Korobeiniki is a traditional Russian folk song that was famously adapted by Horokazu Tanaka for the addictive blockbusting arcade game, Tetris! While the tune has become most popular as the Tetris theme, the original folk song is about a young woman meeting a merchant and haggling over goods as a metaphor for courtship. It was based on a poem by Nikolay Nekrasov, with a peasant girl being courted by a peddler in a rye field. After offering her some of his goods in return for a kiss, and he pledges to marry her after finishing his next day in the market.

Altough this original version is much more layered an truly shines in it's simple complexity, they did a masterfull job with the interpretation for Tetris. Especially when you realize it was simpled down to be compatible for an 8bit soundcard, and then evolved as a piece of its own in the advancing years.

thisismyfirstusername i made this up The original story of the Russian song Korobeiniki is that a young merchant is courting his sweetheart, he gives her gifts and promises to marry her as soon as he earns enough money to pay for a wedding. They then part ways, the girl goes back to her family's home and dreams of the day they will get married, and promises to herself that she will be a loving wife to him. The merchant, meanwhile, meets up with a friend in the village, who is also a 'korobeinik'(term for merchants who would carry the goods they were selling in crates that they strapped to themselves) and they set off through the woods to the next town, to sell more goods. On the way, they meet a lumberjack, who offers to accompany them through the forest. However, about halfway through, the lumberjack realizes the crates the two friends are carrying are empty, meaning they've already sold everything, and proceeds to rob and kill them. A rather sad story, but it fit with Russian culture at the time
