I agree with you about mixing styles! I love the idea of an eclectic mix of styles. If done right, they all actually compliment each other. I believe that at home, pieces you love always go together because they are a reflection of who you are.

My dad, who was an artist, was personal friends with Charles Eames and we had custom pieces given as gifts. Oh, how I wish I had some of those furniture pieces now!! They were sold for one tenth their worth when my mom died in 1985. My dad even rented Eames ' beach house in Santa Monica...those were the days. It is so interesting to me that the MCM is trending again (at Target!!!) We had original wishbone chairs and a gorgeous white formica topped teak wood framed round coffee table that lasted for decades. It was so well made and durable. Maybe that's why it's never gone out of style? I like eclectic decor; a bit of everything collected over the years. Maybe my beatnik parents had more influence over my style than I thought.

Thanks for this. We bought a 1973 home yesterday that has a secret room still designed from back then, blue tub, toilet, sink, carpet, and glitter flower wallpaper. I’m planning to leave that room as is, except the carpet. I’m going to do MCM furniture throughout the house and mix bohemian and rustic decor because it has beautiful wood floors and a fireplace made from river rock, crystals, and petrified wood.

I may be wrong, but I think it was Gustav Stickley who started the idea that everything in a decorating scheme must match. He was either against Victorian eclectic or he probably wanted to sell more of his products.

When did designers become so boxed in to preach "do not mix styles"? How crippling! and misleading!! I'm an artist and that just upsets me! In my opinion, MCM & Boho mix incredibly well! Rustic cabin with a little modern farm works, too. But then, my home in the mountains is just an eclectic mix with LOTS of pine, an 1878 Irish hutch, an antique oak pedestal table with my red (non-antique/thrifted) dining chairs with red, pink and green shoes on the upholstered seats, and a chair and ottoman covered with (faux) gray & beige cowhide. It's all in one big great room and it all works and it's all mine!!

Every time I see MCM, I’m whisked back to my grandma’s house on a Sunday afternoon filled roast beef and potatoes amidst the cigarette smoke and endless gossip. 🤣 Her furniture was so uncomfortable even though it was stylish for her time. It’s probably my least favorite look overall, but I do really like some aspects of it, and my daughters LOVE it! I totally agree with mixing it with boho to soften it. I’ve seen that done a ton and it always looks great to me.

Yes, I saw 'that video with that designer' as well... she is fun, and has some good thoughts,... but I do believe that it is okay to mix and match....but more importantly, do what you like! What gives you joy!... and to collect decor pieces that speak to you, regardless of the rules...Love the church nursery! so classy!

I’ve been mixing mcm with post modern and it’s just a lovely contrast in pieces, going from the rigid mcm or bauhaus accent chairs with a post modern, more abstract/soft couch

How timely…again! Not long ago your video on designing a room at church came out and I was designing our Sunday School room at the same time. This time I am helping a young lady that has her first bedroom to herself at home and wants me to help her style it. Her eye was drawn to MCM. It is a style that I have only done once or twice in a small, budget-friendly way, and she has no idea other than the style caught her eye, so I needed a little help…and there you were! Thank you! I am going to share this video with her and hopefully we can make more progress. You are right, though! Facebook Marketplace is on to that era and have priced things accordingly. 😭

I grew up with mid-century modern furniture in our home and I have always considered it so out of style until lately when I actually have been a little more drawn to it. Definitely like the softness and interest that Bohemian adds to it. Yes, to mixing styles!

As a young child I remember my family members having MCM in their homes, but my mom was into antiques and furniture from the early 1900’s. So I feel I missed out on MCM as a child in my own home and I have a lot of feelings of nostalgia for it. Love to have it in my home with some boho mixed in. I’m also drawn to more minimalistic style so MCM fits that well.

Mixing all about I like it how it’s pick and choose our own styles. Especially, translated by English finished detail touches. Are coming together. I also like how it also designed focuses on more details including some ideas on finishing touches.

Two things in REAL mid-century design that I wish would come back are full-drum (tall) lampshades and TV console cabinets that actually housed the the screen (rather than just being something that people set their big, black flat-screen TVs on top of). Old TVs were real furniture, art in themselves. To me, a mid-century modern decor room is ruined by a big, black, rectangle anywhere in the room. Smaller, less obtrusive TVs tightly fitted inside a wooden cabinet lends both authenticity, space, and a sense of peace to a mid-century modern room. That's why I'm building my own cabinet to house my small-ish TV screen.

This video was super helpful. I live in a 1940s cottage with knotty pine walls and ceilings. I recently moved in. I’ve been struggling over a color palette, I love all the colors of mcm. I also have wood paneling in the living room space that I would like to paint in a bold color, but not sure what would go well with knotty pine that covers the rest of the home.

I have MCM kitchen & bath cabinets. I would happily trade for someone's shaker style!!! I painted our in a gray with blue undertones & used brushed nickel hardware. Still looks updated & warm. I'm really not a fan of MCM although there are pieces that I like. Way back when... people didn't throw out one style to get another. They just added pieces which made the style an ongoing, growing look. My opinion only! (I do like the church's nursing room.)

After the war, we also became so aware of Scandinavian style. Danish Modern, blond wood stain, etc made the housewife feel sophisticated and clearly differentiated that (even if it came from the local furniture store) that she had."style" not to mention the money to have something new Also for the masses this furniture was small scale. If not Drexel or high dollar designer brands, people were smaller and post war houses were tiny compared to our standards today. Beds were standard size. Tiny dinette sets were the antithesis of today's huge farmhouse and similar tables A child of those days, most families did have Venetian blinds or pinch pleated drapes. Open windows were reserved for House Beautiful layouts or true designer houses. Subdivisions had houses so close to each other privacy was a concern

Bauhaus used metal frames 40 years before. They were the granddaddy to Mid Cent. I was alive in this period and in the middle of the era, it was just called “contemporary design.” It’s only in hindsight that the totality of a design style can be analyzed. Later on, art historians will call our era “mid century revival style” or something. Lol

Scandinavian is also mid tone wood , mostly light to medium but sometimes we have dark wood , usually we use mid century modern in Scandinavian interior -since there is where Scandinavian design really started and modern Scandinavian design is rooted in mid century, also most iconic mid century furniture is Scandinavian, so you cant really speak about one without the other-that said mid century is certainly not only Scandinavian -fun fact around 50% of homes in Denmark have 1 or more Poul Henningsen lamps (mid century) and a lot have Hans Wegner chairs, or Finn Juhl , Kaare Klint, Arne Jacobsen, Børge Morgensen all of them Danish mid century designers -the majority mix modern with mid century or rustic elements so I certainly agree mix all you wan

Can you comment on MCM floor coverings? Your explanation was very comprehensive. It’s a hard style to achieve because it so easily can slide into boho with just one wrong decor item. It’s hard to find side tables large enough for a large lamp. I was born in the MCM era and own several original decor pieces. Another popular item of the era was jewel toned colored glass, especially by Blenko. Also, please don’t paint it if you find an original wood piece.

It is funny how old styles always comeback. Furniture, fashion, and cars take styles from the past and try to use them again. Until recently I was more into modern furniture. Lots of black, glass, chrome, and neutral colors. It looked cool but I realized what it was missing, warmth and life. Now I am trying to transition to MCM pieces.

Galley kitchen with free standing dishwasher and wood paneling in living / dining room, pink bathroom. Large living room window but not much privacy. Its quite a challenge.
