Raj Kapoor (1924-1988) at his best. Nargis (1929-1981) & K.N Singh (1908-2000) complete Awara perfectly!!!! The supporting cast is alright too- father Prithviraj Kapoor as Judge Raghunath, Leela Chitnis as the long suffering mother (she does get vindicated) & even Grandpa as the Judge!!!! Another favorite of mine from Raj Kapoor would be his magnum opus (his autobiography) Mera Naam Joker (1970) which received flak in the beginning- but 50 years into the future it gets the praise & kudos it richly deserves!!!! Long live the legacy of Ranbir Raj Kapoor (1924-1988).

I have only seen a handful of Hindi films in my life, having been brought up in the UK of Bengali parentage. I cannot understand Hindi and I have never before listened to Hindi songs. I decided to watch this famous film which I read was very popular overseas), especially the song Awaara Hoon, after listening to the full version of Mera Juta hai Japani for the first time recently and watching Shree 420. However, although people talk of Awaara Hoon, the most memorable part of this film, for me, was the song 'Dum Bhar Jo Udhoy Munh Phere' at around 1hr 25 min. Even though I am not fond of the Hindi language, I was struck by the beauty of this song. I recall hearing a bit of it on a UK TV documentary about Bollywood history in the 1980s - but I could only remember the words 'O Chanda' - and, at the time, hearing a bit of it, I did not realise what a masterpiece it is. I have got to say it is one of the best songs I have ever heard.

I have heard many time how popular this actor raj Kapoor was in asia specially Soviet union and other countries too but i never watched it it never came into mind but today i saw an india traveller in Russia n he met an retired army that man was in love of raj Kapoor he started singing his song awaara hoon and juta hai japani it made me think about the era of raj kapoor n i found this movie it was so good I regret y I haven't watched it before.. being an Indian its kind of funny m watching this now for the first time..its 3hr long movie but every minute is not boring...feel free to suggest some more like this
