Villains, bad guys, antagonists. Hollywood has given us many of them, but only a few truly great ones. What is it that makes those few villains so great? In today's video, we'll examine the most important qualities behind some of the greatest villains in movie history in order to answer one question: how do you create the perfect villain?
Hopefully, after today, you will know exactly how to make your villain great. Should come in handy if you're a screenwriter or other filmmaker. Call it a video essay, call it a closer look, whatever. As long as you enjoy.

Christopher Nolan steps back into the director's chair for this sequel to Batman Begins, which finds the titular superhero coming face to face with his greatest nemesis -- the dreaded Joker. Christian Bale returns to the role of Batman, Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Rachel Dawes (played by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins), and Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger dons the ghoulishly gleeful Joker makeup previously worn by Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero. Just as it begins to appear as if Batman, Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) are making headway in their tireless battle against the criminal element, a maniacal, wisecracking fiend plunges the streets of Gotham City into complete chaos.

I'd go with Tai Lung. A guy whose supposed purpose (becoming the dragon warrior) has been drilled into him so thoroughly that he doesn't know what to do when that purpose was taken from him. He was raised believing that he was going to get the scroll, and he worked hard for it. For all intents and purposes, he probably deserved the scroll until Oogway said he didn't. Worse, the man who instilled that desire to be the dragon warrior to begin with, didn't even try to defend him. In that moment, his entire life had just been rendered worthless. Understandable why he would lash out and become as evil as he did. He just wanted the scroll he worked his entire life to earn. Motivation and goal becomes crystal clear.

That’s an interesting example of a completely non-threatening villain working well in the film. And he even made that order, although it unfortunately isn't quite as menacing as it could have been seeing as guards have cowered in fear from Shrek earlier on in the movie and he didn't even touch them. If Shrek was instead just a normal human hermit Fuckwads's... I mean Farquaad's order would have been more threatening. All that aside, for a kid I must say it is still fairly intimidating, even if Shrek is a big fearless Ogre.

I found Thanos so compelling of a villain because he was so different from his version in the comics. They changed the madman killing indiscriminately to appease lady death into a man burdened by his purpose and not necessarily angry at those that oppose him. He is shown to be unyielding in his belief, but that does not mean that his sacrifice does not hurt him extremely deeply.

A lot of comic-book villains don't have enough depth to really work in live-action movies. That's why I'm glad Marvel has given itself license to deviate from the comic-book versions of many of their villains. DC should take note. Simply being very strong and powerful is not enough to make a good movie villain.

I would also say that the Prequels also write him as a great character, it's just the dialogue that's a tad shabby. Vader was nothing more than the executioner, The Senate was the true villain.

There is only one reason why Darth Vader isn’t the best villain. It’s his backstory because we can feel for him and this makes him an antihero when he is trying to restore peace to the galaxy. Joker is the best villain because his backstory is multiple choice. He tells everyone different backstories to everyone to make them more terrified of him. It’s terrifying that we don’t even know if anything in the JOKER movie even happened and that he was in a cell making it all up from the beginning. We won’t know and we don’t want to because it makes him more terrifying.

On your first point about creating thematic opposition, I have to add that sometimes it's a good idea to let the villain resonate with the hero in such a way that makes the villain more than a mere polar opposite. Think of the yin/yang symbol: one half black, one half white, but each side has within it a circle with the opposite color as well, representing that hidden darkness within every hero and the hidden good within every villain. Luke Skywalker had that little bit of evil within him that almost made him give in to the Dark Side when he slashed Darth Vader's hand off - and Palpatine knew it. In Darth Vader, there was enough light within him that it made him turn on Palpatine at the very end. Palpatine, you may notice, had no such redemptive light within him. The Joker in the Dark Knight, like Palpatine, doesn't have a redemptive light; he is all chaos; he is pure, irredeemable evil. To me, that lack of redemption makes him more a force of nature, less human. You can think of him as a hurricane, or a wildfire - you can't reason with that. Joker can never be morally or philosophically tested by Batman because as a force of nature he can't be reasoned with - he just "wants to watch the world burn". The Joker is an abstraction, meant to embody an idea. Batman, on the other hand, IS tested by the Joker, because it takes everything within Batman's willpower not to kill the Joker. There's darkness within Batman that desperately wants to let the Joker win - that's the inner circle within the yin/yang. The Joker has no such inner circle. It makes Batman a more complex hero, but it also makes the Joker a less complex villain. Joker is more Palpatine, and less Darth Vader. Thanos, on the other hand, DOES have that core of goodness within him. When he sacrifices Gamora, that pain in his face is that little circle of light trying its damn hardest to beat the surrounding darkness - and failing to do so. It's a side that one feels you could almost reason with Thanos if you knew juuuuust the right buttons to push; the Joker has none of that. Thanos is a more complex character than the Joker; he's NOT an abstraction. The Joker is an abstraction; Thanos, like Darth Vader, is a complex person. Hannibal Lecter is also a complex person; he's this evil lunatic murderer/cannibal, but he's also refined, charming, and capable of connecting with other human beings. You can't pin Hannibal Lecter or Thanos down as being the embodiment of anything; they're too complex for that. Ironically, in Suicide Squad, the Joker IS given a redeemable quality, in that he is shown to be capable of self-sacrifice. I suspect the reason audiences disliked that is because we don't really WANT to see a human Joker. There's a REASON Nolan's Joker has no matches on DNA, fingerprints, dental, and even his clothes are custom. We WANT a mysterious Joker, the kind of Joker where we don't even really know what his real name is, the kind of Joker that has multiple origin stories up his sleeve. I think a lot of that is that the Dark Knight did such a great job establishing him as this living abstraction, and for Suicide Squad to suddenly give him humanity actually lessens his power as an abstract ideal and makes him just another mortal - which would be fine, if that mortal were INTERESTING. He may be a more fleshed out character, but in this case he's a less effective one for it. I don't think it's about abstraction vs. complexity though. I think it's whatever the story requires. The Dark Knight required an abstract Joker, because Batman is fighting an idea that he himself struggles with. In Infinity War, the Avengers are fighting a powerful being with an agenda, not some abstract inner struggle. This makes sense; Nolan's Batman series, like most of his films, are more about ideas. Marvel films are very well made popcorn blockbusters, not that interested in ideas per se. Hence, it makes sense for the protagonist of a Nolan film to fight an idea and for a Marvel film to fight a complex character. When these things are done poorly, you get neither - and that's why Suicide Squad's Joker sucked. He's neither the living embodiment of an idea, nor is he a fully fleshed out character. He's just...there. Incidentally, I think Star Wars is kinda cool because Luke gets both an abstract idea AND a complex character to square up against - best of both worlds. :)

People tend to forget that The Joker isn't the main villain in The Suicide Squad. The Enchantress is. He is a supporting character, who happens to be a villain. I don't see many people complaining about the lack of depth in Jabba the Hutt or Bellatrix Lestrange. Leto's Joker was seen in a couple of scenes where we got an idea of some things he does and how he's infatuated by Harley in a possessive sort of way. I believe the idea was having him in the sequel and developing him more. Moreover, his main opposition is Batman, not Harley or Deadshot, which explains why the antagonism here isn't in it's full potential.
@SodaMan18
@SodaMan18 3 жыл бұрын
@@2WinorNt I think the reason why Joaquin's Joker worked is because of the movie itself. The Dark Knight is an action movie, filled with explosion and shootings and etc... So it would be weird, if Joker showed an emotions. or if he had an emotional conflict. Joaquin's Joker on the other hand is a psychological movie, without any explosions or heist or any action stuff. So i think it also depends on, what genre the movie actually is. I hope my English isn't bad.

I'm simply saying that I have enough self awareness to know alot (not all) view me as a villain like I said, and the fact I too have those attributes, even though I think I'm the exception......which is how I should think as a villain lol!

The saddest thing about Malekit is that he could have been so good as a villain... You have a guy who wants to destroy the world and has, not only a compelling motivation, but one that can be called right. Not only that, he challenges the protagonist moral high ground with it. He wants to destroy the world because it was created by destroying his world and his race, and doing so restores his people. All because Odin and Asgard went full on genocide on them. Not only understandable like Thanos but at worst morally gray. And he could have spited it all on Thor face (granted you had a great actor in Ecclestone playing him) on how actually evil his god race was. Instead they got a generic villain that spoke only in a made up language

Exactly! The Dark World is basically Avengers: Endgame, only Thor is the bad guy. It's a movie set sometime after a certain someone caused a realm-wide catastrophe, and our plucky hero is trying to undo the damage and return the world to the way it was with the help of the vast power of the infinity stone... That's an incredibly compelling premise for a movie. Our heroes are actually the descendants of those they would have considered the "bad guys" had they shown up today. The only difference between Malekit and Thor is that more time has passed, so Thor's people have grown and they're mostly innocent descendants of the original sinners. At what point does trying to recover what was lost become the morally wrong thing to do? How much time has passed, how many innocents are allowed to suffer the changeback? The Dark World had the most potential as a story to really look into the MCU, and draw parallels with real-world situations. Or they could just have made a silly elf get stabby.

First, create a hero. Give them motivation, personality, and a goal. Now take that hero, and make them do horrible things to achieve said goal. Keep in mind that this character still believes that they are the hero. Then create another hero. Give them motivation, personality, and a goal. This time however, make them oppose the first character. Use this second character, to do as many right things as he or she could possibly do. Now you have a villain and a hero.

One villain I liked was Ultron from the What if series. Not because he was sympathetic like the Joker or Zuko, but solely because he was a threat. He just kept growing as a danger from getting a new more powerful body, to getting the infinity stones, to being able to travel universes (something even Thanos couldn't do) He brought the Watcher, a character we thought was untouchable to his knees. This is what every villain needs to be, a challenge, if you can't make them sympathetic or memorable, make them a threat.

You should rewatch the movies, he's not intimidating since pretty much every hero could kill him easily , and I don't see where he represents an opposition to our protagonists, well the fact that he was a soldier just like Captain America makes me think the opposite, but also not saying Zemo was a bad villain, in my opinion it works the way he is and makes him very special the fact that he made bleed those heroes and give them some personal evolution over the franchise despite being completely unable to take anyone of them down by himself.

Might be a personal opinion but those villians are the best. I'm tired of template Marvel villians who you KNOW for a fact are just going to get crushed by the protagonist through the power of believing in yourself and teamwork. Villians who achieve at least a partial victory show that they are indeed a threat enough to justify the main character struggling against them.
@elido6199
@elido6199 2 жыл бұрын
IMO that would make writer's jobs a whole lot easier if they just let the villain win. Also, a villain who doesn't even "partially win" is not a villain. I'd think they have to damage the protagonist in SOME way in order to qualify, and even then they can still lose.

I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. @Alex The Awsome If he had a power of an Infinity Gauntlet, why didn't he just DOUBLE the amount of resources or teach people (and other living things that consume those resources) to consume them in the right way, or (and that is the better option) even to recreate, enlarge and enhance the amount of those resources? But no, he just had to wipe out half of the universe JUST to be a villain. Just because those lazy writers wanted him to be a villain, because in shitty movies like Marvel's, there are no heroes without villains. So, they are "heroes", as long as there are those villains, cuz without them they're not much of a heroes, not even a little, not even at all. Their actions are stupid, they can't reach an agreement, they can't organize themselves to stick to the plan properly, they make the dumbest decisions while trying to protect the universe from "the greatest threat". All they needed to do, during the battle on Titan is open up a portal, cut off Thanos' hand by closing that portal (like they did during the attack on Sanctum Sanctorum), take the gauntlet off of the ripped hand and throw it into another portal so that Thanos could never reach it, kill Thanos and then destroy the gauntlet. Nothing impossible, pretty simple and obvious decision to us as a viewers. And it definitely leads to the victory. But ok, IF NOT, it SHOULD be mentioned, to us as a viewers that this particular variant is not an option and describe WHY NOT. That's how the "movie language" works. None of this was done, Doc just said that there is only one option. Because it's easy to write and you don't have to explain anything. That's what I call lazy writing. To you as an 8 y.o. kid this might seem a litte too complex, but to me as an adult it is obvious. And pretty much every Marvel movie contains those illogical moments. They are too frequent to mention them all. This is why the whole Infinity War movies are the most overrated and dumb products in the history of cinema.

Great analysis. Since you're asking for villains, I'll mention a fav of mine, Yzma from the Emperor's New Groove. It's not quite Batman vs Joker, but she works with the protagonist Kuzco in different ways. Basically, Kuzco is no less villainous than Yzma, and turns her into his adversary, so she can set the story in motion. They're both power-hungry with no regard for their people, and even have/gain a burly sidekick they view as utterly inferior. It's largely their pride, ambition and greed that move the story forward. Kuzco begins the story by creating his own antagonist for himself, taking Yzma's power away. As he learns from his mistakes and sees Pacha as an equal, he allows the story to end as well. So, without Yzma in his life, Kuzco would've remained a tyrant, causing suffering to others and never being quite happy himself. Much-needed antagonist right there. They're both villainous for little reason too. Kuzco is a spoiled brat. Yzma has a deleted song that gives a tad more insight to her insecurities and her taste for thrones, but even with that in kind, she's kiiinda just pure evil. Kuzco more than makes up for the dullness of his backstory by developing as a character. But Yzma is wicked throughout. As Kuzco becomes 'good' her wickedness shines brighter yet. She's now got the spotlight. And it's because of all the above that she's more than just a fun obstacle. She mirrors then contrasts the protagonist perfectly, and creates the conditions for him to grow thanks to her ingenuity and because of his own hubris. Just some thoughts. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Great analysis since you replied to someone I'll reply to you. Favourite villain: it' difficult to fully say but there's one villain who is the ultimate asswhole which perfectly describes their video game counterpart and that is Lance of the Elite 4 (pokemon adventures manga, yellow chapter). Lance is extremely intelligent and he isn't even the brains of the team, able to outwit Giovanni (A powerful crime boss) with bubbles! (Not something you hear everyday) and he makes sure the enemy never gets a proper advantage on him like when Mewtwo (a genticly made creature with almost godlike abilities) tried stopping him from releasing his remaining pokemon, Mewtwo did do that but they were actually watching the whole battle. Lance's pokemon can control the weather and has on his team of pokemon: Dragonite, Areodactyl, Dragonair X4. His goal is to perform total genocide upon humanity, because they hurt pokemon. Sadly he was tossed aside by a lava surfing girl called yellow because one of her pokemon, Butterfree had string which lead itself to three of the most powerful pokemon trainers whose pokemon sent their power up the string to crush Lance... What the fuck! Anyways in short Lance is ruthless and smart while insane in the head

Yzma is also, in many ways, Kuzco's opposite. She's ambitious where he's complacent. Industrious where he's lazy. She spent her whole life working to seize power, while he had power handed to him on a silver platter at birth. Kuzco is a tyrant, yes, but he's a tyrant that is an extension of the worst aspects of hereditary monarchical rule. Yzma resents the monarchical power structure, while simultaneously believing herself more deserving of it, obtained by any means necessary. Kuzco is the evil that inflicts itself from the top down. Yzma is the evil that inflicts itself from the ground up.
@PhantomV13
@PhantomV13 5 жыл бұрын
@@Bluecho4 Great notes. Now that you mention it, Kuzco indeed doesn't have ambition, at least not exactly. Wanting to build that summer home is more of the same, just another example of the power he's used to, so, complacent indeed. Perhaps his disinterest in finding a bride highlights he's afraid and/or bored of change, as well as his immaturity. Which adds more contrast between him and Yzma, who desires and drives that change. And as far as the people are concerned, the change in leadership is literally a new coat of paint.

The funny thing with having ronan the accuser in as forgettable in the 'motivations' section is we do know ronan's motivations. It's just because they tell, rather than show, that they become forgotten- his first lines tell us that he wants to destroy xandar because the last three generations of his family were killed by xandarians, in a war that has recently ended with a peace treaty. What the film needed to make him a better villain was a scene showing some of that connection, and showing he is motivated by revenge for something very real that happened to his character. I'm not sure that would actually have fit the tone of the film though, so maybe letting him be forgettable was the right way to go.

He’s personal by constantly reflecting on his past and talking about how much he loves his home city. He’s sure as hell menacing- he’s one of the few characters who can hold his own against Daredevil. He’s clearly motivated by both a love for Vanessa and this warped idea that he can fix his city by controlling it through force. And he’s a clear thematic opposite to Matt. Matt won’t ever kill to achieve his goals, Fisk uses murder to solve everything. Matt wears black and hides in the shadows, Fisk wears a white suit and makes himself as public as possible. The violent persona is Matt’s alter-ego whereas it’s Fisk’s true self. Matt represents justice at any cost while Fisk represents the perversion of justice in every way. Kingpin is the perfect villain.

@@andyparker5688, good thing that it's definitely not true, since Heath Ledger's Joker is undoubtedly a better character. In large part to his complex motivation that's about proving the irrelevancy of moral values, his fearlessness (he was ready to die for his deed on many occasions), and his threatening presence (The "Look at me!" scene is definitely scarier than anything in the MCU). The idea of suggesting that an MCU villain is even a good character in general sounds funny to me.

Well, you're gonna have to learn the easy way that not everyone's gonna agree with what you said. They would agree with how you describe the Joker but not with your point of view on MCU or on Thanos. Besides, a point about Joker is to be noted that his backstory and means of motivation in the plot are barely even explored, when most of the emphasis goes to his mannerisms only instead, and that's why I don't consider him the better character, despite being a legendary one. Can't ignore that even with Heath's phenomenal acting. About his fearlessness, we can't forget that Thanos was also ready to lose everything to achieve his goal and so he did. About how you described the "look at me" scene, I think I got your logic. "If the villain screams loudly or behaves like a madman, then he's definitely scarier." *.....and I thought my jokes were bad.* But then again, Thanos really may not be the scary kinda villain, since he shows sanity, emotion and respect to considerable extent as well. @@andyparker5688, “Hey, wait a minute. I just remembered you through your channel name and the way you're bashing MCU.” Give yourself a cookie, then. You deserved it, for your observancy. “I've seen you in a lot of comment sections, displaying your unjustified attitude of a typical Marvel hater” Well, I don’t think you’ve actually seen me a lot. Or, I don’t think you actually payed any attention to what I was saying. Because none of the things I was saying were unjustified. Also, calling me a Marvel hater is one of the most preposterous things on earth, considering that, if you actually bothered to read my comments, you’d see that I’m a longtime fan of the Marvel comics. Which is something I always prefix in my comments. I’d never hate Marvel; I love Marvel. I don’t like the MCU, on the other hand. But the MCU isn’t Marvel. The MCU is an extension of Marvel. And I have my personal reasons for disliking it. “and (correct me if I'm wrong or maybe not, since you ain't gonna agree with me) a DC fanboy.” A DC fanboy whose favorite superhero is Iron Man, favorite supervillain is Mandarin, favorite superhero cartoons are X-Men TAS, Spider-Man TAS, and X-Men Evolution, and favorite comic book storylines of all time are Spider-Man: Vibes and Iron Man: Vengeance in Vietnam. “About your last sentence, I wouldn't be surprised if you claimed Steppenwolf to be a good character.” Depends on what Steppenwolf you’re referring to. Unless you don’t know, Steppenwolf existed before that Justice League movie, and he had incarnations in comics and cartoons. Many of them were quite good. “I myself generally wouldn't defend the subject of MCU villains but if you're not gonna agree with Loki, Vulture, Killmonger and Thanos being good characters, THAT'S JUST YOUR OPINION.” And if I did agree, it would stop being my opinion? It’s kind of the same thing - if I agree or don’t agree with you. But no, I don’t find them good. Especially Loki and Killmonger. Loki is just a mess of a character. The MCU changes his motivation and characterization in every movie. Killmonger was lame. “Well, you're gonna have to learn the easy way that not everyone's gonna agree with what you said.” Thanks for pointing that out for me. Otherwise, I wouldn’t know. “They would agree with how you describe the Joker but not with your point of view on MCU or on Thanos.” Some would. You don’t speak on behalf of every conscious person in this world, do you? “Besides, a point about Joker is to be noted that his backstory and means of motivation in the plot are barely even explored,” You don’t need a backstory in order to make a villain good and compelling. Norman Bates, Hannibal, Buffalo Bill, and Michael Myers originally did not have backstories. The villains stood on their own and were interesting without us knowing where they came from. One can argue that most of these characters were ruined in later movies that added their backstory. You can also add Anton from No Country For Old Men to that list as well. “Can't ignore that even with Heath's phenomenal acting.” So, by your logic, Thanos is a better character than Hannibal from Silence of the Lambs and Anton from No Country For Old Men because Thanos has a backstory? “About his fearlessness, we can't forget that Thanos was also ready to lose everything to achieve his goal and so he did.” Thanos was an all-powerful alien with an almighty weapon in his hands that could alter reality and an army to back him up. Joker was just a lunatic who could’ve been killed with one bullet. I’m sorry, but in this case, Joker had more to fear than Thanos. “I think I got your logic. "If the villain screams loudly or behaves like a madman, then he's definitely scarier." If that villain is a nihilistic psychopath who screams that right before slaughtering an innocent man in a slaughterhouse, then yeah, it is scary. If he is some washed out douchebag with weird fire powers, that screams like a b*tch right before getting killed like a pathetic piece of sh*t by Gwyneth Peltrow in yoga pants, then no, he’s not scary. “.....and I thought my jokes were bad.” That is exactly what I say to myself every time when I see another unfunny gag in another unfunny MCU movie. Sometimes, I just stop watching the movie because of that. I remember I was in a theater, watching Vol. 2., and then the characters started arguing about who has bigger turds, and I just said “F*ck it!” and I left the theater for good. The good thing was that I got the ticket for free from one of my pals who couldn’t attend the screening, so I didn’t pay my own money for that crap, at least. “But then again, Thanos really may not be the scary kinda villain, since he shows sanity, emotion and respect to considerable extent as well. He's rather the powerful and compelling type.” He is rather an inconsistent character who is shown to get pleasure from hurting people (smiles when he chokes Loki), but then he all the suddenly is shown as a sensitive soy boy. But maybe Thanos has ADHD, so who knows. “You calling Infinity War a stupid purple movie with stupid CGI (or triggered about what happened with Suicide Squad and Justice League)?” That is some really out-of-place conclusion you made there, pal. “What's the guarantee that The Dark Knight would have been as highly rated as it is if Heath hadn't died?” The fact that it would still be the same movie. Because, the reason why The Dark Knight is the best superhero movie of all time, is because of its intricate storytelling, innovative usage of plot points, and compelling characters. You don’t need Heath Ledger’s death to see it. If you people believe that The Dark Knight required Heath Ledger’s death in order to hype up its quality and gain its popularity, you really are missing one thing: if that’s how you make The Dark Knight good, then why movies like The Avengers and The Avengers Infinity War are what they are? Those movies certainly aren’t better written, let alone better acted than The Dark Knight. So how can they gain as much amount of recognition without the need of one of its cast members dying and thus hyping up the release of the movie? Yes, that totally makes sense.

I find it interesting that Hanible is spoken of as the villain of ‘silence of the lambs’ when he really is not. In many ways he helps the protagonist. He seems to even have more in common with an antihero, doing horrific things due to some brutal moral code. Similar to John Doe of Seven, however in ‘silence’ specifically, he isn’t shown to be the villain is is convicted of being. He may be a villainous vigilante, however he has a code and abides by it. The Lord Humungus from Road Warrior/Mad Max 2 Opposite of the protagonist: He is surrounded by an army while Max is a loner. Nearly naked while Max is covered in leather armor. Physically huge and strong while Max is small and quick. They have similarities too in both are pursuing fuel to continue to scavenge the wasteland. Both reject what's left of the civilized world but have opposite approaches (Max avoids it, Humungus destroys it). Both have a specialized, iconic weapon (scoped revolver for Lord Humungus, sawed-off double-barreled shotty for Max). Both also have a specialized, super-charged vehicle. Arguably both have a pet animal/sidekick (Dog for Max, Wez for Humungus, Wez is a human but acts animalistic at times with his shrieks and ferocity and athleticism, he is even chained by the neck and released to attack at one point). He has an outward and clearly defined motivation (obtain the fuel to feed his mechanized army). He has a history and perhaps hidden, personal motivation revealed when he subdues Wez and reveals "we have all lost someone we love... you will have your revenge". Revenge being inflicting pain on others because of his own pain/rage at his loss. His mask, hoarse raspy voice and hair loss also hint at painful injuries and loss in his past. He is "a physical incarnation of intimidation and menace" simply from his size, physique and willingness to be nearly naked in the hot desert sun. As well as his masked face. He is able to physically subdue the most ferocious of his warriors Wez when Wez goes berserk. Clearly the alpha of these savage, ruthless people. He is also menacing in his speech. He is charismatic and clearly intelligent and is attempting to sow doubt and discord within the civilized folk to weaken their defenses "just walk away and I'll grant your lives" while still keeping himself as the giver/taker of life. His first appearance he doesn't even attack. He simply attempts to persuade and then drives away leaving the doubt to fester, which is even more menacing than if he was shooting guns and throwing molotovs. He promises safety for any that leave the compound yet from his brief words with Wez "we do it my way, you will have your revenge" it is clear he has no intention of keeping that promise. And when he is thwarted and Max returns with the semitruck he strips away his "reasonable" mask and launches into a terrifying mountaintop tirade promising absolute annihilation of all one way or another "Nobody gets out of here alive".

Thematic Opposition Strong Clear Motivation Menace Incarnated Personal Evil Even though its your opinion. Making a perfect villain somtimes doesnt need all 4. Sometimes just one or just two of what you listed. Menacing Incarnated is the greatest characteristics for any villain. If you mold around that one trait, you dont need the other 3 to make the "Perfect" villain. You can make a great villain but in the end key factors must be accounted: - Build up - Development - Execution Menace Incarnated + Personal Evil go hand in hand very well. The best villain that resembles that is "Johan" from the anime "Monster". His motives are never clear because it switches and his opposition poses no threat. What he had going for him was the 3 points mentioned above with the traits I acknowledged. So yeah, having motivation to make a great villain is not a staple and most villains that have no clear motive are poorly done due to some creative circumstances.

One thing I’d like to bring up is that, while thematic and motivational opposition is good, it’s also really interesting when character motivations are the same. That way, they can mirror each other, but the juxtaposition of their methods of end goals compels the audience.

With the thematic opposite thing, another really cool thing you can do is make both hero and villain believe in one aspect of their theme, but apply it in completely different directions. For example, in Dredd, both the hero and the villain hate the twisted shadow that humanity has become, but the villain uses that hate to engage in sadistic activities such as shooting up three floors' worth of civilians, and the hero instead harnesses his hate of humanity's fate to deal justice and to try to make the world a better place. So, the hero and villain's perception of the theme is near-identical, but their reactions to the theme are what make them conflict.

I think this analysis could apply completely to protagonists as well.

Great villains are usually a form of "Shadow-self" for the hero. They are often even pursuing the same goal, but the villain does so in ways that are are antithetical to the hero. For instance, in The Matrix both Neo and Agent Smith are trying to get free of their prisons. In Spiderman Homecoming both Peter Parker Adrian Toomes want to rise above their low status origins. As you mentioned in The Dark Knight, both Batman and The Joker want to prove what lies in the heart of man, first in terms of the wider and city of Gotham and finally in terms of Harvey Dent. That's another example of things getting "personal" in the final act.

Not a movie, but T-Bag from Prison Break is a pretty outstanding villain with a great performing actor to the point where people can't seperate the character from the actor anymore.

What about Neil from Heat (1995)? He wasn’t really a villain, but he was a bad guy who the audience felt for

I agree entirely. It seems like a deliberate omission, like if he included Darth Vader, that would have taken over the whole discussion.

Were you even listening when Filmento said that villains not being discussed aren't necessarily bad? Vader is both menacing and personal to Luke, but Hannibal Lecter was a personal example for him and John Doe goes deeper on a personal level.

@@SungFu Yes, I was listening. Were you reading when I said he probably deliberately did not use Darth Vader, because when you include him, it ends up taking over the entire discussion? I mean there's 7 movies with the asthmatic man in black (prequels, original trilogy, and Rogue One). Darth Vader is too badass to share a video with the chaotic evil likes of the Joker! Darth Vader gets his own video, his own trailer, his own limo, eats before all the other SAG members, or he just won't show up in the youtube video (and might force choke somebody at random).

@@stuartwashington2658 I was, but I chose to ignore your point due to the fact that wasn't the one I was addressing. And since you want to bring your opinion to my attention, I'll give you mine: Darth Vader is not that good of a villain. His presentation is excellent and he comes off as a very menacing character, but that's about it. He's a stale, boring character, and is a puppet to Palpatine. He has no clear motivations after his defeat at Mustafar, and was a whiny brat before that. His only importance to the original trilogy besides being another big bad like Boba Fett or Palpatine was the fact that he was Luke's father, which is only shown through his actions when he serves as an Ex Machina by betraying Palpatine, who he has loyally served for years. Darth Vader was shoehorned in so Luke had some way of proving his incorrigibility.

Stuart Washington jesus you are so bias. Vader isn’t that good to take up a whole video. Any other villain in this video is a much better villain.

I love using videos like this one to look over my own personal interests and see why I like certain things. For example, my favorite 3D Disney movie is Zootopia (spoilers ahead), for pretty much every reason *except* Bellweather. But, upon using videos like this one to analyze why it's so frustrating to me, it's because she has the potential to be one of the better Disney villains (I can't really say best with characters like Syndrome and Frollo to compare to). She's a prey animal biased against the predators in the same way that the majority of prey are, only to have those biases justified by working for Mayor Lionheart, who basically abuses her with the power he holds over her. Not only that, but he also works toward equality between predators and prey, something that directly conflicts with Bellweather's beliefs after being taken advantage of for so long. Then, she manages to take the most determined, innocent prey animal on the entire police force and get her to be the face of a *race war*. I cannot overstate how insane of a premise that is for a Disney movie, given their history of racist characters and production decisions. It's such a powerful scene in every way, tearing apart Nick and Judy's friendship with neither side feeling like they're in the wrong, and with Judy giving in to implicit biases that she was unaware she even had (despite them being the reason she met Nick in the first place). Bellweather is such an amazing concept for a villain to me not just because of the scale and threat of her actions, but because she manages to take the most hopeful protagonist, one that everyone in the movies sees as innocent and harmless, and makes it so Judy kickstarts the race war with a few improvised comments for the news. If she had been better established, maybe the audience sees she's a threat early on without the protagonists being aware (like she walks away from Lionheart after being abused and slips into a room with pictures of predators crossed off and a plotting look on her face), then I feel like she could've been a near-perfect villain. The concept is horrifying, the payoff outside of Bellweather herself is fantastically dreadful, but... instead she's a constantly happy-go-lucky character that's completely free of biases until she needs to have them, despite having ample opportunity to justify said biases in her interactions with Lionheart. If she had either been established as a villain early on, or had openly resented her position (maybe not even in a malicious way, maybe she just groans at Lionheart's comments and looks worn down), I feel like that would've pushed Zootopia to be close to masterpiece status.

I know, right? The biggest problem with Bellweather is that she comes out of nowhere. Zero buildup, and she just pulls a complete 180 in personality when revealed. It’s the same reason why Hans and Callaghan are such terrible villains.
