That wasn’t a good performance from Wrexham, it could easily have been a lot more for the Blades and in reality that was as weak a team as we could field for the game. Boyes, Peck, Marsh, Seriki etc. were all on loan at League One or League Two clubs last year, Coulibaly was out on loan in Sweden, Hampson was making his full debut, Oné is an U21 player, Grbic will be third choice once Cooper signs tomorrow; Souttar, Trusty and Brewster are a level above League One standard, so they were a challenge for your side to cope with. Slimane is largely an unknown quantity still who won’t start many games. It was a game that Wrexham should have been able to get a foothold in thanks to physicality, experience etc. but they weren’t able to find a way to be competitive in the game. For you to lose as convincingly as you did was genuinely surprising. As a Sheffield United fan, it was great to see our youngsters get minutes and play well, but if Wrexham want to be a top end League One side (or go further than that), they may need to keep spending to get there. Their current squad doesn’t have the depth needed in terms of real quality.

@@marko9463 yes but one which was very poor and got dominated by youth players. That was a Sheffield United team with 5 academy graduates in the starting line-up, with a combined total of under 10 competitive appearances for the club. Take Brewster and Trusty out of the 11 (neither of which are starters for the club) and there’s a combined total of around 50 or fewer appearances for the club across 9 of the players involved. Even off the bench 2 of the substitutions were academy graduates and 1 has barely kicked a ball in competitive football. I think there needs to be a realisation in terms of the quality difference and the levels which are the reality of the pyramid once you go beyond the lower end of League One. That was a game which could have been in the EFL Trophy and framed as Sheffield United U-21s vs Wrexham.

The Blades played very well tonight, Peck, Hamson, Marsh, showed some courage and pace with abit of power. Scouter also played with creative and strong intensity at the back. Nice to see Ryan One come on with plenty sensible creative thinking so well done to One, keep it up Blades all best 😊

Garbage support again in a cup competition but credit to the less than 10k true blades fans like myself who turned up. Souttar was terrific and some of the young lads did really well. Coulibaly still hasn't improved one bit from two seasons ago. No awareness of what's around him, poor passer and physically weak. How he stayed on the pitch is a mystery. Giving a goal out of sympathy to the biggest waste of money in club history Brewster was an embarrassment. What all the management see in him is beyond me.
