Great stuff Kyle. I'd certainly agree that having simpler starting surfaces would make Shell work much better - but sometimes you just have to work with what you've got. When Shell fails a result is generally achievable with a little bit of work.

yep, something to start with is way better than "just won't do it" which is how a parasolid kernel modeler fails. Shell gets a lot of hate, some of it deserved, but IMO it's good parts are often overlooked.

not necessarily, you still have to offset, trim and rejoin each surface in the model.

you'd have to plan for that from the beginning. Most folks built the exterior and shell inward. Doing what you are suggesting would change the shape and dimensions of the part. plus you face the same issue with self intersections, just generally in fewer places.

no, but we can import just about anything from any 3d model site like turbosquid, sketchup warehouse etc..
