She in quality is actually in many ways like H&M, Zara & other fast fashion brands. What they do indeed worse is all thsirts or sweatpants hoodies and so on that have low quality/quantity or no cotton & sportswear. Denim jeans I have from them are amazing, many many high quality dresses, high quality belts and accessories. Even some sport bras. People buy trends in general so there is no way any fast fashion brand can survive without copying designs. While I agree with most things she said about Shein there is no real solution in my opinion😅. I have worked for a small local brand in my country and they had clothes made in Romania (my country) (with the design stolen) and also clothes imported from China that they claimed were made in Romania.... I could say the same for companies like Apple which engage in unethical mineral mining practices (search colbalt mining). I personally think that is more egregious because people are buying new iphones, macs etc. (sometimes annually) at exorbitant prices despite having functioning devices and do not consider refurbished options. The conditions of these mines are nothing short of hellish and the impact on the environment significant. But people don't want to talk about that. We could talk about the way people purchase food and the wastage from developed countries. The ethics of cosmetic companies and use of palm oil which has led to horrendous deforestation. Even the way we consume essential good likes gas, which is readily available through destabilisation of poorer countries and siphoning their resorces by our elected officials. But people don't want to talk about that. SHEIN should be called out but the bottom line is how we consume in 99% of cases is unethical. These are the consequences of end-stage capitalism and if we want real change not ways to feel self-righteous and belittle people who do not have the means to source "ethical" luxury brands or thrift, we need to look at systemic change not one company.

I bought office attire clothes from Shein because my actual style is street wear. So basically blouses for summer and long dresses for winter. The exact same things at Zara would have been 5x more expensive, and they are made in china as well. Clothes are good quality, at least in my experience, I wash them at 30th degrees to maximise longevity. Imagine I have sensitive skin and I haven't broken out at all. My first order was out of desperation because I couldn't show up at interviews with my baggie tees and shorts. It was a small order just to sample their offerings. Then I placed another order for bijoux and believe me or not they didn't tarnish. Third order was long dresses (super nice, polkadot patterns and cottagecore) fourth order summer mid length dresses and blouses. I bought some bags as well, and they are nice, they look the part and do the job. So yes my formal attire comes from Shein, I'm into streetwear, so for me it's just a cosplay to please prospective employers in corporate. When I lived in the UK I was shopping almost solely at Charity shops or eBay. Here in Italy there aren't charity shops, so for me shein is already expensive considering I was able to get stuff for 2-3 quids in the UK. Just for a thoughtful insider comparison, I was doing market development for a small scale menswear fashion house in Italy. They focused on men suit jackets only. We were able to get a spot at Pitti uomo Firenze. A jacket was 250-300 euros (bear in mind we were cost leaders in comparison to competitors). The company was using solely loro piana and Zegna as their fabric suppliers, factor in Italian wages, Italian corporate taxes and you get the gist. But how many people can afford that price point? O.c our buyer persona and B2B firmographic segmentation were on the wealthy side of the socio economic spectrum.

I also don't do hauls. I buy 3-4 things at a time because their sizing is unreliable. I think if Shein is all you can afford you can be responsible about it.
@adelisa_6293Ай бұрын
If you’re willing to pay at least 15 dollars per clothing piece try Depop or second hand stores. There really is no excuse! We don’t need so many clothes and we don’t need to buy frequently, I don’t even think gaining weight is a problem, you can even get rid of some clothes by reselling and buy clothes that fit. I understand why some people fall in to buying from SHEIN, but there is always a way to implement sustainability in our lives no matter how broke you are. I’ve still yet to shop on SHEIN and my budget for clothes is usually max 10$ I like finding second hand clothes on Depop, up cycling, getting clearances items, and going to local thrifts, so just some examples. In theory we don’t need new clothes, we could go living in three outfits for years, we’re just pushed to buy what we want and not consider how fortunate we really are. Just a perspective, no judgement 🤍
@adelisa_6293Ай бұрын
Also I don’t mean to implement fear but I hope you’re aware that SHEIN is able to put harmful chemicals in their clothes because there aren’t many regulations in China. Stuff like weird chemicals and higher lead concentrations than the us allows. I’d do some research in it if you want to be conscious of just exactly is behind the mass amount of fabric they’re able to get. The world has so much harmful stuff in it nowadays

Charity shops, second hand shops, eBay, literally any second hand site ever. I've won auctions on these sites for £2.00. They all have a huge variety of sizes. Will they have what's fashionable this month? No, but the very newest stuff isn't a necessity. Do whatever you want but don't come here to justify it, there's zero excuse to buy from shein or any clothes shop selling new items (as opposed to second hand) right now.

It's about price. If you spent $10 and it lasted 2 years, well its probably saved you money and is cheaper accumulatively than something more expensive. Although yes, I do agree with your point. Our standards have decreased dramatically as the quality of goods also has. We've become normalised to planned obsolescence and cheap materials. The idea of having clothes that last decades seems unthinkable even though that used to be the norm. Crazy

It's common to see people talking about shein being an unethical company, so they won't shop there and have rude things to say about people who do. A common thing I hear people talk about is the poor work conditions and low pay that sheins employees are faced with. Let me break some news to you guys: most things in your house, are made in China. Your dishes, clothing, decorations, everything. How do you think the workers who made your dishes, clothing, and decorations in China are treated at thier job? Do you think it's any different? And yet you still purchased these things. Probably the second most common thing I hear is that there are chemicals and harmful materials in thier clothing. Another news flash: it's the same thing shopping anywhere else. You have plastics, harmful chemicals, and synthetic fabrics in general making up the clothing you bought from forever 21, hollister, aeropostale, American eagle, walmart, even the holier than thou thrift stores. Where do you think the clothing there came from. CHINA. Or some other country where the cost of labor and materials is cheap. Just. Like. Shein. I'm so tired of people talking about how horrific shein is when I hear almost nothing about any other sites everyone orders thier clothing from. And guess what, the thrift stores just throw away what hasn't sold in a certain amount of time. I know someone who works at the goodwill in my city. None of it is ethical so if you people aren't gonna go to these third world countries and stop it, then shut up about it or be about that life and live off the land with no government help or social media in any way. Your electronic also aren't all that ethical. Shoot even the food we eat isn't all that good if your not thorough with your shopping. Always something new about how you shouldn't eat certain foods, no matter how healthy you try to be. To be as close as cruelty free as you can be; The clothes, products & food you buy would have to be coming from reputable first hand small businesses or handmade from your own home, so to really know, no one was harmed. Majority people are not willing or even able to do that. I also want to mention, supposed ethical fashion is very expensive. Not a lot of us can afford it. If you’re able to live a clean lifestyle then honestly good for you. If you have plenty of money feel free to help out the world. Ps. You choose what you accept into you life. All of its not gonna be pretty, but you have the free will to choose how much.

But it's worth politely pointing out to people that we can all make changes where it's actually easily possible, especially when it comes to clothes. For a few it isn't easy, but for the vast majority of people it is and it's annoying to see people making excuses all over this comment section when they could easily make a change where clothes are concerned. They can do what they want, but they keep trying to justify it like it's okay to buy from shops like this when they clearly don't need to in the situation they've presented.

as far as I know any ethically produced clothes will cost a lot more than what people can afford nowadays. Any brands selling a piece of garment for under $100 probably is just unethical as SHEIN. If I name a few, Zara, H&M, brandy Melville, F21, uniqlo are all in that bundle. The solution is really either spend a ton of your valuable time thrifting, stop buying clothes at all, or only buy those expensive designer clothes made in Italy lol
@SnowflakeRainbowsАй бұрын
Nah. A) Thrifting is super easy nowadays with online websites where you can thrift, b) the average person already owns way too many pieces, so that buying clothes is rarely a need and mostly a luxury and c) yes, other brands suck too, but the fact that shein offers new products daily with these price ranges gives away that they are worse than other brands. Shein is hypercapitalism. 10.000 new items per day, my god.

No, not Italy they use exploited African migrants who they lock in the sweatshops making designer bags :/ I watched a documentary about it…and beware of “made in europe” cause it usually means Turkey where they use child labor more than China and their wages are even lower. Companies have been moving to Turkey from China for that reason but people are too stup!d/uninformed to know that it’s even worse…please look into the brands you support NOT the country or continent. There’s ethical brands in China and sl@ve labor in Italy. There’s no angels anywhere, just capitalists.
@NostraBloomАй бұрын
Comparatively, how much better is the labor that goes into other fast fashion brands like H&M? (genuine question)
@sarahnova1567Ай бұрын
I think it mostly comes down to sheer quantity. I agree that most fashion companies (H&M, Zara, Primark), even those that aren't necessarily seen as "fast fashion" (Nike, Adidas, etc.) have absolutely unethical standards of production and at least some blind spots in their production chains. Most clothing we do wear that isn't made buy on demand or locally will have some sort of unethical labour standards involved. But speaking about the quantity is were it probably makes the difference. It's honestly also a logic I go buy when shopping - the 50 euro Nike shirt will not have more money going to the actual workers than the 5 Euro H&M shirt. However with Shein, considering the shadow with which they dwarf even Primarks production as well as the quality they do put out, it just necessitates a lot more clothing being produced and thus involves many, many more people being affected by this large scale operation as well as them needing to have a much higher output. There is also the issue of forced labour, considering that some of the factories are at least around the areas involved in areas with concerns of genocide (using the YT "allegedly" here). The neverending cycle of microtrends fuels production which can only be afforded by involving an insanely high amount of workers, which the company is zero percent transparent about and actively tries to distract from (e.g., luxury branding, the influencer brand trips...). There is also toxicity comparisons which reflect that there is likely to be more direct contact with chemicals than in other factories. I think it may also be a bit of an "unknown ground" issue - while many companies outsource their labour to countries like Bangladesh and India, which have long been in the public eye for these issues and were at least some teeny-tiny headways are being made, Shein operates outside of international regulatory influences. This is also considering it is not just about the labour, but all the other issues as well. I do think though that there is a clear point, that while no fast fashion brand can be truly ethical and it is not unnecessarily possible to not buy from the under ever-unethical capitalism, Shein absolutely dwarves any of them due to sheer capacity.
@0XxkaaxX0Ай бұрын
it is "better" because it's western companies that exploit people and pollute the environment making money from it (h&m, zara etc.). as soon as Asian companies start making money from doing the same thing it suddenly becomes a big issue...

There is one thing I do stand differently on: If a person has daily or almost daily access to water that can be used to wash clothes and is able to wash these clothes, than they do not need heapes of clothes - and therefore do not need to shop at Shein! If you do not have money - which is not shameful at all! - about 30 items that are washed every week or every other week are enough at the beginning. Who cares if you repeat an outfit? So, for people in better circumstance (with a full wardrobe already and access to a washing maschine), if they still buy from Shein, yes, that should be shamed!

my mom NEEDS to stop shopping from shien, I already told her they steal from designers, she wont listen to me and its disgusting to know that she still shops from shien even though she knows I wanna become a fashion designer.

I used to be a fit model for (actual) quiet luxury brands. Quickly realized that there is a major difference of quality in materials and I simply cannot go back to fast fashion. Your clothes will last longer and fit you soooooo much better. 3yrs ago I bought from Shein to see what the hype was about. All pieces have either fallen apart or have holes. Shein is not it people. Save up your money for better quality clothes. You can also shop at thrift stores! You just gotta know what materials to look out for and avoid, as well as making sure it fits you and/or can be tailored if needed. I still have a few good quality pieces I’ve purchased from a thrift store about 5yrs ago that are still in great condition!

How can people still purchase something from shein? Erm, you're aware of unhealthy work ethic there and their strealing. Amazing video, thanks❤
