I remember back in the early 50’s Attercliffe Road Station was kept immaculate by the station staff that worked there, mostly Women, with flower beds, white lines and polished brass everywhere and I believe it won a few awards at the time .

It's great to hear about the pride that was taken in the stations. It's hard to comprehend now isn't it, given what Attercliffe Road is like now.

I'm 39 and I remember getting the train from Midland station to Meadowhall a few times and it stopped at 'Brightside & Carbrook' then set off and stopped at Meadowhall within a minute

Great video as usual Paul. I worked in Barnsley in the mid-1990s & quite often caught the train. I remember it stopping at Attercliffe Riad sometimes & Brightside not so often.

For some reason I seem to remember a bus replacement from Rotherham Central to Sheffield one Saturday morning in the 90s that made it's way round these stations.

It' nearly forty years since I travelled the Sheffield to Doncaster line, but with you kindly showing this video, I never realised that Attercliffe Road and Brightside stations had closed since. Amazing to see the platform layouts and approaches still there. A good presentation, and thank you.

Did a lot of trainspotting, so went on both stations at one time. They were both pay train stations, which meant you had to pay on the train. The driver also had to remember to stop at these stations, which they didn't always do! Brightside station had the extra two lines on either side for goods trains, so they could pass through. Judging by the rust on the remaining line, it's vary rarely used. Always remember the lines whistling long before the train arrived on both stations.

Nice one Graham. Some of those narrow platforms at Attercliffe Rd must have given a closeup feel to the passing trains.
@grahamappleyard6190 Жыл бұрын
@@WobblyRunner Yes on the far platform going out form Sheffield the trains were getting up to the 70 mph speed, set for the line, which starts at the first tunnel out of Sheffield Station. When a class 45 (139 tons) and ten coaches sped through you knew it.

Interesting video Paul. Like you 95 seems like yesterday to me . I remember catching trains from donny to Sheffield when going to work jobs from Tinsley if they were an all stations unit used to take forever

I know what you mean 😄. However I sometimes have to catch train to donny and if its the stopper, it seems to take forever still

Hi paul interesting and informative video about the lost railway stations in Attercliffe and brightside when I was younger in the 60’s and 70’s I lived down Attercliffe and remember all the locations very well the news the other day about the cancelled HS2 when the government said said they would reopen the don valley line from stocksbridge to Sheffield that’s old Victoria station I think l drove past it this morning and saw a big truck doing something maybe it’s a coincidence hopefully not let’s hope it’s the start of better things to come look forward to your next video Kev Beighton Parkway Sheffield

Will be an exciting time if/when stuff starts to develop. The pesimist in me is currently winning the battle of hope 😁. So much wasted infrastructure around Sheffield isnt there.
@glyndurrans9455 Жыл бұрын
I remember Attercliffe Rd and Brightside stations in the 70's. Attercliffe comprised of wooden buildings on each platform and Brightside was originally similar but was destroyed by bombing in the second world war and was rebuilt with flat-roofed brick buildings.
@WobblyRunner Жыл бұрын
👍 Nice one. I assume those shelters still standing at Brightside are those replacement ones?
@glyndurrans945511 ай бұрын
No unfortunately not. The ones I remember were longer single storey 50s/60s style buildings, brick built with flat concrete roofs. Love your walks, I did a lot of these in the early 80s, you should do more round Wath, particularly the big accident at Manvers.@@WobblyRunner

Good stuff lads 👍 By 95 super tram was in full swing wonder if that had anything to do with the closing on the stations?

Never thought of that. You could be right, it probably was a factor

Why are abandoned stations so fascinating, when those still in use are dull as ditch water?

@@WobblyRunner Well you visited the former Brightside station nr. Meadowhall and that wasn't much different from a bus stop. Still more interesting dead than it was alive. At some age nostalgia takes over and it seems you and me are past that age.
@jasinere35 Жыл бұрын
brightside was closed when meadowhall interchange was opened there was no point in having 2 stations close to each other paul there was another station that use to be opposite the canal where the canal goes under the active line short of darnall road
@WobblyRunner Жыл бұрын
Not true. There was 5 year gap between one opening and the other closing.

@@WobblyRunnerthats only what i heard from a couple of locals as for the other station you can view the location from street view & you can clearly see where the subway went however im not sure where the entrance for this one wwas im under the impression the tram bridge is on where it was but you may need to look into it
@WobblyRunner Жыл бұрын
@jasinere35 yeah very close together. It almost certainly was a factor in it eventually closing down those years later
@paulairey742 Жыл бұрын
In the latter years, there were very few trains a day that stopped at Attercliffe and Brightside. Probably a legal obligation before they were finally allowed to close them?
@jasinere35 Жыл бұрын
@@paulairey742 there is the other rail transport that stops at bright side & has a direct route to city centre & thats supertram so i wonder if this was partly to do with the demise as it follows the same route along the canal & it has a few more stops along the way
