I don't often comment on videos, but I really think you are the best source of a simple, understandable explanation of how to play a game. My friend got Blood Rage, and in the process of trying to figure out how to play, we happened across your video. After watching, I turned to them and said "I think that was the best board game tutorial video I have seen." They agreed. I subscribed. Please keep it up. PS do you take requests? I don't have any at the moment, but am just looking forward.

Well that is a very kind thing for you to take the time to say. Thank you Fragglrok, I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos! I don't really take requests, because although I don't review, due to the length of time it takes to make each video, I really only want to feature games I'm interested in covering, but I think I have pretty broad tastes, so hopefully you'll continue to find games you're interested in learning about :)

Once again, I have to thank you for your hard work. I have purchased this is a birthday present for a non-gamer relative of mine. Included in the birthday card is a link to this video. Anything more complex than Monopoly can be a bit of a head scratcher for non-gamers, and while this is a pretty simple game, without any gaming experience, even these rules can be daunting. You make a real difference to whether they play it or leave it gathering dust. Great work.

The best tutorial for this game out there. Thank you! A couple of points of confusion (for me!). Let's say a player gets caught trying to get contraband through by the Sheriff, and of course they have to pay a fine equal to the amounts shown on the bottom-right of the contraband cards; who is the fine paid to? Is it added to the player's pot who is playing the Sheriff, or is it paid into the "bank". Likewise, if the Sheriff incorrectly accuses a player of trying to smuggle contraband, is the money paid out of the pot of the person who is playing the Sheriff, or is that also paid out by the bank?
@WatchItPlayed8 жыл бұрын
You must pay a fine to the Sheriff for all confiscated Goods. If you were telling the truth, and your bag has exactly what you declared, the Sheriff must pay you Gold equal to the Penalty on every Legal Good in your bag. You'll find examples of this here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZe9hGVvjaalsK8m40s

Thanks for the reply. So then really, all the cash that's in the bank (after all the players have been given their initial 50) starting money is never actually used during the game? I'm a little confused as the initial starting amount is 1x20 5x5 and 5x1 (50) so what's the point of having the coins that have 50 value?

Good video! Played a 4 player round today and had an interesting situation come up. The person playing the last sheriff before the end of the game was talking with a merchant and said "if you give me one of the apples that you claim is in your bag and you take a cheese from my merchant stand, I will accept your bribe". The idea was that by receiving the apples, the sheriff would become kind of apples and the merchant would become king of cheese. I voted to veto this action as it sounded like bartering instead of a bribe, but the sheriff said he believed it for because bribes can benefit both players. Any thoughts on whether a sheriff can give a merchant something during the inspection phase?
@WatchItPlayed6 жыл бұрын
That's a really tough question! Careful reading of the rules would seem to imply that it's the merchants who bribe the sheriff specifically. So two players directly trading goods is not covered by the rules. If your group wants to play that way, it would be a good idea to make sure everyone at the table is fine with it.

Awesome video, extremely helpful! One thing I'm unclear on - How can I promise contraband in my bag as a bribe if I'm only supposed to declare a set number of a certain legal items? At what point (if any) am I allowed to say, "Well actually, there are a couple of crossbows in there, but I'll gladly give you one if you let me pass!"
@WatchItPlayed8 жыл бұрын
Remember, once you're into the negotiation step, you can "say" anything you want - no one knows if it's true. You could say: "Well actually, there are a couple of crossbows in there, but I'll gladly give you one if you let me pass!", but you could still be lying, no one knows. The Sheriff has to decide between only two options - let you pass, or open your bag. That's what counts.

Hello Rodney. First of all great video! I always love your game videos...they are very informative. I have a question though and I hope I can reach you on this :). With regards to bribing the sheriff at 15:45, how can you bribe the sherrif about contrabands? Isn't it so you cannot declare contrabands in your bag? So isn't it so when you bribe the sherriff contraband, you are already declaring that you have a contraband and it is not a legal good. Sorry just got confused. Also at 16:00, why do you need to prove to the sheriff that you do not have crossbows, just for info purposes?
@WatchItPlayed8 жыл бұрын
The example at 15:45 is a special one. Normally, you wouldn't declare to the Sheriff that you have crossbows in your bag, you would say something like "3 Apples!", however, during the negotiations, you are allowed to say something like "Okay, Sheriff, I confess, I may have a crossbow in this bag, HOWEVER, if you let me pass, I will give it to YOU". You could still be lying about having a crossbow in your bag though. You might not have one at all - in which case, you don't have to give the Sheriff anything, if he does indeed let you pass. But you do need to show you didn't have the Crossbow to give him (which is why you reveal the cards to him - to prove that you aren't just trying to keep the crossbow to yourself, that you promised him).
@bradleyteng73258 жыл бұрын

Ahh another great game, will most certainly play this next time when I'm in the Boardgame cafe. One question though: is there any way for players to get more coins from the bank or all throughout the game do the same 50 coins that were given to each player at the start of the game keep circulating between players through bribes and penalties? I didn't see any additional money being introduced to the economy in the video but it seems there are a lot in the game; saw many 50s and 20s in the box. If the max amount of total money is 250 (5 player game) why are there so many coins in the box and does the designated bankperson has any responsabilities aside from breaking up bigger coins to smaller pieces or combining them into bigger coins upon request?

Thanks Rodney! Great video! I was wondering if you know why the game comes with so many money tokens, when you really only use the ones you start with at the beginning? In the market phase you you may set aside up to five cards from your hand (face down), then draw back up to six cards. The cards you set aside, you will have to discard. However, you can discard less than 5 cards (or none at all), and then you still draw as many cards as would be required to bring your hand size back to 6. Hope that helps.

It would be great see Andrea and Luke in a gameplay with Rodney. I bet we would have a lot of fun :). Gameplay of the Dead of Winter was great! A lot of bluff from Rodney eheh :D. The designer of this game is the brazilian Sergio Halaban. Initially it was "Frontier Game", after that "Robin Hood" and now the name "Sheriff of Nottinghan". It was frontier game, becouse some pepople from Brazil used to go to Paraguay buy things (price there was much cheaper than in Brazil). But not every product was legal bring to Brazil (like cigars and other things, and there was a limit of 250 USD). There is a big bridge in the frontier, people used to go by bus, so sometimes when we come back we were not verified in the frontier, some times we were verified and some times the police accept some brabery to not see the productos. Brazil government force them change the name and flavor of the game. So for me, play this game is so exciting like was pass the frontier 20 years ago eheh (I bought my first computer there). It is pretty much was the real life but with a different flavor :).

I am unclear on how to handle rounds. Does anyone go through the phases at the same time? When do players draw cards at the end of a turn? It makes sense to me that each player follows his turn order from the merchant card, but most videos mention the Sheriff getting multiple bags at the same time, so this is confusing to me...

Hi, I love this game, but I am perplexed by one thing: why did they provide so many coins valued at 50 and 20? There is never a point in the game that you can get more money from the bank, except to exchange coins into other denominations. Why does the game need all those 50s? We just played last night and didn't use any of them.
@WatchItPlayed9 жыл бұрын
Jason Jordan Yes, good observation. I suspect it's because they had space on the token sheet for them, so they printed them, but honestly, I have no idea. That would be a question for the publisher.

So the player who is sheriff first is the player with the most money in "card wealth?"
@WatchItPlayed8 жыл бұрын
+Tough_Cookiez No, the person who has the most actual money in their pockets/wallet/purse, etc. It's really just a rule they included for fun. You can pick the first player randomly as well.

+Phu nguyen The price will depend on where you live and the store you buy from, so I don't really know.

I bought it for $60 AUD at a game store in the city which was extremely cheap - i.e most games are in the $100+ range.

where does the extra coins come into play from the bank?

There is no particular use for them.

Where does the rule that other players can bribe the sheriff to open your bag come from? I'm not seeing that it is allowed (or that it's not) in the rules. It only mentions that the player being threatened can offer the sheriff a bribe.
@WatchItPlayed10 жыл бұрын
Hey Bryan, it's not a rule, so much as a valid method of negotiation. That said, Page 10 gives an example of something similar to this as an indication that this sort of this is allowed (also, having played with the publishers, I've seen it done in practice).
@BryanWojciechowski10 жыл бұрын
Cool, good to know. We played our first game of this over the weekend, and while we had a lot of fun as it was, the opportunity to bribe the sheriff to open another bag will add even more fun next time we play.

Are the storytelling aspects of this game compulsory?

Do you mean the conversations between the players? That is required - but how dramatic you get with it, is up to the players.

How do you choose the first sheriff? Doesnt everyone start with the same amount of money?
@WatchItPlayed7 жыл бұрын
The player with the most "actual" cash on them is given the first player marker. Or you can always decide randomly, of course :)

Why is there so many extra punch board coins if each player just has 50 coins
@WatchItPlayed Жыл бұрын
My best guess is that since they had space on the cardboard for more tokens, they just created extra.

How do you promise the sheriff contraband if you're not allowed to declare it? kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZe9hGVvjaalsK8
@WatchItPlayed8 жыл бұрын
You don't declare contraband. However, once you enter the negotiation stage, and the Sheriff is thinking about opening your bag, you can really say anything you want.
@dadamssg878 жыл бұрын
Okay so you're saying you can declare 3 apples and then when the sheriff acts like he's going to open your bag you could say, "wait, hold on a minute. IF there's a crossbow in there i forgot about, you can have that" and if the sheriff agrees and you don't actually have a crossbow, you still have to reveal to just the sheriff so he knows he got tricked, correct?

Can anyone tell me why the game comes with so many coins? There are over 10 coins worth "50", but it is impossible for anyone to have that many coins! At most, a player could have 5 of them, but there are at least 10

I've heard they are intended to help keep score at the end when you are awarding King and Queen bonuses and cashing in your goods.

Mainly because they had extra room when on the sheets when they were manufacturing, I believe.

@WatchItPlayed8 жыл бұрын
Any Goods that you did not truthfully declare are confiscated. The Sheriff takes all of those Goods and places them on one of the discard piles, in any order he chooses. You must pay a fine to the Sheriff for all confiscated Goods. The fine is equal to the Penalty shown at the bottom of each card.

Why is there so much money with the game when only a small amount is used?
@WatchItPlayed7 жыл бұрын
When manufacturing a game, they have to cut a certain size of cardboard, based on their other sheets they intend to cut, and that means, you can have extra space on a sheet for cutting more tokens.
@zerosbladex87 жыл бұрын
So... what's the point of the gold coins worth 50? There are plenty of 20's, to the point where if one player had all the money in a 5 player game there would still be enough 20's to account for that.

Yes, they included a lot of extra money.
