Your suggestion of a water meter has made a 100% difference with caring for my plants. I never water now without sticking it in the soil in various areas to see if it needs water. There have been times when looking at the top of the soil I think, this plant needs water only to see it doesn't at all.

I wholehearted agree with the plastic pots tip. I too have an -unhealthy- healthy obsession with all things plants, but also, I'm an _aesthetics maniac_ . I *always* used put my plants straight into a nice ceramic/stone/clay pot straight out of the nursey pots. It's something I wish I'd not ever gotten into the habit of doing. Roll on some years and I've slowly been repotting those older plants into nursery pots and always keeping the new plants left in them, and It's made a huge difference in the overall health of the plants! I do still have a few that are directly potted, simply because of their awkward shape - I'm talking about the rounded ceramics that barely give enough room for a small sized nursey pot - so much wasted room. I take special care with these guys though when watering, and they seem to be doing alright.. but it's still not ideal.
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants Жыл бұрын
I’ve got a few dotted around too. Much safer to have them in plastic pots
@MOSSBERG1740
@MOSSBERG1740 Жыл бұрын
I can totally relate to the type of round:ish shaped ceramic pots that are near impossible to put a fitting nursery pot inside of. I've got two beautiful large pots, with huge ZZ-plants inside, and the watering of those is a total guessing game except from lifting them and estimating their weight. I'm sure there's some rotten roots hiding down there from being too generous with the watering sometimes, but overall they have actually thrived during their 4~ years in there & are almost constantly pushing out new growth. I'm eager to repot them next spring and take a look at what has actually been going on in the root-department during all these years of watering them very haphazardly.

A little tip with dechlorinating water without chemicals. If you can keep your water out for 24hrs the chlorine discapates. Even with aquarium treatments it should be left for a period of time to treat it. I learned this keeping aquariums. I think a good tip also from aquariums is giving water time to come up to room temperature. While it's warm it can stay outside and really warm up. 'Indoor' plants don't like it cold so water straight from the tap can cause shock and decline in many plants. I killed a couple of Ficus Bonsai by doing this. Now mine is flourishing. Something worth a try too is putting struggling plants in a clear plastic bag where they create their own super humid micro climate. I've helped a few plants find new strength by doing this and also bounce back strong from heavy defoliating. Keep up the great tips and videos and give these a try. I'm sure you'll find more success than this compared to soy sauce!

I wanted to let you know that what you said to remove chlorine, YES, you can simply let tap water sit out for a few days, and it will eventually vaporize into the air. However, Chloramines are what the majority of treatment plants use in the USA and other places because it is more efficacious than just chlorine. (You can ask for a water quality report from the local authority to see if they are using chloramine.) Chloramines are a more complex combination of ammonia and free chlorine, which means they aren’t capable of evaporating. Thank you for reminding me about covering with a plastic bag. I've done this on new young plants but I may try it on my older avacado plant that likes to drop leaves.
@manupbritain5232

@laurel7175 Absolutely right, chloramine and flourides that some countries add are much more difficult to remove. Not an issue for this channel though.

For my plants and my aquariums I keep dechlorinated water in 5L containers. This gets it to room temp and means it is always ready to go. Aquariums also make the best, IMHO, water propagation tanks. I have a 30cm cube with just half a dozen nano fish and some shrimp in it and it is amazing for cuttings. Thank you so much for your great videos

3:00 Hahaha My mother-in-law always said she had a Black Thumb. Imagine then, I once gave her a plant in a pot that had no drainage holes (yeah, I didn't respect that then. ) It was years before any plant was happy in it. Plant after plant died -but it's a BEAUTIFUL pot... Fast forward 25 years, a Christmas Cactus has since managed to happily reside in said pot. It always feels to me like my mother-in-law's black thumb legacy has been remedied, and justifies my wish to keep this pot in Mom R.'s memory. Long way to go, huh? 😅

Good advice! I started taking in plants after I painted my living/dining room during Covid and wanted to decorate when there was nothing to decorate with😂. Since then I've had some failures (all touted as no fail plants 😂) Right now I have 12 beauties. Your best advice being look the plant up online to see if you have the right place and patience for that plant! Last Spring I had had enough of my Pillea and my Areca Palm so I kicked them outside where MN Summer with the help of my husband left me with 2 beautiful plants I now had to bring back inside......wish them and me luck as we try again!

I follow quiet few plant YT channels. Obviously they educational ans I've learned a lot.... But this one is my MAIN and favourite channel to watch ❤️ thank you. I have a small request. As I am proud plant parent only less than a year... Ive made huge progress over the spring and summer with ur tips (water throughout above sink, water conditioner, light, read what the plant needs, Inspect them properly, repot my old soil quick with ur advice or propagation) 😍I've saved and grow successfully many species (from seeds, small stems and even sick plants saved from dead shelf from store 🤗). However.... And here is the fun part... Ive no idea how to prepare to winter in uk... Most of my plants grow on window sills, some still enjoying outdoor weather... But.. How not to kill them on cold narrow sill or lack of light or Humidity? Grow lights in a whole house (im not sure if i can manage to do for all), 🤷 my energy bill is high enough 😭 humidifier? Thank you for another awesome video :D I'm currently trying to get the guts up to chop the top off my Ficus lyrata - its about 4.5ft tall. I used to keep it outside in the summertime - it loved it. Loads of leaves. Then one weekend it was insanely windy. I found it three days later lying on the floor missing all but four leaves on the top. This was about seven years ago and it has only grown one new leaf since. I am sure binning it would improve my collections looks but for the moment it just sort of sits there until I grow a pair and get the secateurs.

@@SheffieldMadePlants It is definitely the way to go, I'm quite attached to this plant and don't want to kill it but seven years looking like a cotton bud just isn't a good look. I will give it a go tomorrow if my nerve doesn't fail me!

I had a Rubber Plant that was the same, it looked awful, long leggy stems with a few.leaves at the top. I steeled myself, chopped it all the way down to the soil, stuck the top few stems into water to propagate, put the pot outside intending on recycling the whole thing into the flowerbeds and forgot about it, within a few weeks I started to see new growth. Not only did I have to repot it into a bigger pot last year but the thing is as tall as me and looks amazing. I ended up sticking the propagated/rooted stems in with it but I make sure I put her outside at the first chance every spring. I just have to find a big enough spot to put her when she comes back in next month, she does not like being in the house at all. Good luck with your plant, sometimes doing the draatic thing can shock them back into even bigger and better. 😊

Strange that you have Snake Plants not doing well away from the window. I live in a row house like you, and it's in a narrow street so at the front and at the back there's my kitchen build-out and my neighbour's build-out taking a lot of light. So in the middle of the living room plants really struggle but Snake Plants thrive. I do go weeks and weeks without watering them, maybe that benefits them? One thing I really have to start doing is quarantine my cacti when I buy a new one. More than once I've lost a couple because I brought in spider mites. I always look for them before buying a new cactus but sometimes there aren't any visible signs of them yet when I buy a new cactus. Lately I've seen a lot of cacti in shops with spider mite webs.

Nice video! My small mango seedling is starting to die, especially after I watered it and after I used wet paper towel to wipe its leaves or leaf I should say, becase it dropped 3 out of 4 leaves. And it's wilting so much, even the stem started twisting and the top looks as if it's rotting and there weren't as many spider mites. So I checked the roots, annnnnd there were basically no roots left and it smelled bad. Only the main root was still alive from the inner layers.This soil also had really thrown me off with the moisture. I'm gonna go out and look for pesticides or fungcides or even hydrogen peroxide. I don't wanna lose my beloved mango
@Daniele63
@Daniele63 Жыл бұрын
Did you let the soil dry between waterings ? Otherwise roots will rot because of the anaerobic environment. If you want to use something, if you leave the plant in the pot, let the soil dry, then use hydrogen peroxide, one part 3% hydrogen peroxide and two parts water, and put it in a watering can or spray bottle. You can either use it while the plant is still in the pot, or after taking it out of the pot and spray the root ball. That should kill the bacteria responsible for root rot. If there very few roots left, the plant may shed a lot of leaves but it may still recover and make a comeback, however if there are no roots it's a lost cause.

@@Daniele63 A few hours ago I checked the roots and basically all the secondary roots have died in fact, they're completely gone, so this is very extreme in severity root rot and decay. The main root was partially decayed, but the remaining parts of it were alive. And there are side/secondary roots, that are somewhat alive here and there and one microscopic root, but it still looks absolutely abysmal. But I still don't have hydrogen peroxide and I don't exactly know which shops have hydrogen peroxide. And the stem is starting to twist, the remaining leaf is basically dried to the point of no recovery. I don't wanna lose my beloved mango. I've never used hydrogen peroxide. I would have already had one for mny months, if I had known where they sell hydrogen peroxide.

I hate after obtaining a new plant, spending literally hours trying to rearrange my existing plants to fit it in😢. I have now got 8 yes 8 grow lights, to have plants in gloomy corners. Only last week i went to my DIY store for building materials, swearing blind NOT to get any more plants! Oops came home with 3 sickly clearance plants and fecking 6 baby lavender which i want to grow indoors WTF i needed help.

Hey Mr.Sheffield and the community! I have a question: i’ve repotted my plants more than 2 weeks ago, pots are not big (13cm), and the soil just doesn’t dry. I moved it to more light and airy area, ruffled the soil but it still doesn’t dry. Do I need to repot it again into another soil? Or should I just wait, because there’s just not enough light and temperature is not high in the apartment? I’m afraid or root rot. Thank you!

Honestly, the method of having my plants double potted - ceramic without a hole outside, plastic with a hole inside works best for me. I put them in the sink, close the drain, water well letting the pot sit in the water for 10 or so minutes, drain the sink, go to bed and when I get up the next morning put everyone back in their sunny space. I guess that works because I've limited my #!
