The problem with the Crosshair chip arc is that when he has the chip he can't change or grow as a character. When he has it removed he can actually choose his own choices and have his own internal conflict. Otherwise all the bad batch would need to do is take him to Bracca and then he'd be good again which would be super boring.

Personally, I would’ve preferred if the whole bad batch was fighting for the empire against their will then eventually get the chips removed by Rex near the end of the season and realize everything that they have done under the empire’s control, then they could’ve wondered about what their purpose is now that the war is over, this would’ve been far more interesting than just doing the whole “fight against the empire” plot that we’ve gotten so many times by now

But here’s the problem, why does Crosshair want to stay with the empire? Prior to getting influenced by the chip, he seemed chill with staying with the bad batch but after getting forced against his will to join the empire, after being forced to fight against his brothers, after being forced to murder people, he just apparently is fine with staying with the empire which is highly unrealistic, they should have established something about Crosshair being tired of the republic and the bad batch prior to getting influenced by the chip to justify his decision to stay with the empire

'like most were' how do you know most were opposed to the empire? we only get the perspective of a small number of un-chipped clones post-empire declaration. considering they were raised with the idea of eventually being tools of the empire most would likely be ok with the empire it is after all the democratically elected successor to the republic.

@tristankawatsuma8962
@tristankawatsuma8962 2 жыл бұрын
Eh, I have to disagree. This explanation applies more so to Legends where the Jedi and Clones have some animosity due to the former not liking how obedient and unquestioning the clones were while the clones didn’t like the incompetence of the Jedi. And when it comes to teaching clones independent thinking and the culture of painting their armor, that is more due to the Mandalorians, Alpha-17, and Anakin Skywalker than the Jedi Order. While most Jedi didn’t disrespect the clones, they never earned their respect making it easy to execute Order 66 for the clones without the inhibitor chips. However with Canon things are different. Some Mandalorians like Fenn Rau and some Protectors and former Protectors were chosen along with bounty hunters, but Jango Fett kept a distance from the clones instead of training them personally like in Legends. Also, the Jedi actually try to establish connections with the clones instead of treating them as grunts. In Canon they are the ones who encourage the clone troopers to become more independent thinking. In some cases they become friends. There were still Jedi like Kota and Pong Krell who didn’t like clones or even hated them, but compared to Canon Jedi they looked like exceptions while with Legends Jedi they looked like extreme versions of regular Jedi. Timeline-wise, the reason for this probably would be because the transition of the Jedi from peacekeepers to servants of the Senate happens later. The Ruusaan Reformation happens in both timelines about 32 years apart, so little change there. But in Canon it isn’t until the High Republic Era, about 300 years before the Galactic Civil War that the Republic and Jedi get far closer thanks to the Nihil Conflict. This is when the Republic first expands into the Outer Rim. In Legends, this expansion happened far earlier, during the era of wars between the Republic, Sith, and Mandalorians. I suppose that would mean in Canon the Jedi and Republic were the underdogs far more than in Legends if they weren’t able to expand into the Outer Rim on a mass level. Anyways, this latter start of the Jedi intertwining with the Republic government possibly leads to more Jedi still believing in expressing empathy and emotions. They still held fast to their doctrine of controlling their emotions to the extreme like Legends Jedi, but Canon Jedi may have been a little looser with following these rules due to not spending as much time with these rules. Of course this is speculation and not fact, so I can be damn wrong. Anyways, the Jedi aren’t as strict compared to their Legends counterparts, so they forge relations with the clone troopers. Now every single one still is very loyal to the Republic when their inhibitor chip isn’t on. The thing is that Canon Jedi also taught the clone troopers a number of lessons while in Legends they usually ignored the clone troopers. We saw on Mandalore Ahsoka teaching students to question political leaders and tackle corruption in their government. We see Yoda tell clone troopers that even they have a connection to the Force like all other beings. So it’s likely they taught the clones a number of these lessons. While this might not have stopped all clones form carrying out Order 66 on their own, they likely would be hesitant enough for the Jedi to realize what was happening and fight back to escape. The Jedi who weren’t in combat were able to sense the deaths of their comrades and fought back, but this non-chip hesitation would have allowed Jedi in combat to survive as they were too busy fighting battle droids to realize their troops were about to gun them down. Hence why Jedi like Ahsoka, Cal Kestis, Caleb Dume, and Yoda were able to fight back and escape while Plo Koon, Ki Adi Mundi, and Aayka Secura were taken by surprise. Now of course the inhibitor chips likely wore off maybe a year after being activated and yet clone troopers still served the Empire. Most of them only left because the Empire forcefully retired them. Why did most clones not leave on their own after the inhibitor chips? Well, besides the possibility they never found out about the chips and what happened to Kamino, they may have seen the Empire as the only route for them. Perhaps if the Jedi Order was alive, many clones would defect and join them as they have plenty of reason to hate the Empire, like tossing them out and replacing them with normal soldiers with getting compensated or trained for the civilian sector. Same thing if the Rebel Alliance existed. Clone Troopers, even at their best, are followers however. Most are not leaders, those who defy simply because they want to. And after the Clone Wars, there was nobody who was a “leader” to the clones besides the Empire. No other galactic size force to side with. The Jedi were wiped out, the Rebel Alliance was only formed when most of them were old, and the Separatist Holdouts along with Rebel Cells in the first decade of the Empire kept getting crushed or they were too small to make a difference. Nobody significant at all besides the Empire. No “leader” besides the Imperials. Of course a minority of clones stuck with the Empire long after their brothers were retired due to genuine belief and possibly luck. They mostly became drill instructors with only a few staying on as soldiers. If the Jedi had more time with the clone troopers, they could have taught them to be rebellious in the face of tyranny. If the 501st had been taught this lesson, they would have stopped Krell before it was too late and more clones may have believed Fives and even help him expose the inhibitor chips. Overall, I believe your expectation doesn’t work as well in Canon. To put it in other words, it applies to most clones in Legends, but few clones in Canon. And it’s all thanks to how the Jedi act differently in a small way. If the Jedi had replicated their treatment of the clones to their relation with the general public, far fewer people may have believed hated the Jedi and supported the purge against them.

My biggest gripe with the bad batch is that it’s a repeat of the same formulaic starwars story we’ve been getting for the past couple of years; *an imperfect family roams the galaxy trying to find where they belong, running away and escaping bad guys, and protecting a character of vague importance.* I get that starwars is all about family but the family in **this show** are all supposed to be soldiers, artificially created unstable elite soldiers no less. I was really hoping for a *Band of Brothers* kind of narrative or something akin to the infamous “*501st Journal*” where it would talk about their lives and integral missions that either furthered the overall story of starwars or caused them to undergo actual character development. They’re commandos, I’m sure they’ve seen their fare share of shit while serving the GAR. Maybe we could’ve even seen them serve under the empire before they realized the horrible truth.

I disagree with you on some points but respect your perspective. For one I really like crosshair’s arc, albeit you’re right some parts don’t make sense. But he is trying to find a meaning to his existence and he decide to latch on to the Empire, despite the fact that the Empire doesn’t care about clones, regs or not. Often times in real life we see people who stick around in abusive relationships because it fulfills some part of what that person is lacking in such a compelling manner that they’re willing to ignore some glaring red flags. I think Crosshair’s character perfectly illustrates this. That said, I agree that the writers failed to capitalize on a huge treasure trove of opportunities in the other members of the Bad Batch. They don’t have to develop every single person this season, but at least have Echo reflect more about what is going on, and on some of the events that transpired while he was enslaved by the Techno Union. This is a character who was there from the very beginning, and has outlived many of the other established characters! Instead, he acts as if he is a new character with no connection to the clone wars. And his tech oriented powers is kinda redundant with Tech.

Yes cannot agree more that this would have benefitted from being released all at once. My favorite episodes were the once explaining the empire… warmantle (dub) the like 5 filler episodes were fine with didn’t need them but I don’t hate them. I love the Hera arc. Those two episodes and the one before were great because it showed the empire on a republic world and a separatist and just how the empire ruled. And then… the destruction of kamino. I loved it. Also I don’t think cross hair actually has his chip removed. He had head ache in the last episodes and honestly I just think his chip was amplified so much he believes it’s not there. Also as we all know these animations get better with each season. Season 1 of rebels and clone wars were meh but the last seasons of each were amazing

My biggest problem with the show is omega. Let’s take a child to a war zone. This is becoming a common theme in Disney Star Wars. I didn’t understand why the empire destroyed its cloning facility on kamino. The empire had cleaned out the facility. So they just blew up some empty building for dramatic effect. This is also a good example filoni bending the rules for his story. In ashoka one star destroyer at close range can’t kill a group of people on the ground. In bad batch 3 Venentor destroyers wipe out a city in seconds.

Maybe it's just me but personally find Crosshairs more intersting after learning that he already removed his inhibitor chip and it makes me want to see more of him. Almost every character we know that ditched the Empire do it because they're evil and doing wrong (and they're right, I'm not gonna argue) but we almost never see the pov from the "good" guys who chose to stay with the Empire. Crosshairs stayed not for the sake of following orders but because he wants to be on the winning side so I can't wait to see more of his journey. Hope it's something like Thrawn's story where he follows the bad guys while having good intentions. Hell, I'd watch a whole movie starring Yularen's perspective.

This is pretty much exactly how I felt. I decided to watch it every morning with my breakfast. After about episode six, I started questioning wether it was worth my time to keep watching at all. The show wasn’t bad, it was just predictable and kind of boring. And their incompetence really started to get to me. If they had always been this incompetent, there would be no way their group would’ve survived this long. And Omega. May be a Disney thing, but we really have to have some sort of child in every new show huh. You already know they’re not gonna kill her off or get rid of her in any way any time soon, so everything involving her becomes trivial and feels less serious.

Sadly Fennec being portrayed as uber competent is likely intentional on Disney's part. We've already seen they are obsessed with making female characters look as competent as possible and the fact she's played by a Chinese actress, who Disney has made no secret they want to suck up to as much as possible, it's a two for one deal.

One of the weakest traits of newer SW material is the major inconsistency with the power levels of characters. This has been an issue even since The Clone wars and has seemed to have gotten worse in Rebels, the Mandalorian and the newer shows. In some situations we can’t even blame plot armor anymore. These random Joe blow Mary Sue characters will come out of nowhere and take on some of the most battle hardened characters in Star Wars like it’s nothing. Cad Bane who has taken on elite Jedi loses to Fennec Shand. Hunter who is a genetically modified freak of nature who we’ve seen destroy platoons of droids with barely any effort gets beat up by Fennec Shand. Ahsoka Tano the master who has gone Toe to Toe with Vader, Maul and Greivous struggles against some old lady with a spear. Koska Reeves who is Half the size of Boba Fett and less experienced than him holds her own against him. It makes me wonder if the writers actually think these kind of things through or if they just go “In this scene, this guy is gonna fight this guy!, make it look cool and stuff”.

The most interesting thing about this show was the conflict between Crosshair and his former brothers. I also disagree with your take on the cameos. It is forced fanservice. The fact of the matter is, there’s different ways they can advance each story and interconnect it without having the characters constantly meeting each other, other shows have done it (like The Expanse). The idea of Star Wars being this big galaxy loses its meaning when you put all these characters in the same room and they can all point to each other as to when and how they’ve met. Bad Batch meets Caleb Dume, whom Hunter helps, and then they also meet Hera Syndulla too? Also, does Fennec Shand and Cad Bane have to be there? Are there no other bounty hunters in the galaxy? Can we get some Haxion Brood bounty hunters? And Saw Gerrera too. Come on! It’s the same side characters getting recycled over and over again. I can buy the Hera Syndulla thing, but the fact that they meet 2 main characters from Rebels is just a little too fanservicey. Disney shouldn’t have to rely on cameos and whole episodes on other characters just to sustain your interest in their new show. It’s same thing they did with BOBF.

I didn't even make it halfway through Season 1. The individual members of the Bad Batch are cartooney, exaggerated, cliched archetypes, and I found the copy-pasted clones to be far more interesting. Also, like Clone Wars, Bad Batch is a grind to watch due to loads of boring filler. I think I stopped watching after the episode with the young rancor because it was a snoozefest. Same reason I stopped watching The Mandalorian after travel biscuits. And finally, for a show that takes place during the rise of the Empire, I was expecting a lot of tension, but what little tension I felt totally dissipated after the first episode or two. The Clone Wars 4-part finale was an absolute nail biter all the way through, though it is inherently more intense when it follows longtime fan favorite characters as opposed to a bunch of new ones. Regardless, Bad Batch had an opportunity to show us all the suspense and dread of defected clones evading the newly formed Empire, and for me it failed to do that.

There are a couple points I disagree with here, but overall Bad Batch was pretty disappointing for me as well. I think that the transition away from episodic storytelling in Star Wars has been pretty harmful overall. A big pitfall of cerealized storytelling in Star Wars is that the Mandalorian and the Bad Batch all have one long, continuous story which means that the stories can't shake off their bad ideas quite so easily. Clone Wars and Rebels had their bad episodes or and bad arcs, but that was okay because worst-case scenario they could just dust themselves off and come back next week. Remember that immediately after Clone Wars' arc of droids bumbling around the desert, arguably one of the most boring parts of the series, comes Maul's conquest of Mandalore.

To be fair, there was only one technical filler episode, which was infested. I love hearing other opinions on Star Wars even if I don’t like them. But look at clone wars season 1. Yeah there was rookies and Ryloth, but it was an overall 5/10. I’m gonna get a lotta flack for this, Bad batch did more in there first season than clone wars did. I liked the finale (but have mixed feelings about omega going after AZ) but just take a very small look at where they left us: Crosshair is still imperial but we know that he’s not a jerk and will be conflicted through season 2. And Nala Se is on palpatines cloning facility which MAYBE will lead to hunting omega (again) but more importantly will lead into the mandalorian. You like it when character timelines line up together, right? Well, there you go

I've been binging on this show and am halfway through season 3 so far. Fortunately, season 2 and 3 were big improvements and begun to actually make it feel meaningful and fit into something bigger in the star wars universe such as Sidious' plans. Glad I wasn't the only one annoyed by Crossfire's inhibitor chip. I saw that as a glaring continuity error. It is as if they decided to do something different with his character after already writing in that the empire boosted his chip. They even made a note to explain that his inhibitor chip was working better than the others, but still not entirely, which explained his behavior with the squad about it initially.

But the characters really dont care about each other. The biggest one being that they dont seem to care about saving Crosshair. His forced defection, especially after they learn about the chips, should be almost a constant source of conflict within the group. Maybe have Echo and Wrecker be the ones who want to create plans to bring him back whereas Hunter and Tech say it's too dangerous and say they have to protect Omega. But theres nothing. Even Hunter seems mildly displeased they left Crosshair behind rather than genuinely conflicted. Plus, theres barely any banter. Compare this to Republic Commando or even Wrecker and Crosshairs competition in Season 7 and it becomes very obvious. And heres a question that we should know by now because we've had a whole season with these characters: if Hunter was to die, who would take command?

I am really of the opinion Crosshair's arc needed to happen. The introduction of the inhibitor chips in the Clone Wars removed a big portion of what made order 66 so meaningful and poignant. Military forces are central to the maintenance of an autocratic regime. To me it was obvious that the clones would choose Palpatine's new order over any loyalty to the Jedi Order, not because they were mind controlled, but because they were a militaristic force bred to restore security and ensure the continuity of the regime they served. That means you could tell a much more compelling story when you realised the army, shown to be gallant and heroic, is just like any other military force in history can be, an institution of oppression and an instrument of political violence.

I agree with all your points except Crosshair. In my opinion, Crosshair having his chip removed but still choosing to serve the Empire adds more to the story than takes away. For one, while I agree that the time frame and causality of Crosshair getting it removed should of been better explained, it does not change that the story is now made more complex and compelling because of it. As you admitted, clones being forced to carry out atrocities against their will has already been done, and it would do the story no favors to just make it another "Clone Victim" story. Because simply put, it would make the conflict with Crosshair too easy. I'll be fair, much of this does come from my bias against the Inhibitor Chip concept and preferring how Clones and Order 66 were handled in the old EU. That being said, let's just say that the story did what you suggested, Crosshair would just be a mindless Zombie until the Bad Batch in some Finale capture him, remove his chip, and then boom. They are back to being buddies. It would be too easy and it would not make the conflict nor redemption feel earned. But now with his chip gone, it adds ramifications to his actions and choices, because they are his choices. As such there is no magic surgery that can solve the problem, this is no "It's not his fault." Crosshair legit believes what the Empire stands for, and when you actually think about it in the context of the old clone lore, why wouldn't they? They were bred their entire life to be loyal to a system and cause, to defend and serve its will even at the expense of their own lives. The clones were taught this since birth and not every clone is going to get the kind of individuality discovery that men in the 501st and 212th. As such, serving the Empire was just doing the same thing as serving the Republic. The theme runs with how to adjust to change, do you adapt and build a new life? Do you fight for what you had before? Or do you cling to what you have left? Crosshair is choosing the third option because he legit believes that without the Empire, his life would have no purpose or meaning, that combined with the fact that when he was Brainwashed, his squad in his eyes abandoned and betrayed him. Now the fact he was left to die in the end of the first season and the Empire carrying its acts even further, especially once clones start getting phased out will likely start getting to Crosshair and allow him to develop to either a slow redemption, or perhaps someone worse. And the fact that clones like Howzer show the effects of the chips are not permanent, shows that now all clones are not going to have to make that choice to some capacity.

I don't understand why Crosshair choosing evil makes him uninteresting or entirely sympathetic. Isn't it interesting to have the perspective of a person who genuinely thinks the Empire is the right faction to join for their own reasons? Almost every proper Imperial character we get is either cartoonishly evil (not that that is a bad thing with the role of such characters in their stories) or defects to the good guys, so why can't we have someone who chooses evil and stays with evil because they perceive themselves as right?

Definitely do not agree about crosshair point. With the chip still intact it is predictable about what he may be feeling, his Choice is not his own. Certainly tragic, but that doesn’t compare to the emotional toll that having the chip removed and still serving the empire hunting his brothers WILLINGLY. This can really be taken in a lot of ways with him possibly finding his way back to the group and choosing his humanity over his soldier-related ambitions, or the exact opposite and embracing the empire and making the crew make a choice to put him down or something like that which adds far more depth than just it wasn’t his fault. This makes it HIS fault, HIS decision which holds different weight. Just a thought!
