In this video, we're going to learn how to play Coup! If you have any comments or questions, please do not hesitate to post them in the KZbin comments below.
At 8:44, after being challenged and proving that they have a role, the challenged player would right away replace their revealed card with one from the court, before continuing with resolving their ability (in this case, the Captains).
Two Player Coup & Two Player Variant
When playing Coup with two players, the starting player receives only 1 coin at the beginning of the game.
As a variant, Coup can be played with two players with these changes to the setup:
Divide the cards into a 3 sets of 5 (each set has one of each character).
Each player takes one set, secretly chooses one card and discards the rest.
Shuffle the third set and deal one card to each player and then put the remaining three cards face down as the court deck.

Two Play Coup: The starting player only receives 1 coin instead of 2. You may also play with these adjustments: Divide the cards into 3 sets of 5 (each set will have 1 of each character). Each player takes a single set, and chooses 1 from it secretly - discarding the rest (unseen). Now shuffle the 3rd set, dealing 1 to each player, putting the remaining 3 cards face down as the Court deck.

Thanks for the helpful video! In summary, here’s how to play Coup quickly in just 100 words: Players receive two action influencer cards in hand and two coins. Eliminate and turnup all opponents’ influencers cards to win. On your turn, either take 1 coin as income, take 2 as foreign aid (can be blocked by opponent’s Duke card), take 3 as tax with Duke card, eliminate opponent’s card with 7, eliminate a card with 3 and Assassin (blocked by Contessa), exchange Ambassador to select 1 of 2 drawn cards, steal 2 with Captain (blocked by Captain or Ambassador). Eliminate one card when challenged for bluffed action/block without supporting card or failing a challenge. Replace challenge surviving card.

My friends love coup. It's really fun when you turn it into a drinking game. Along with your 2 cards you also get 2 shots of whatever you want. (Personally I do kamikaze) When you lose a card you take a shot. And winner can give his remaining to whoever he wants. Makes for a fun couple of games

Great video thanks, very detailed and clear. I only have one question, which might be a bit silly but whatever. So for the cards with secondary blocking effects; specifically Captain and Ambassador Blocking steal and Contessa Blocking assasination, do you have to be the person that is the victim of the stealing or assasination in order to use these abilities and claim you got them or can you, as an unrelated third person still prevent a stealing or assasination by claiming you have captain, ambassador or contessa, like you would block a foreign aid, despite it not effecting you directly?
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. A player cannot attempt to block a player, if they are not the target of the attack. The only time a player who isn't the target can block an action is when someone takes Foreign Aid which has no target - so anyone is allowed to claim a Duke to block it. Hope that helps.

@@WatchItPlayed thank you very much! Also another question, is claiming to have a Countessa equally as dangerous as challenging the assasin claim that can potentially lead to immediate loosing? Because if I understood correctly, if someone wants to assasinate your characters and you claim having Countessa without having her and you get challenged, you should both reveal a character of your choice and your other character will be assasinated.

You only get the effect on a revealed card, if that was the card you claimed to have. Put another way, if no one challenges you, you get the effect you are claiming to have (even if you don't have it and you were lying). You also get the effect if you're challenged, and the card you flip over is the one you claimed to have.

What if I have one card and I have or claim to have the ambassador do I get to take two cards frm the deck and then pick any 2 cards frm the three or do I just have to take 1?? this is one of my only questions and I haven’t seen anyone cover this in a video. Also if I have the ambassador and then take two cards frm the deck to swap can I still keep the same ambassador with me or do I have to always shuffle the proclaimed ambassador??
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Humid, you will find this covered in the video. In the Ambassador section is explains that the effect allows you to "exchange" cards you've drawn with any you have face down in front of you. So if you only have 1 card in front of you, you only have 1 to exchange. The video also explains that you don't have to keep any of the ones you drew (which means you could keep your ambassador). kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooHPc3eQo917h6M

Player Y would lose both cards. One card for being wrong in a challenge and another for being assassinated. If Alice blocks it doesn't matter whether Bob has the assassin or not, they have accepted the action as truthful and chosen to block it. If Bob challenges Alice's contessa, Alice can't change her mind and challenge Bob's assassin, it's too late. HOWEVER, if Alice first of all challenges Bob's assassin, and Bob DOES have the assassin; Alice loses a card for the failed challenge and THEN the assassination goes ahead - so she can then claim her remaining card is a Contessa to block the assassination. If she doesn't, she will lose both cards in one swoop, but it's now up to Bob (or anyone else at the table) to decide whether to challenge her Contessa...

Hello Rodney! I'm sorry for my English, because I'm from Russia. I'd like to ask you a few questions. 1) First about it: "At 8:44, after being challenged and proving that they have a role, the challenged player would right away replace their revealed card with one from the court, before continuing with resolving their ability (in this case, the Captains)." In that case could I use another abilities several times per turn? I'm talking about a situation where they don't believe me all the time and lost their influence. I hope I made it clear. 2) In a situation where the player lost the challenge, he has to reveal one of his cards. Who have to flip one of his cards If I successfully assassinate him? Is it him or I am randomly picking one of his cards? Thanks in advance for your reply. You're doing great!
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 6 жыл бұрын
1) Hey, sorry, it is a little tricky to understand this first question. On your turn, you get your one action. You don't get multiple actions. You say which action you are going to take, and then that's the action you are taking (unless you are proven to be lying). 2) If you assassinate someone sucessfully, they choose which card to reveal.
@maroetsu
@maroetsu 6 жыл бұрын
I'll try to phrase the first question better. In the situation at 8:44 if another player, not the one whom i'm directing my ability (captain for example) at, challenges me and is proven false, can i still use the ability of the newly drawn card or is my turn basically over?
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 6 жыл бұрын
When someone challenges you, if you were proven to be the role you said you were, you still perform that role, even though you now have to trade it away for a new card. So, for example, if you tried to assassin someone and get challenged, but prove you were the assassin, you get to do the assassin's action (then you discard and draw a new role card (so people don't know for sure what role you have in your hand).

Hi. First great video! I've heard people mention the following rule and I'd like your take on it. Imagine you attempt to assassinate me. I can call you out on not having an assassin. If you have one you show it to me. I can then state that I have a contessa. To me this seems overpowered, and I should pick one or the other (or accept the assassination of course). What are your thoughts?
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Conor, according to the rules, you declare the role you want to use first, and then it can be challenged, and then you claim counter-actions, which can also be challenged. I tend to avoid calling out what may or may not be overpowered, as I find that's often a matter of personal preference/experience/feel. The assassin is a powerful move, and therefore it it has a couple of ways to be stopped, and that feels right to me, but that doesn't mean it will for you, you know what I mean?

If you are wrong about the challenge you lose a card AND the assassin goes ahead with its action -- so you will lose BOTH cards in one go. If you claim Contessa you can block the loss of ONE of those cards (the assination) but you still lose a card for a failed challenge
@jamesbrowne5496

I believe your captain example is incorrect. I think after the right player challenges you, your captain would go back in the deck and you would draw a new influence. Then you would choose from your two cards which to sacrifice when your block challenge was lost.

I've gone back and re-watched and I follow what you are saying. Thanks for pointing this out. As you say, after proving that the player did in fact have the captain, they would get a new card right away before continuing. This was done out of order in the video. Very sorry for any confusion. I've added a note to the description of the video about this.

Do i still get to steal 2 coins before reshuffling my captain into the deck ? And if I still get to steal the 2 coins before reshuffling, what if ( like in your example) player 3 decises to block w another captain and I challenge him & failed? Is it as @jbrown mentions ? I get to choose between which 2 new influence cards to reveal ?

Hi Rodney, big fan! I have a two questions I'd like to ask: 1.) Can a challenge be issued via claim as well? Like for example: If someone claims Captain against me, could I challenge that claim by claiming I have Ambassador for blocking? 2.) Does an opponent have an opportunity to take back his claim? Referring to the previous example, can the player using the Captain against me, take back his claim in response to the issued challenge?
@WatchItPlayed

1) Any action or counteraction can be challenged. 2) Nope. If challenged, you must prove you had what you said you had.
@rubendekemp4752
@rubendekemp4752 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Red_Swindler, to clarify for #1, by claiming you have the Ambassador you are not actually CHALLENGING your opponent's claim. A challenge is solely defined in this game as calling someone's bluff on whatever card they are claiming -- not countering it with another card. What you are doing is COUNTERING him. :) The distinction here is important -- once you have claimed your Ambassador, there is no longer any onus on your opponent to prove his claim. Instead, you are now the one who can be challenged! Nomenclature aside, what you describe is indeed, perfectly legal, and exactly in the spirit of the game :)

Also, what if a player is challenged claiming to have the ambassador is challenged while using his ability? Does he gets to change twice? One for the challenge and another one for the action he called or he changes for the challenge and gets to pick another action?
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 5 жыл бұрын
Although the assassination doesn't really happen (because the target basically killed them self anyway), the action is still considered to have taken place, as I understand it. When taking the assassin action, you declare your target and spend your money - then the challenge occurs. You don't get to take the action back or your money. The rules don't specifically cover this, but that's my understanding.
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 5 жыл бұрын
If you claim to have a card, and you prove that you do - that is the action you are doing this turn. In the example you are giving, you'd first replace the shown Ambassador after the challenge, but then you'd perform the exchange after that. Again, as I understand it. Once we get into areas not specifically covered by the rules, we are stuck following the rules provided, to the best of our ability.

The question is a little confusing. If you declare you are the Duke and try to take 3 coins (which is the Duke's power), than that cannot be blocked (you'll see on the helper sheet, the Duke ability cannot be blocked) - however, someone can challenge that you are the Duke. They don't have to declare what they are, they just have to say "Hey, I don't believe you're the duke, prove it!". Then you either prove it and they lose a life, or you can't prove it, and you lose a life. Hope that helps.

Wait what? @10:30 If you falsely claim an Assassin and lose a challenge you do not get your 3 coins back. The coins are spent regardless. “If an action is successfully counteracted, the action fails but any coins paid as the cost of the action remain spent.” pg4 of the rulebook.

Remember, there's a difference between being Counteractions (blocking) and being Challenged. So if I claim to be the assassin, and spent 3 coins, but then someone calls my bluff and says "I don't think you're the assassin". If they are right, I lose a card, but I get the coins back.

hi i'm a bit confused about whether you can or cannot keep those coins after a successful or unsuccessful challenge. here are three example scenarios: 1/player X claims to have a Duke and tries to take 3 coins. but player Y challenges him, and player X doesn't have a Duke when revealing. player X lose one card. but what happens to those 3 coins? will he still keep it? and what if player X actually has a Duke? 2/ player X chooses to take foreign aid. player Y claims to have a Duke and stops him, but player X challenges. upon revealing shows that player Y has no Dukes, then what happens to those 2 coins? what if player Y actually has a Duke? 3/ player X claims to have a Captian and tries to steal player Y's 2 coins. player Y claims to have a Captian and tries to stop him. player X challenges, and after that shows that player Y has no Captians. what happens to those 2 coins? and what if player Y actually has a captian? please explain these for me. thanks a lot
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 5 жыл бұрын
1) If the player didn't have the Duke, the coins would be returned to the supply. If they did have the Duke, they get to keep the coins. 2) Player X in this case would get to take the 2 coins as normal. If Player Y did have the Duke though, those coins would be returned to the supply. 3) The two coins would go to player X in this situation as player Y couldn't actually block it. If player Y did indeed have a Captain, then player Y would keep their coins as the steal would be blocked. Hope that clears it up!

A small problem we've come across while playing this game is when a player is down to one influence and is being assassinated. In this case, the player should call out the person claiming to have the assassin no matter what because they have nothing to lose. If they challenge and they're wrong, they're out. If they don't challenge, they're dead. Any way around this?
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 5 жыл бұрын
You could also claim to have the Contessa, forcing someone else to have to challenge you, risking their life. That said, once you are down to one life, you do start to run out of options - but I suspect this is by design (it helps the game end, and not go on too long - there will be a final winner).

Hey Ralph, I'm having a little trouble following your wording, so forgive me if I'm not answering what you're trying to ask. For Example 1: Yes, the steal still gets to happen. For Example 2: The challenge would happen first, and if Player 1 DID have the assassin card, then Player 2 would lose 1 card for losing the challenge. Then the Assassination action would happen, EXCEPT, Player 2 could then claim to have the Contessa, which could block it (though Player 2 might be challenged first)

This is hard to explain, it's something that makes more sense as you play, but you can get suspicions based on what they've claimed to have in previous rounds (if after a couple of rounds they've claimed to have 3 different roles, that's impossible, and they were lying about at least one of them), or based on the cards you're holding in your own hand. A common mistake, but the way I say it here is correct. There's never a slow month :) Just keep in mind everyone's idea of what "needs" a video is different. I think Coup has some tricky spots in the rules that trip people up when they play, and it's a game that is still being printed and sold (due to its ongoing popularity), so I think the video will still have value to people. It was good timing for me personally, because I just wrapped some complex tutorial videos, and creatively I like to mix it up.
