Please make more videos on small breed puppy training. While the training process may be similar, training small breeds have their own unique challenges. Lorie was very informative and wonderful in her explanations of the what and why for small breeds. I have a chiweenie and have obtained more valuable info in this video than in others that are of large breed successes.

6 months and I still haven't gotten over the loss of my Sheltie, Holly. Every so often I have a flashback and start crying like a baby. I miss her so much. Smart, beautiful and loving. She was a large Sheltie. 45 pounds, which I really loved. We'd had 3 Collies so I was used to a larger dog, in fact our last collie is on the internet, "Collie chases leash". I never get tired of looking at Sara every so often. Better stop now before I start crying all over again.

@CuriousinNY

This was very interesting. My sister had a sheltie from 8 weeks but he did whatever he wanted including incessant barking, pulling on the leash when walking, Nipping and biting when outside and she wouldn’t stop any of it because she said it was all because Shelties are heading dogs and that is what they do. She did take it to puppy training so it could be socialized with other dogs and learn basic commands but leash walking, incessant barking (like when someone left the house) he couldn’t stand it. All my sister said was he will stop after a few minutes. She was against any kind of correction as she viewed it going against his nature of herding and so it would be mean to the dog. So walking on the leash was insane. Always pulling and my sister said that was because he needed to be out front to make sure nothing dangerous was there as well as on both sides of you as well as behind you barking and nipping at you when he was barking and all she would say was he’s herding. He’s doing his job. When I tried to reason with her that farmers with sheep or cattle always have their dogs under control and never let that herding instinct of the dog get applied to humans she said that he was a working dog that needed a job and that he was doing his job. So having certain expectations of a dog - despite it’s breed - is not wrong and is actually better for the dog. That is if I understand you correctly?

Great video! Loved the point of opportunity training. I taught my small dogs to "shake off" on command after coming inside from the rain or snow by simply naming and rewarding when they did it on their own. So, now I can have them "shake off" in the garage or covered porch and bring less water/snow into the house with them.

@michelleh7133
@michelleh7133 3 жыл бұрын
@@kedamono8616 You have to catch them doing it on their own. Name it and praise it. "Good shake off"(excitedly, makes you so happy). Repeat as often as you can. Obviously it's easier in a rainy or snowy season so they are doing it more frequently. Over time, they associate shaking off with being praised and you can ask for it on command. Hope that helps.

Bit late but I think you need to focus on training a great reliable recall if the dog is too small for stuff like a house line and collar. Limiting the amount of space the dog can access with baby gates helps too, so it isn't difficult to reach the dog if they make a mistake out of the crate.

Thank you for these tips. I have a new puppy. She's a chiweenie. I'm having major issues with biting. More than just puppy biting. She was given to me too soon at 5 weeks. The owner initially told me she was 8 weeks then a few days later told me she was only 5 weeks. I think she may be experiencing anxiety. She just turned 4 months. Is it too late to stop this bad behavior? I also have a 6 month old grandson so getting this under control is a must.

How's it going? Just try your best. You can do it. Give her lots of love to. The breeder shouldn't have given her to you this young so it isn't your fault. Everytime she bites you say no or a loud high pitched 'ah' sound turn around and ignore her. Keep on doing that until she doesn't bite you, when she doesn't give her treats.

I'm gonna try and train on walks, while she is on the harness on leash I'll just stop and say stop, and I hope she learns it like that, my mini pincher is almost 2 but her previous owners never taught her anything so I have to start at 0, the stop worked with my bigger dog so I hope it works with her as well but I've only had her for 4 days so idk yet 😅 good luck to you tho! I'm not gonna use a houseline since they like to randomly play so it could be very very dangerous when she runs around and gets snagged in the neck

Could you make a video talking about a puppy’s first heat cycle? What to expect, symptoms, tips and so on. I understand a puppy’s size may determine when they go into heat. I want to be mentally prepared when the time does come. The other day I caught my 8lb, 6 month old puppy humping a friend’s dog. I don’t know if this is the first heat cycle sign and if I should keep her away from male dogs until after her heat cycle. Btw I do plan to get her fixed after her first heat cycle. Thank you in advance and keep up the great videos! ☺️

I don't mind my dog putting her feet on me LOL Cuddle on the couch with me. Jump in my lap. I mean she knows when I say no because her feet got muddy outside or when I don't have time but we have those times together when we do all of that. There are some things I think all dog owners can agree on keeping them happy and healthy, taking care of their medical needs, loving them. stop the play biting when they are a puppy, not letting them tear things up. I just don't think dog owners should feel like they have to train their dog a certain way just because someone else does. If they don't want their dog doing something then train them to not do it and these videos are great for that but not because they feel they have to in order to have a good dog or because someone else thinks they should. I have trained all my dogs and they have all been great dogs. Took longer with the dog I have now to stop the play biting when she was a puppy but we got there and now she is super friendly and never tries to bite or tear anything up anymore unless it's one of her toys 😁💖🐶🦴 My vet said my last dog was one of the sweetest dogs he has had for a patient. If someone came to my home that didn't like something my dog was doing I would just put her in another room because it's the interaction I want with my dog not what someone else wants with my dog LOL Luckily all of my friends love my dog being around them when they come to visit.

I’m struggling so much with my 2.5 year old mini wire haired dachshund. Neither myself or my husband have ever been able to get our guy to walk with us solo on leash, he just gets hyper sensitive to his surroundings and digs in and won’t leave the perimeter of our condo building. He’s great with both of us walking him together everyday. He’s fine going with either of us outside to the bathroom (we’re in a condo) and he’s fantastic off leash. We live at a ski resort. He loves the snow and loves to run off leash along the slopes either when we’re on foot or cross country skiing.. He will walk a certain distance on the slopes with just me off leash which I have also been working for a while with him. He stays in my control and I use high value food rewards with success (stinky treats, homemade chicken jerky).. The main issue with walking on leash solo is getting him far enough away from the building, however, once we get a certain distance he’s like a different dog because he knows he’s on his way home (we tend to walk the same route on leash around the neighborhood together and solo). I really don’t know what else to try.. I’ve watched all the positive reinforcement videos about this I can find and nothing I’ve tried is helping. Also, small dog videos are few and far between. I’ve failed my dog and I am feeling at a loss as to how to help him.. He knows heel pretty well, but he won’t tend to heel in his heightened nervous state. We have consulted 2 behavioralists thus far and neither could help us, because he’s fine walking with more than one person so it’s difficult to recreate the issue unless he’s walking alone with someone (my neighbor could not get him to budge either). Any suggestions or a video would be greatly appreciated.. He also has a fear of riding in the car and whines and paces even though he’s really happy riding in our RV and goes straight to sleep. We’ve worked really hard on addressing his separation anxiety and that seems to be improving, but we still have severe walking and car riding issues which we’d love to find alternative ideas to help him. Thanks for all you do and for any information you can provide us. I’m happy to answer any questions..

Such good timing! Just got my new pup on Saturday! What would be the recommended toys to put in the crate while away at work?
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 5 жыл бұрын
Perfect timing, Lorena! Yes, you can put a safe chew toy in there with your puppy. Something like a nylon bone or an appropriately sized Kong (or similar) would be something we would leave in a puppy crate. It's always best to supervise the puppy's first few hours with a new toy so that you'll have an idea of how intensely the puppy chews. Your puppy may quickly make a mess of some chew toys, and others may last them for a long time. Always remove chew toys from your pup when they've gotten small enough to fit the whole thing in their mouth. A nylon bone is a good example of a toy that you need to keep tabs on once in a while to make sure your puppy hasn't chewed it into a "swallowable" size. I actually have a link to an older video you can watch, that talks about some chew toy reminders for dog owners. Here is a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3mZc3apl5iloZI Happy Training! ~Ken

Hi! I'm thinking on getting a Sheltie! My favourite breed is a border Collie but I don't think we are suited for one as it needs lots of mental stimulation and 100% a job to do. With my Sheltie I'm.planning to go biking with him, and maybe so agility in my garden once I buy the equipment. Is obedience class and agility compulsory for shelties? And can I train my dog at home? I will socialize him but just not in training classes. Dog parks, shops, friends e.t.c. Hopefully you can reply! Also how big does your garden need to be to own one?

Did you ever get a Sheltie ? I had one years ago, and bred her. Kept one puppy. They were the BEST dogs EVER. Im saving for another now. It's been 24 years, I'm retired and lonely. I love my ccx ats but they only love me when they want their wet food. I live with my daughter and she said no dogs, but if I bring an ADORABLE baby Sheltie home, really she'll love it.

@@tammymckeever5720 no I never got a Sheltie because I was planning on getting one in a years time. Oh I so did want one. But I wasn't sure how much exercise and mental stimulation they would need. So i'm going safe and I do want a dog with short fur rather than long. My mum contacted a breeder but not a Sheltie one, a beagle X king caliver Charles spaniel. They seem to need not as much, but I love the temperament of the Sheltie since they are easy to train, beagles not so much unfortunately. Either dog I would love, but you can never have the perfect dog so some trait had to be sacrificed. I haven't had a dog before so I don't know how hard is 'its hard to train a beagle' or how high is 'the sheltie has high exercise, needs high amount of stimulation' because I can't base it off of anything haha.

I have seen this, and if the dog is on a lead, I personally find it cruel. You cannot bike slowly enough, and their little legs can’t keep up. Your distance may also be too much for them when you bike. Your workout is ten times more efficient than theirs, ergo, you have to bike ten miles to expend the energy they do in one mile walking. You want a bike companion? Get something like a Lab.

Already another questions...we also often have more problem with human telling them to ignore the dog expecially at the beginning, not to let the puppy jump on them...I have already started to advice my friend and family...do you also have trick how to tell the human to respect your choice...I think that will explain my biggest issue...please help thank you

there's no real trick. just need to tell them the safety of humans come first and that means having a well mannered dog that doesn't jump onto people, etc.

Keller Ayra My thing was the puppy stayed on a leash near me or in the crate. Then we gave instructions BEFORE the human had access to puppy. Things started going in a direction I disliked instead of correcting the human or puppy I ended the interaction. “Okay puppy is getting excited and is not able to listen to me well at this age so he needs to come calm down. Preferably I crated the puppy or dog and said time for their quiet time. Basically it’s about me deciding who has how much access to my dog or vice versa in a polite manner by giving me a place to put my dog in a safe space for all involved. In a polite manner. As the job of my dog’s advocate and a dog owner ambassador. By be consistent with both humans you are trying to educate and the dog it will become second nature what is expected of them at my house. My dog goes to his space to calmly wait for his cue and humans ignore him naturally until he calmly enters. Then they naturally listen to me when I want something to stop. Whether I ask the dog to go to his place or I ask the human please don’t and why. They aren’t distracted by the cute puppy.

I have a feral little terrier who’s nearly 12 months old. He’s a sports dog (flyball and agility), I’ve done so much training with him but he’s still feral lol. Sometimes he looks and sounds aggressive and he nips me and barks at me during agility. But he’s super dog and people friendly. Some little dogs are just like that. I’m constantly working with my young boy through his “issues” :)

If you want a dog that obeys your commands like a robot, then using treats works. But I want my dog to be a family rather than a robot. They're far more fun and have much more character if they're not looking at your hands all the time for treats. For a dog as smart as Sheltie and also eager to please, simply expressing whether you're happy or sad at their behavior is plenty good enough. Like a child. You don't use treats to train your child do you?

There's nothing wrong with using treats, but you're right that Shelties don't really need treat as they're so incredibly smart and eager to please. My Sheltie has learned to distinguish 'go left' or 'go right' purely because I automatically kept talking to her when she's off leash during a hike
