Yup. plus, this series was flawed, it should have been a trilogy with another villain as #2, building up to moriarty vs sherlock in #3. This was premature, and frankly movie 3 will be a letdown.

One of the most criminally overlooked films ever. The twists and turns were so fun, and Jared Harris absolutely perfectly nailed his performance of Moriarty. The action sequences were astounding (the woods chase has yet to be topped by anything else I've seen), and the Law/RDJ chemistry was on fire. The movie deserved rave reviews and $1bil+ at the box office!

What I like is that even though Moriarty still loses at the game and the plot, he still technically wins the all around competition. His plan wasn't to cause a war to happen, his plan was to make the war happen sooner. War was inevitable, he just wanted to profit from it and decided to just nudge it along faster so he could start making money sooner.

Never has there been a bigger flex of the intelligence of fictional characters than this.
@MostlyPennyCat
@MostlyPennyCat 2 ай бұрын
Oh no, this isn't the flex. The _flex_ is that this is a slight variation on a famous real grandmaster match in 1966 _and_ that the game they play describes the events that occur in the room next door and with lestrade in London. That is the writers flex. They put a scene for ultimate chess nerds in their Hollywood summer blockbuster action adventure.

To show off a bit - their moves in the chess match mirror Holmes' explanation of how he's defeated Moriarty. It's easier to follow if you look up one of the many analysis vids or articles on it that show the moves. Holmes' initial check is from the Rook, which Moriarty defends by moving his Bishop to block, and Holmes subsequently captures it with his own Bishop. From there the two make other moves while the Rook is still there, waiting to check the King once the way is clear, just as Holmes never takes his eye off Moriarty. Eventually Moriarty moves his Queen, his most powerful piece, into position to potentially trap the King and checkmate Holmes. But in doing so, he leaves his own King vulnerable to a threat he overlooked; Holmes simply moves his Bishop out of the way, allowing the Rook to check the King again, but this time there's no pieces nearby that can intervene, and the two Bishops now cover any movements the King could make to move out of the Rook's way. The King is trapped. A "discover check" is when the piece moved that turn doesn't initiate the check, but rather it moves out of the way allowing another piece to check the King. In this case, Holmes moves his Bishop out of the way, just as he got Mary out of the way. If Moriarty hadn't been so aggressive with his Queen and recognized what Holmes was planning, he might have been able to move it into position to fend off the Bishops. But in his arrogance, assured that his King was safe from the Rook - assured that he was safe from Holmes - he dove in to make what he assumed was a game-ending move, ignoring what was going on back in London. And that was when Holmes revealed he had already set up his winning move several turns ago, with pieces Moriarty wasn't paying attention to anymore and was no longer in a position to move against. Thus the Rook checkmates the King with help from the two Bishops to cover its escapes - Holmes defeats Moriarty with the help of Mary and Lestrade working behind the scenes to destroy his finances. Alternatively, you could say the Rook represents Watson, who is actually in the ballroom acting to thwart Moriarty's scheme, while the King, Holmes, sits on the sidelines out of the way, bait to distract Moriarty while its allies do the work.

There’s a chance in my opinion that Moriarty saw that this was leading to a check mate but he was trying to intimidate Sherlock into trying to show that Sherlock had nothing on him but Sherlock kept proving that he had it all figured out thus that intimidation wasn’t effective, thus why, even though Moriarty is a super genius like Sherlock, he underestimated Sherlock’s abilities not in the game but symbolised by the game.

Moriarty spends the whole movie underestimating Holmes. He's convinced that, as smart as Holmes is, he's smarter, and has more resources to command, so his victory is assured. Yet Holmes reminds him who the real genius is.

I never realized until today that this scene also explained how Watson would know where to find him He knew the best way to get the notebook would to be close, and that it would likely be through a great amount of torture, based off Moriarty’s personality and the fact that they’d probably also use the same room with other patients, specifically those with surgical procedures like facial reconstruction. So he always had planned on getting in close, figured the best way to do so is to have Moriarty halve his fun with him, knew that they’d likely use the same room Renee (sorry i forgot how to spell his name) was in since it might get messy, and have his plan’s solidified knowing that this indeed the place, it being close to all the areas of Europe Moriarty has direct knowledge influence in. I honestly love a movie and show that had me coming back and picking up even more detail’s hidden in the project, especially with these movies, Guy Ritchie and Sherlock Holmes movies and shows in general, etc.
