My girl died in my arms at the start of the year and it was both heart breaking and beautiful. Heart breaking because she was gone, beautiful because she went so peacefully in my arms knowing how very much she was loved. Her final moments she licked my face, wagged her tail then curled up and went to sleep. Then she just stopped. She had no fear, she trusted me to watch over her in her final moments and gave me the gift of her love as she took her final journey.

He spent a full five minutes looking deep in my eyes conveying that he was tired of the fight and it was time to go. I cry when I think of him even all these years later. My girl crossed the 🌈❤ in my arms…outside, on a beautiful sunny day, at our favorite spot at the park we loved, by the ocean. It was a blessing to rescue her (who rescued who?) she blessed me everyday with love and warmth, comfort and joy. It’s a huge loss, a hole in my heart. But it was a BLESSING to be there, holding her, telling her how much I love her, thanking her, and Assuring her she was going to be in Heaven where my dad would greet her, and now he was allowed to give her as many treats as he wants. Some people don’t get to be with their beloved…surgery, a car. Count this as a blessing and a gift ❤

I too rescued a dog that had cancer. She was nine, had never lived in a house before, and didn't know how to have a relationship with a person. She had been a breeding dog in a kennel all her life. At first she just wanted to hide behind my shed, but one of my cats helped me tame her. Gradually she came inside becoming the sweetest girl, and my close companion, sleeping beside my bed and loving her walks. We had three years together. She left an emptiness in the house with her departure.

We had a beautiful border collie who developed brain tumours at 11 yo, which involved him having seizures. It was horrific and heartbreaking to watch. We asked our vet “how will we know when it’s time to let him go?” And she told us that he would let us know and when he does we will know that that is what he is telling us. And that is exactly what happened. I don’t know if that message from our fur babies can be described and I suspect it may be different with every dog? It’s not just their behaviour it’s a look in their eyes and vibe that they give. I was worried that he would sense that we weren’t ready and would try and fight longer than necessary so I frequently told him that he was the best dog and most loved dog ever and that yes would be heartbroken and miss him terribly but we would be more heartbroken to know that he suffered because of us and when he is ready to cross the rainbow bridge he should go and be proud of himself for the joy that he had brought to our lives. I had heard people say that often our human loved ones need this blessing from us to pass even if they have become unconscious. So I figured since our beautiful boy had always sensed our feelings and needs surely the same would be true for him? And I believe that it was, From the first seizure and with the help of massage and acupuncture he blessed us with another 10 months with him. Then when he told us he was ready I phoned our vet, (who is a mobile vet and the plan had been that when it was time she would come to our home to help him to pass) to let her know that I believed he was ready we made plans for her to come around first thing in the morning. But thankfully he died peacefully in his sleep on his favourite pillow in the early hours of the morning. So if anyone reading this is worried about ‘how to know’ have faith that they will tell you but I believe it’s a two way street you have to have the strength to lovingly thank them for the gift they have been and give them your blessing to put themselves first and go when they need to.

Street dogs in Mexico have a difficult and uncertain life. Shelby’s rescuers removed him from that life and gave him the best possible life with you.
