Just found this video by chance. I went to Uni in Sheffield in 1973 and stayed in Sheffield and Peak District until 1998. I used to live just down the road from the Nottingham House (opposite the dental hospital), which was a great pub in those days. Others I can remember are the Pomona, on Eccleshall Rd just down from the now-demolished Wards Brewery. The Red Deer, near the university and the Broomhall Tavern. Some pubs in the North of the city stayed open almost all night to serve the miners coming off shift. A friend of mine, who was a keen climber had some of his ashes left in one of the ash trays of the Broadfield and the rest scattered on Stanage Edge.
@patrickdickinson64924 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, yes remember all these pubs from similar era, went in the North in the 1970,s and the Tavern around the 1990,s both popular with students as they are today. Old Pomona went along time ago, but Red Deer very much the same, looking forward to them all opening up again, all the best Pat

Hi Pat, Brilliant video this, one of my favourites in fact, as it’s great to see some of your classic Sheffield pubs, especially in a time when we can no longer take such things for granted in a way none of us would ever have imagined. Great feature about the bomber and its incredibly brave crew. For my 10 pennies worth, imagine if it had limped home from Holland and needed to force land in the park then it would have either been a case of fuel starvation possibly through battle damaged tanks or even in fact weather issues or potentially multi engine failure but either way it resulted in a decision to force land in the Sheffield park. Sounds like they were lined up to force land on open ground and on the last minute saw the children playing. Had they continued the approach they would have clearly known that the children would have never survived impact. Both pilots would have known that the one option to save the children playing would have been to pull back on the stick to use the last remaining bit of lift to bring the aircraft back into the air, but that would have put it dangerously near to the stall speed where the wings lose their ability to provide lift. Not a problem at 2000 feet but in such close proximity to the ground there is no chance of recovery and the aircraft may have fallen with little control to the ground with high impact. Brave men indeed.
@patrickdickinson64924 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, you certainly have some great knowledge of this fated flight, at least these brave men won,t be forgotten. Great that we still have the old pubs and long may they survive, all the best Pat
@paulb72004 жыл бұрын
Hi Pat, thanks for your reply, I had heard of this flight before but honestly can’t remember whether it was first from hearing about it when I first viewed your pub crawl video or through watching the feature on it BBC breakfast ran on it a year or so back, but that said your videos are far more interesting and enjoyable to watch than anything the BBC produces! Thanks re the compliment re my knowledge of the flight however it is very much undeserved. I was just trying to imagine what may have happened to the aircraft based on all the information you gave in the feature which I found very interesting. As you know there is a lot of high ground around Sheffield and additionally dependant on the cloud base/ceiling at the time together with the aircrafts “limping” condition with potential failed engines it would have had significantly reduced performance, evident by the decision to force land in a field of course! Landing is a critical phase of flight and one of the potential dangers is you are fairly close to the stall speed so that is monitored very carefully on approach and there are safety margins built in to protect against things such as wind shear or gusts / sudden drops in a constant wind but under normal circumstances you would have the performance available to “go around” or abort the landing if the approach wasn’t stable or there was an incursion on the runway. Tragically it sounds like this brave crew, possibly due to the engine damage wouldn’t have had the performance to climb away and I’m sure they would have been well aware of this when they took the decision to try and pull up to avoid the children. Had they not tried to do this the children would have clearly been killed but the crew would have quite likely survived the forced landing which is testament to the bravery of these crews. Yes definitely hope a lot of these old pubs survive. We lose a lot of our history when they get turned into houses or supermarkets. Thanks Pat and all the best, Paul

Danielle Britton Hi Danielle, I had known these pubs for years but when I decided to make the video I researched them just to get a bit of info and history on the pubs and area, that got me interested in the River Porter as they are all near, then the culverts on the river Porter which led me to Megatron. So one days drinking led to most of my exploring videos, strange how it all works out, thanks for messaging, Pat

The Rising Sun brings back memories. My first drinking pub was The Stag psalter lane, when I was 14 my mate 18, we drove. We also went to the Nursery Tavern. Plus all the Derbyshire ones Bless ya for this pub crawl ❤️❤️❤️

Hi Michael, yes still call at, The Sun occasionally, and the Stag on Psalter Lane. The Nursery now a lot bigger pub I'd the haunt of Sheffield student population, both my son,s go there, hence I don,t Ecclesall Road has many pubs and restaurants now, there are several micro pubs, basically shops converted to pubs, Banner Cross, Porter Cottage, and Lescar, all still there and doing well, all the best Pat

Eyam, Foolow, Wardlow Mires, Litton and Tideswell is a good White Peak crawl with lots of tracks and footpaths interlinking the pubs and villages. You could also throw in Great Hucklow, Calver, Stoney Middleton and Curbar if you are suitably disposed. This potentially takes in 12 pubs, not all of which I would recommend at this moment in time, but there are others here which are a must. I still lament the passing of Ye Olde Bull's Head in Little Hucklow which would've fitted very nicely into this itinerary. I never got to visit - it closed in 2005 after a painful decline and was derelict when I last saw it. The cellar is said to give access to an old lead mine and there are some who placed the pub in the Top 10 oldest hostelries in the country. Anyway, thanks for your videos Patrick and your boyish sense of fun which shines through, something that too many of us have lost.
@patrickdickinson64926 жыл бұрын
Hi and nice to hear from you, those places I will of visited the pubs at sometime. Wardlow Mires, is that the Three Stags Head, now that was a experience. Alot of the said pubs now seem to deal with food which I understand, they have to make money,but when the diners have gone the pubs have a couple of people in. Often round Castleton and Hope and Hassasage as good tail and bus links, can,t beat a Derbyshire Pub for a nice meal and drink, all the best Pat

Hi sandy and thanks for recommendation to your You Tube Friends much appreciated. Back home know but had nice time Oxford. Main reason was to visit Bletchley Park great day out, in fact so much to see visited on way home to see what we had not covered. Amazing people who did not get the recognition of what they had done in WW2. Visited a few pubs in Oxford, The Bear Inn, Chequers, Turf Tavern, The Grapes, White Horse and a couple more which I can,t remember, me and my wife had a good day out, last time I visited Oxford we had 2 children with us so that was a different type of day, tea shops and sight seeing. Thanks Pat
