the coming months and do have a few exotic projects in the pipeline using some of the machines and things in the workshop coming up.

Welcome to the channel. I think it was about £60 for the steel angle. I already had the wheels and the plywood. Glad you are enjoying the videos. Thanks for the support.

Nice storage rack. 👍👍 It may be an artifact of the camera's wide angle lens, but are the middle beams sagging from to much weight? you could add a couple of more casters in the middle, or weld in some sheet to improve the moment of inertia 😜. Very nice work! Thanks for the ideas
@Handmadeextreme
@Handmadeextreme 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers, I think it might be a tiny bit but it may also be part of the lens and also the floor not being very flat. I actually had to take it all down to make space in the shop when I had a re arrange a year or so back. I do miss it though as it makes finding material so much easier.

Finally you came to your senses by using stick welding. Wanted to rip my hair out seeing you tig weld normal framing which takes forever and is tons more expensive since you use argon gas. If you ever have thin metal/tubing use 2mm electrodes and bobs your uncle. Tig welding is only needed when you need looks over strength. But if you want to build strong stuff like frames you can't beat the penetration of stick welding. Remember most of the worlds buildings/pipelines are built using stick.
@Handmadeextreme
@Handmadeextreme 6 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. My main issue is I was never taught to stick weld. My MIG and TIG are reasonably good but my Stick leaves a lot to be desired..especially uphill and vertical...looks like a waterfall haha. So I used this project as a bit of a practice to get my eye in with the Stick. I must admit my preferred method is TIG I just find it much more enjoyable. More expensive in time and consumables though as you rightly pointed out. Cheers. 👍👍
