Shelby, this was a great video that truly highlights what the cost of living in Seattle is like. While it is expensive compared to many other places, I think something people dont understand is that you are really paying for the conveniences and desirablity of living Downtown. I really resonated with your points about the walkability and bikeability of the city center, and how you don't need a car because everything is within reach. But I also wanted to mention something I've noticed about downtown over the past few years. Since COVID hit, it's been a bit of a different scene - more vacant apartments, shuttered offices, and unfortunately, a noticeable increase in homelessness and crime. It's a sad shift, but cities are tough, you know? I'm really hopeful though, because downtown Seattle is starting to bounce back. More folks are moving back and tourists are slowly returning, and that's going to help make it safer and more lively. We just gotta stick it out. As for your move to the Townhouse, it sounds super smart financially. Living with Monica in a place you own is a big win. But, you're probably going to miss the luxury of walking or biking to everything. That's the trade-off, I guess. Suburbs and townhouses have their own vibe and charm though. Anyway, best of luck with your move! Can't wait to see your new place in your next videos. Take care, -Ben

One of the major benefits of living in hi-rises is the amenities that they usually provide (gyms, exclusive restaurants/bars, shared work spaces, pools, etc.). If you were to get memberships to all those different places, it could sometimes justify the higher rent cost. The other benefit of course is those views (11:31) on those lucky days when you are literally living above the clouds! ⛅ You did a great job with the interior design and warming up the place to make it feel less "industrial/commercial" and rather like a home. Looking forward to your new adventure in buying a property of your own.
@LordVelari Жыл бұрын
I lived in one of those glorified cages before. The fact is, very few residents of these buildings actually use the on-site amenities (just go to the gyms/pools and count how many residents are there). People are so busy working (and depressed) that they hardly got the mood to do anything recreational, and when they do, chances are they want to go out of the building to feel a bit of a break. The gyms attached to apartments are seldom satisfactory. To avoid liability, they usually do not have heavy weights in case of injury. If you wanna go there and do some yoga stretches? Fine. Want to boost your max in bench press or deadlift? Better find a real gym. The shared workspaces sounds nice, but they typically come with additional costs. One of the apartments I lived in had this super fancy workspace, but to book it for a group (anything more than 2 people) is an extra $500/hour. In that regard why wouldn't anyone go to WeWork or a library and book it for $50/hour? Restaurants/bars are two situational, so I wouldn't say they are all great or bad, but typically liviing in an apartment building above wouldn't give you much real discount or exclusive rights to access, since no owners are against more customers. In general I think these apartments are nothing more than a golden bird cage - cool for experiencing for a while, and the prestige boost that comes without it. But in the long run, it's not worth it to rent, and certainly not worth it to own (the very limited property rights and the crippling HOA fees would be another chapter)

Whats crazy is that I live in Phoenix which is decently walkable depending exactly where you live, its a huge city, but all of our expenses for a couple including gas, car, rent, bills, literally everything is under $2000...We own our home so it's definitely different than renting, but renting instead of owning would still put us under $4000 per month. I guess you would factor in the better weather, the high rise view, and just the fact that it's a more expensive state to live in...5,700 a month isnt bad. Its kinda cool to see the comparison :)

Thanks for noting that downtown Seattle is just like every downtown and has its problems. I lived there in 1994 (when I was about the same age as you are now! ) to 2000 and it was always the way it is now, as far as homelessness and drugs. I remember it was often sketchy for me walking around there but I loved going to the market and to the waterfront and just all the conveniences of downtown. I miss it a lot. I moved back to the Edmonds area when I got married and had kids. I try to get there as often as I can. I worked there for a long time so I loved getting to see it that way but I still miss being able to walk everywhere so easily and I was in great shape! So hopefully downtown Seattle will recover again from whatever people say is wrong with it, which I believe is exaggerated! Great video and best wishes on your new place and hope you find a great fixer upper to live in soon!
