Using the target stick/'backscratcher" is a great idea for those of us who have small dogs. I noticed though that when she was working with Edna, she didn't use it, only kept bending over.

Because it's not practical advice. you can't hold the leash and put the treat on the scratcher. I mean you can but it is a lot of work.

Plus, you can't put tiny pieces of treat or food on the tip, which is neccesary when you train a tiny pup, and can't use peanutbutter all the time either.

This was a really great video. I heard several things that will make a huge difference in managing and training my puppy. I have an adorable Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy that I love to cuddle and play with, but I am allowing her behaviors that I will not want her to have as an adult. This is unfair to her. She will not understand why the rules will change as she gets bigger. Thanks for the awareness. I will be a better leader for her.

How would you control the treat on the back scratcher and keep the dog on one side? Didn’t see the trainer show this, she did the usual method of feeding treats with her hand. I’m really struggling with my tiny dog, would love to see a video showing what to do in this situation in detail.

I train my dogs to heel on the RIGHT side. That is so I will be between them and anyone coming down the walking trail toward us or passing us from behind. I also train them to heel on the LEFT for times we compete in Rally Obedience.

That totally makes sense, Lisa! We also teach a right side commanded that we call “Switch”. If we are walking and want the dog on our right side, or we want our dogs to turn around and sit in at our right side we’ll use that word. It’s so handy to have a command that causes the dog to go to your opposite side! ~Ken

I have a rescue Chiuaua that was very ill the first few months I got her. I didn't do any of these things, I was just trying to get her well. 😭 She is VERY smart but I didn't follow any of these rules and now she is 5 months old (guessing) and I want her to be the most respectful and kind little girl she can be... Can I begin doing these things now or do I need to use a different approach? She doesn't have a crate and sleeps on the couch and in my bed. She has learned sit, down, stay and leave it but she jumps a lot and barks incessantly when left alone. Any help would be appreciated! You guys are the best!

I don't have a back scratcher but I realised I have a cat trainer clicker with an extending stick that has a little ball on the end- im going to try putting peanut butter on the end! Just unsure when to/how to reward/lure using it...

I have a question regarding my 11 weeks havanese puppy, he likes to lying down on the ground than standing, do you have good advice on how to motivate him to stand, especially training on leash, since lying down is harder than standing position at training. I recently began training my 1 year old chihuahua, how long should our breaks be in between training hours so she isn't over exerted or tired?

That’s a great question, Craft Cat101! Keep your training sessions short and sweet with your Chihuahua. 10 minute sessions a few times per day will be a good way to end each session on a high note and keep your pup excited about the training process! Happy Training! ~Ken

Do not give your dogs cheez wiz or processed peanut butter. Especially pugs. They’re prone to weight gain. Small dogs have sensitive stomachs! No processed foods for them! Never cheez wiz!!!!

With young dogs you need to be smart and don’t make my mistake: start on the healthiest possible diet you and your vet & a specialist can agree on. Why? Because I didn’t do this and my 6yro yorkie now has IBD (irritable bowel disease) which is weird because I was diagnosed with IBS 2 years before her diagnosis. And we both have anxiety. But please NO PROCESSED FOODS FOR ANY DOGS!! Cheez wiz is awful for humans so why would we poison our dogs with it?! Maybe it was just an example but please never give your dog cheez wiz.
