I think the brilliant part about that Eurus reveal is that when u actually look, its simply just a wig, contacts and some makeup, and still most people didn't catch on, the actress "Sian Brooke" is amazing
@starprincess667 жыл бұрын
and glasses (and the glare in the glasses) and the way the lighting was used and the way the scenes were shot. I think it's mostly the costume/makeup department and "camera magic" that succeeded in making her unrecognizable. Not to mention, the plot is going so quickly with loads of flashbacks.

Where are all the Emmys for this episode? Really thought Ben, Martin, and Sian deserved some recognition. One of my favorite moments is the scene with the kids, where Sherlock realizes that John is starting to believe him. And he gives a little smirk. Heh. I've said it before, but I cannot stand to see Martin Freeman cry. Nope. Can't do it. And how much has Sherlock grown? Can you imagine S1 Sherlock comforting John like that?

Show of hands, who else thought for a split second that the fake psychiatrist was going to be Andrew Scott in a wig? Also, I thought it would turn out that Sherlock had been given the memory drug and that's why he was having trouble remembering. But then that didn't happen. :P

There are some wonderfully used editing, filming and writing techniques in this episode which brilliantly misdirect the viewer from making the connection that all three women are played by the same actress whilst never actually hiding her from view. It also helps she is very good at playing all three so differently and establishing their personalities in a short space of screen time. This episode is loosely based on the short story, Adventure of the Dying Detective, in which Sherlock feigns he is dying to ensnare Culvert into trying to finish him off and confess his murder of his nephew, which he does. But when the police arrive Culvert points out his word in court is as good as Sherlocks, only for Watson to emerge from behind the drapes as witness- paid homage to in this episode by having the recording device in Watsons cane. As others have pointed out this has been adapted to reflect the terrible real life situation at the BBC of its national star and once national treasure, charity raiser and do-gooder Jimmy Saville- who turned out to be one of the most horrific predatory pedophiles in British criminal history, using his position, celebratory and charity works as cover for his crimes and getting away with it until his death. Even though they made Culvert a serial killer instead the parallels are clear, it was a brave script to present to the BBC in one of their own flagship global shows.

it is crazy story telling, because it is Moffatt and Gatiss who write for doctor Who and run it doing the same stuff. Making you crazy with random stuff. LOL I loved season 4 of Sherlock. A lot. Also, that was Toby Jones who played the villain. He also played the Dream Lord in season 5 (I know you have already watched that, so it is not a spoiler) of Doctor Who. He is very good at creepy.
@hypnobloom99177 жыл бұрын
The vast majority of people didn't guess that "Faith" was Bus Girl and ofc Eurus! Toby Jones the villain seemed to be like a mix of Jimmy Savile and H H Holmes. I like how you caught onto the nice connection between Sherlock assuming John had a brother and John doing the same. I guess it really is a testament to the actress that we didn't guess! I felt Faith and Bus Girl seemed completely normal but the therapist's wig/voice did seem sorta janky to me though of course I couldn't guess!!!

Roger O'Donnell And people in places. Have you ever been somewhere and a friend sees you, but you don't see them? I do. If you don't expect to see them at a certain place then you won't see them. Or at a place at a certain time. Amazing how we accept things without questioning then. A doctor in a hospital for example. The brain filtering out everything unimportant and blinding us to thinks. Powerful bit of kit.

I don't think anyone saw the reveal coming. Only if you watch it back to back or have a degree in criminology or psychology. I didn't, but when watching at the time we had a week of a wait which helped the reveal. The way they hid the real Faith in the beginning, never getting a good look at her face. Just the glasses, hair, lipstick, voice and dress. You just though it was the same woman. Brilliantly done and always part of the story. The full circle back to the first episode with John's sister and the villain. Hiding in plain sight. The build up to the twist was there and to be fair in other series. Like when Mycroft said "You know what happened to the other one" in His Last Vow. You focus on the story you don't realise the build up to the twist. Beautiful written the story resolves itself, you think the end is here then bang twist time. Can't wait to see your reaction for the next one.

Toby Jones was also, of course-The Dream Lord in 'Amy's Choice' and turned-up in 'Captain America'. Apparently this character was inspired by an American serial Killer from the 1900s who had a 'Death House' purposefully built with inner mazes, traps etc so he could kill people at ease! Jones and Mackenzie (Pirates of the Caribbean') Crook are good in 'Detectorists' which is a rather more light-hearted show about two treasure-hunting friends.

I really like this episode, but all of the John and Mary stuff doesn't really work for me. Mary's whole "go to hell" thing makes no sense unless Mary is a total freaking sociopath, and I just don't buy that John is so mad at Sherlock for something he really didn't do. Outside of that though it's well directed, well acted, and engaging. Savor it while it lasts because the next episode is a gigantic mess.

I loved the scene with Mary reminding John that she really was dead. It just feels so weird that Stephen Moffat can do that so well in Sherlock, but in Doctor Who, even when someone dies, they always come back. 'I am dead', is a chilling line, and it should be, actions should have lasting consequences. On a lighter note, I loved the reveal of Hudders as the driver. >_
@rog22247 жыл бұрын
Different demographic - 'family' viewing compared to 'adult'. Moffat has spoken at length, reapeatedly, on the subject. Having said that, there's nothing in Sherlock my late mother wouldn't have allowed me to watch as a child, but then, her favourite Christmas film was Die Hard, and, as I discovered when I was clearing things at her house, she had a bigger collection of direct to video 90s action films than me and my friends combined (I knew she liked them, I just didn't know the magnitude of the collection), so perhaps I'm not really a shining example.

Each to their own - a little of it is fine by me but in this case the whole episode just became an exercise in pulling variations on the same twist to the extent that I found that took precedence over just telling a story. It was what seemed like the final triumph of style over substance - or writers just plain showing off.
