Not really. Having someone that can challenge you is great for preparation but not for getting world records during a sprint. Someone that poses a threat and is neck and neck with you in a sprint could force you to lose concentration and form. But when your racing against the time the world record is attainable. Usain Bolt, flo Jo, Sydney mccaughlin, and wade van niekerk records were all blow outs and ended up being a race against the time, not in race pressure. Shericka biggest problem was chasing the record and not letting it come to her. She literally created the mental pressure that hurt her performance.

@kc5466 That depends on how old you are. If you are 20 years old, like Mboma, coming back to form will be speedier than even 34-year-old Nia Ali who won a silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2016 Rio Olympics barely a year after becoming a mother. Besides, the season starts in March and the Olympics is in August.

FloJo had no real competition either, and PEDs are ubiquitous across all sports. Many sprinters (both sexes) have been tested positive for PEDs over the years, world records have nullified, and gold medals stripped away. However, none of those sprinters came close to having the near flawless technique of FloJo.

@@petewest3122 from what you wrote, I think you don’t really know the history of this!! FloJo did have competition, she was good not great, not the best of the bunch either!! In fact she really made ONE Olympic team individually out of 3 chances!! FloJo went from 10:94 to 10:45 virtually overnight, nothing about her ability, training or anything else suggested that kind of performance!! Sure she looked more muscular, lean but for all her husband’s talk about training regimen….in 30+ plus years no one has been able to duplicate it, not him or any other coach!! If he was that good a coach shouldn’t everyone be knocking on his door for his services!? Where’s the coaching manual of techniques and training methods etc!? Furthermore the drug culture was such that athletes knew when they were going to be tested, for which drugs and could prepare for such tests! The drug testing was also lacking, only able to detect certain types well(oil based), even catching someone like Ben Johnson wasn’t a big deal because the scuttlebutt was Ben didn’t listen to the doping experts and didn’t his own thing, that’s why he got caught!! Then there were athletes who tested positive but for reasons like, the amount was too low(trace) or some crazy mixup or flat out protection by elements, they were never exposed officially!! One said he was told which number of runners in a race would be tested, thus he finished outside of the number!! America, Russia, England, China, France etc all possess the capability and technology required for doping and beating the testing!! The funny thing is of all the countries there’s one that was almost never given the benefit of the doubt regarding their athletes…guess who!? The fact is at this point nothing can be proven so it’s up to the individual to determine from the available information what did or didn’t happen!! From faulty equipment, to drugs to cover-up to whatever, there’s ample reasons for doubt, therefore it exists!! Besides the WRs there really nothing of note to FloJo’s name, nothing!! Not before and certainly not after!! If ever there was a “flash-in-the-pan”, I’d say she qualifies!!
