I still love the fact that, in the end, Holmes actually loses to Moriarty. He won the war, but he couldn't win the final confrontation. The only way to finish him off was to go for a stalemate. (I.e. throw both of them off a cliff.) It reinforces Moriarty's ruthlessness, and really makes it clear how easily this could have gone wrong. Holmes truly was facing his greatest rival, and it took everything he had to win.
@pifeg4 жыл бұрын
Though to be fair, the takeaway I got from the ending was that, even though Holmes may not have planned every single twist and turn he and Moriarty would go through, he still was planning to go over the egde, hence the breathing apparatus. I do think out of the two, Moriarty was stronger at the party, due to Sherlock's shoulder wound, which gives him the edge he needs to beat Sherlock in their fight.
@GanonGhidorah4 жыл бұрын
"A winning strategy sometimes necessitates...sacrifice..."
@Dreadjaws4 жыл бұрын
No, Sherlock definitely won. He took a step Moriarty wasn't willing to do or even considering Holmes would do. He did outsmart him. If Moriarty had even thought for a moment that Holmes could sacrifice to bring his own end then he might have planned for it and have their game of chess in a different place. And it's not like it was a spur-of-the-moment idea Sherlock had. He was carrying the breathing device with him, so he was definitely one step ahead. In fact, it was Moriarty who initiated the idea of a physical confrontation once he realized he had lost. That's the hallmark of a loser right there: someone who throws the board once he sees his defeat is inevitable.
@AshGCG4 жыл бұрын
Which is possibly why there couldn't be a third film. Regardless of how well the first or second film did at the box office, if this was truly the battle to end all battles . . .what could possibly follow it? And by this I mean, I agree with you. I do like the RDJ cinematic version of Holmes, and would have enjoyed a series of films with these actors playing these characters but, ending the Moriarty nemesis theme in the second kind of hammered home the last nail. Where do you go from there?? Maybe it should have been a one-and-done film (which I'm not against) or the Moriarty theme should have been a cloud that shaded and lurked behind a series of films. Oh well. Never mind. There's always the Cumberbatch series.
@Leclwrd4 жыл бұрын
@@AshGCG You can go the Logan route and have an older Sherlock well past his prime. Some villain pops up and only he can deal with it, so he has to learn how to be Sherlock again. Now I'm not saying that's a good idea or anything, but that there is plenty of room to make a 3rd film.

@drops2cents2604 жыл бұрын
@@tiaaaron3278 > It's what BBC version lacked. Hmmm, I'd rather think that they actually picked the perfect Mycroft for the films and the BBC series respectively. In my humble opinion, Gatiss as the mysteriously powerful and seemingly aloof Mycroft who secretely does care and always supports his little brother fits very well into the TV series. For instance, there's that scene in in season one (Ep. 2, IIRC) where Mycroft and Sherlock have this short chat where Sherlock is a little off of his game and Mycroft provides him with a single cigarette, which is just the small but supportive brotherly gesture Sherlock does need at that very moment. That's what the series build on, and do it well: showing two brothers being quite distant and not really always on the best of terms, but at the same time do care quite a bit about each other in a slightly secretive manner, even among themselves. Whereas in the films, Stephen Fry plays Mycroft in a way which (at least in my opinion) does fit much better into the more light-hearted (and very subtle humourous) setting of "A Game of Shadows": Fry's Mycroft ist much more approachable, social and sometimes even funny, while at the same time (as you pointed out correctly) still being mysterious, ingenious - and sometimes also a bit of a smartarse when he knows that he'll get away with it.

Jimmy Rustling Indeed, I can see how people who would like an exact interpretation of the books wouldn’t really like this series. As someone who enjoyed the mysteries as a kid, though, I found this version of Sherlock Holmes rather interesting. Funny, even. And setting aside that it is not a pure adaptation of Sir Doyle’s books, one has to admit that the series is very well written and directed and filmed and scored. If you don’t like this series because it isn’t like the original books, that is completely understandable. I at least have to give you props for not being the usual complaint that it is “not as good as BBC Sherlock.” (Which I also enjoyed, but I have more of a nostalgic connection and also better enjoy the aesthetic of the RDJ series) 👍
@hardygal24 жыл бұрын
@Jimmy Rustling Again, of course, understandable. I've read the source material, and I can understand where some hardcore fans are coming from. I guess as long as I think a movie has done well in doing something pretty new, I can personally overlook such things. That said, Sherlock Holmes is public domain now, so there will now forever be new interpretations of the character. Guess we'll have to see if they're up to snuff, be it in perfect conformity or in enjoyable innovation

Indeed, very few people notice that, Dr. Watson's (avatar of ACD himself in my own analysis) accounts of the endeavors of Holmes could very well be a romanticized version of the facts, when you read it you can actually feel like he's spicing things up to make it close to fantastic, also the aspect of the author being the author (my theory) is pretty cool.

This is something that’s so important in writing. Too often writers will write characters smarter than themselves and it’s cringe. Spider-Man: No Way Home suffers from that. In that movie the smart characters use big words to let you know that they are smart. However in A Game of Shadows they show you how the characters are smart by having them scheme and plan. Then their plans clash and they adapt. It’s brilliantly done.
@vol942 жыл бұрын
I liked the first movie more, without doubt the best sherlock Holmes adaptation, but Jarred harris as Moriarty is gold, and a game of shadow's ending was better than the first, what with the chess match and the, "You're not the only one who can play this game," masterpiece. Heck, their first meeting, when sherlock starts analysing his hand writing to share insights into Moriarty's character was awesome!

5:00 - Well, not quite. Creating suspense by constantly shifting the power dynamics only works if every turn has been properly *set up.* It is the hallmark of cheap writing to see characters in a verbal power struggle constantly pulling deus-ex-machinas out of their asses that are entirely unfounded in the previous plot. This is what crops up in some of the later BBC "Sherlock" episodes, like when Holmes walzes into the room revealing that he had planted a recording device on the villain all along: this does not feel _earned_ because it comes completely out of the blue. 8:30 - Ah, I bitched too soon. Glad we agree on this one. 😉😘
@luciesimpson64374 жыл бұрын
It also loses a lot, too, if it's too obvious, though. It's like the monster - you can't show a well-lit horror in 10 angles of glory any time before act three; same with broadcasting the emotional/thematic climax of a plot. Regardless of how intricately crafted the bombastic thriller mysteries of the Richie Holmes films are, I find them less enjoyable because it feels like I've seen all this before...then again, that is me personally. I'd call the cleverest made film I've ever seen Hot Fuzz, but being English maybe I'm biased :P
@Noone-of-your-Business4 жыл бұрын
@@luciesimpson6437 Hot Fuzz? I can readily agree with that. Although I was confused in that one at the beginning. The protagonist was _so_ flawless in the execution of his duty that I expected all this to turn out to be the power fantasy of an unreliable narrator. It all sounds far too good to be true: he is being transferred because he makes his station look bad? Yeah, you wish. Otherwise, though, I agree: perfection. 😎

The strongest visual metaphor for Holmes and Moriarty's relationship is that in the scene where Moriarty literally has Holmes on the hook, the time when Holmes appears to be most vulnerable and Moriarty is in absolute and total control, is the time Holmes subverts this by making his big move and swapping journals with him. Additionally, if I recall, in order for Moriarty to get a little more intimate with his domination (not in a dirty way) of Holmes he actually lets Holmes off the hook so he can get up in his face about who is in control, but it is here where Holmes is able to make his move and he wouldn't have been able to without this show of hubris. It's a game of cat and mouse except that cats also play with their food. Except that this mouse has a trap set up that only works if the cat doesn't immediately eat the mouse but instead lets its guard down at the moment when it seems like the mouse's fate is inevitable. This has been the dynamic for the whole movie. Like someone else was saying, Moriarty could have ended Holmes a thousand times using his resources but he was toying with him because Holmes is the only opponent who can appreciate his genius; the mark of a classic megalomaniacal super villain. Holmes knew this and waited for some opportunity to get close enough to grab the book. (I think I had one more point but I forgot)
@mish3754 жыл бұрын
In clinical terms, Moriarty would be a classic psychopath. And one major weakness of a psychopath is their arrogance. Pride is a major vice of a narcissist like Moriarty, and Holmes uses that against him.

One of the best things about the stories and even BBC Sherlock is the (platonic) affection Sherlock and John have for each other as BFFs and the joy and excitement they have for The Game makes season 1 and 2 pretty fantastic television. Law's Watson seems to be dragged along for the ride very reluctantly, seems to resent Holmes like everything is happening *at* him instead of being *with* Holmes, which is a bummer

Besides some stretches that really push the limits of what Holmes can actually predict in the second film specifically (in regards to the Homesvision scenes), both of Guy Ritchie's Downey-led _Sherlock Holmes_ films are quite underrated. They truly are epic intellectual movies that grow better with each rewatch. Especially when you start seeing more and more subtle unspoken details that speak volumes about the characters. They also take the source material and really put a sustainable new take on it, while still staying loyal to the essence of said original material (aka. _Dark Knight_ trilogy-style). Really looking forward to a third outing, but also scared because it's been a long time and I'm not sure they will stick the landing, especially if Ritchie is no longer involved.

I've only seen a few adaptations (Basil, Benedict, RDJ), but this one is my favorite! It's the only adaptation, IMO, where Sherlock feels like a person, not an archetype or a caricature of himself. There's more to him than his big brain: the fighting skills (and the way fights are shown in this series), the experiments, the fact that while he's a logical man, he's not a callous or emotionless man and he does care about both truth and people, his relationships that feel real and lived in (if that makes sense)... It's also nice to see Watson depicted as a formidable foe in his own right. He's not supposed to be dumb or slow; he's a military doctor!! He's brains and brawn!
@NotAuburn17 күн бұрын
@@sarahb.7175 This adaption of Watson is definitely my favorite, he's a hero/co-lead in his own right. I also love how this version of Watson seems to be the voice of reason, but once the veneer is cracked you can see why he gets along so well with an odd duck like Holmes, because he's kind of weird himself. This version of Holmes is just enjoyable, not that I don't like other iterations. They really brought out both his manic genius, as well as his very real flaws, but you can see why he wants to solve crime in the first place. Holmes would never be a detective if he didn't genuinely care. Sure, he likes the competition and the praise, but the job itself requires empathy and understanding of human nature.

Also, it has to deal with the Fallout of Holmes' death. Both in the original stories and the BBC show it takes several years before Holmes returns to England and Watson finds out the truth. The ending of A Game of Shadows sets that up already (the typewriter scene in the end), but we still didn't get to see Watson actually figuring things out and his reaction to Holmes' fakeout death. And we also need another big-name villain, since Moriarty is hard to top. Maybe Charles Milverton or Major Sholto, or make an adaptation of the Hound of the Baskervilles. There are many possibilities.
@jasonwrathorn92814 жыл бұрын
This was easily one of my favorite movies. I liked the first one, but this one knocked it out of the park! Holmes accepts his enemy framing the nature of their conflict. Fisher-man and fish. What I love about the scene in Moriarty's study is that The Professor's ultimate defeat began right there with that fundamental difference between the two characters. Holmes states the wedding is definitive and that the doctor will no longer be art of his investigations, but Moriarty see's Holme's attachment to his friend as a weakness, and threatens Watson and his wife's lives. If Moriarty have had let them `leave the board' likes Holme's wanted, it would have meant Watson and Mary wouldn't have been around to help Holmes stop the assassination and steal Moriarty's fortune. Moriarty wanting to hurt Holmes is what kept Holmes pieces on the board and won him the game.
@macmcleod11882 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree strongly. And it was a real "kick the dog" moment where Moriarty revealed his cruel nature. There was absolutely no reason for him to attack Watson and Mary other than to hurt homes personally. And threatening them really irritated Sherlock Holmes.

One of my absolute favorite scenes from this movie as well was the part with the good doctor Watson when he's trying to figure out which of the men is the one in disguise, at the same time that Holmes is having that chess game, and he deduces that he needs to cause a distraction to then read people's reactions. Of course he smashes the tray of champagne to the ground on purpose and it works. I thought that scene was ingenious, very smart movie all around.
