I bought a jade somewhere around 1998. It grew into a monster, my dad wanted his own jade so I gave him a branch. Eventually the original plant died off (lack of light, bad parenting.) My dad's branch generated several more plants, a couple he gave to my brother. The plants my dad had died, but the ones he gave my brother thrived and turned into monsters like their parent plant. When my brother moved he had us come over and dig up plants we wanted before he sold the house, and he asked if I wanted the jades in the livin groom. Not turning that down, and now in 2023 I have a forest of jades that came from the original plant I bought 25 years ago!😊😊😊

My only problem with jade plants is.. I've got too many of them! 🤭 I can never bring myself to throw out broken branches and tend to stick them in other pots or in the ground.. and they grow everywhere and in any soil!! The mother plant is enormous now.. about 5 feet tall with a trunk I can't even get both hands around.. it flowers every December without fail.. a sight to behold.. just wish I could toughen up a bit when it comes to broken stems!! 😆💚 Great vid! Thanks, Mr Sheffield..

Do you water in winter. I was told not to if I wanted it to bloom; it never has flowered. But the plant is big and strong with dark glossy leaves.
@pimpozza
@pimpozza 9 ай бұрын
@@lgparker4726 Depending on where you live, Jade plants do much better outdoors.. It's so difficult (I have never yet seen it) to get them to bloom indoors as they need a good 8+ hours of sunshine and bright light, followed by a cool, dry period.. they don't exactly go into dormancy but definitely need those conditions.. Usually a house will be heated in winter and that definitely means no blooms! I used to bring my mother plant inside when it was smaller, into a bright *unheated* room, no water from end Oct/early Nov until early March. Now it's so enormous it's stayed outside for the past 5 years and I simply cover the pot and around the trunk to stop it from getting wet! It started blooming mid December and has just finished.. 💚 Jade plants often won't flower until they're very mature, even in the wild.. 4 or 5 years old and at least 20" tall. I don't know if it's a fact, but I find plants with the red edging on their leaves indicate they're getting just the right amount of light to bloom.. never had a perfectly green plant make even a bud! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Fascinating stuff though!

Yay! You DID do a video about jades! I became foster plant mom to many of my daughter's plants. In addition to my already existing plants, I now have over 200 plants, and all of these I have cuttings waiting to grow roots and be their own plants and so forth. She had 4 jades and I have been driving myself nuts with the watering! I thought succulent... don't water! They store water in their leaves, so I would only mist when it seemed extremely dry, but then I'd think "well, a little water can't hurt it" and then it'd get soggy leaves, and I would panic thinking I over watered and I would go back and forth not knowing what to do! These jades are only part of her succulent collection, plus I had a few of my own too. It's good to know I can water anything with treated water, but only when the soil is dry, and from watching some of your other videos in addition to this one, I have an idea of how to propegate the Jade now too. Although I'll be re- watching those again before I try that myself. That's kinda scary to make that first cut. 😬 Anyway, the one thing I still need to learn well is how to fertilize what... and when... and who and who not and what...oh my. Thank you for your videos! They are helping tremendously and I love all your jokes.... it's a fun way to learn about plants. 😂

I have made the exact same mistake of underwatering my jade plant and the leaves started to become soft and mooshy. Which made me think that I overwatered and I waited even longer. Then some of the stems started to fall off. I dug out the roots and didn’t spot any rot so that’s when I realised I have been depriving my plant of water. So now I always water when the soil has completely dried out, and it’s never been happier!

I have a monster jade that my dad planted many years ago. The house is now mine and the jade is still a monster. It gets plenty of water from the air conditioner drain in the summer. It is on the east side of the house. I have recently started a stem cutting for a house plant. After watching your video, I got a monster meter like you suggested. Yep, they definitely seem to do well with frequent watering. My Gollum was looking stressed & dehydrated with its once a week watering so I started watering it every 2-3 days during our summers here in a Perth. 🇦🇺I also noticed during heavy rain stretches in winter time it wouldn’t look soggy and ready to burst like many of my other more sensitive succulents did. I never had to coddle it and put it out of the rain. I should also mention I have always grown it & repotted it up in terracotta pots so it never gets drowned because of how the water evaporates away better in terracotta.

Great tips. It actually is even simpler than using a gadget. Just give a jade leaf a gentle squeeze. Firm? Plenty of water in there. Starting to soften, AND the soil doesn't look moist, it's getting thirsty, give a good drink, and then check firmness a couple of hours later to see the change. Check the firmness of the leaves next day to get a sense of what it feels like when full of water.

Also, am I the only weirdo that apologizes to my plants when I cut them? I talk to them too 😂 tell them how beautiful they are and how much I love them. I do this because of the studies I’ve read that prove plants flourish under positive energy- which comes from their atmospheres, and yes taking nice to them is very beneficial to their growth. So if you’re in a toxic relationship, your plants feel that pain too and that’s why they’re not growing so well and vice versa 😂 no joke. I’m deadass about all of this, check it out for yourself!

I LOVE getting up to a new Sheffield video! This one was interesting. I ordered a tricolor jade a while back and when it arrived, it wasn't what I expected. I realized that it was NOT a tricolor jade. The only pink on it was at the very tip of some leaves (I'm assuming it was the anthocyanin). I'm happy with my verigated jade though, I do love the white and green swirl patterns. Thanks for another interesting video! Also, if anyone is trying to learn when their jade needs water and you don't have a moisture meter (you SHOULD get one though), pinch your leaves. There should be very little give. If the begin getting soft, even slightly, it's time to water.

I've had it about a year now under bright grow lights and it has the old set of leaves, which are white and green, as well as two new sets that are white, red, and green. I suspect you have a Tricolor jade that didn't get enough light to bring out the third color, but is the correct species.

@lindsey4178 interesting that you mostly have swirls rather than stripes on your leaves! It's cool how each plant is a little different. Mine has some swirls and some stripes. I purchased one which did not work at all, remained in the dry zone despite thoroughly watering. Returned it and purchased another one. Similar thing but not quite as bad, sometimes reads dry a lot so not sure now whether to really believe it. My parlour palm felt damp with my finger but bone dry with the meter. @@QueenGail I'm in Zagreb, a capital of Croatia, so we have a standard continental climate conditions. But I must say that it is very important to keep a jade plant in the winter by the window and not on a temperature that exceeds 12 degrees of Celsius. I'm keepeing mine on the stairs by the small north Windows at 10 degrees only. It's always a problem for growers that they can't brag about the beauty of such plants in front of their friends and relatives, but that's why we have cameras. Love for the well-being of our plants should always surpass our vanity! It's the same with the Christmas cactus, it will go crazy with flowers in a cold place! If we move it to a warm room, all its flowers will fall within a few days. That cactus didn't give itself the name Christmas, we invented that ourselves, it's not his fault.

I notice that there is a lot of misinformation on the Internet that only confuses people and leads them astray. Sometimes in the videos it shows you top watering and other times you bottom watering. Is there a reason why you do one rather than the other. Maybe I have missed the video explaining this. I love that you have taken the complicated part about when to water and made it easy to determine this. By the way my 6 year old granddaughter thinks you are so funny. 😀🇨🇦

We had a huge jade plant when we lived in sunny hot S California until we had a rare hard freeze. Since it had spent its life out on the front porch it wasn’t possible to protect it. It was a horrifying so I quickly salvaged any viable stems and created a new plant from the original. They prefer sunnier dryer climates.

I just got an oger ear (which is a type of jade plant). I found it in those cheap succulents at Walmart. I dont think they ever watered it. Thats the first thing i did when i got it home before i even put it into its little terrarium (its currently tiny lol) it has a few leaves that seem like theyre struggling but as a whole i think its ok.

Jade plants are very resilient. I moved from Southern California to Northern California which is wetter and has lower temperatures in winter. I brought my jade curly jade and gollum jades along and all are in large containers in cactus soil since the soil here is clay. They sit on a rock border under eaves of house 🏡 and surprisingly they have all adapted well to the climate change. They’re approximately 2 feet tall with trunks about 9 inches diameter and receive water during hot summer months and none during winter. I’m bragging 😅but my point is they are very hardy and resilient plants 🪴. If I was only this successful with all my plants I’d be in plant heaven 😊Love your videos Richard I so enjoy them.

I Live in Maryland usa. May 1st i put it outside direct sun all day. I water it almost everyday. the leaves plump up, tips turn purple and it grows like crazy. BUT....come Oct plants come in placed in southern facing window and don't get water again till Tax day (April 15th) It lives off the water in the leaves, and trunk. I have killed a Beautiful huge Jade by overwatering it in the winter....no moister meter back then.

I think I might put my Jades back into soil. I transferred them into succulent mix when I got them which is pretty much mostly gravel. Maybe I should repot them (they're small but healthy) and add more compost to the succulent mix....

Either will work really. They'll be nutrients in the soil though

If you fertilize regularly it shouldn't matter. The biggest advantage I know of growing Jade in rich soil is that it can extract nutrients from it, but if you're fertilizing a nutrient deficient soil it should be the same

I got one one of the new mini sansi clip on grow lights on my Jade. I also removed some 20 leaves since it's actively growing and was crowding itself. Ive only had these 3 wee tiny lights for about 9 days so all i can really say is my Maranta seems very pleased as does my string of bananas and tradescantia, the foot candles were around 1500 so i put one on my Jade. So far so good and despite having three very different leave types, paper thin, succulent and slightly thicker leaves I've got no burning on any of them. I also love that i can set them to be on for 12 hours and they come back on at the same time each day so I'm not having to turn them on. Sansi should sponsor me at this point since nearly every lightbulb in my house is Sansi 🤣 but for real, i get extremely bad migraines (the whole am i possessed types) and the Sansi bulbs and grow lights do not trigger them! That's a miracle in itself and makes the bulbs worth every penny (esp when i get a discount!)

In China, where feng shui originated, jade plants are believed to bring good luck and fortune to the home or business it is in. You probably encounter Chinese homes/businesses primarily when you get Chinese take out which is why you associate them with that
