i never realized how good H.Marion Crawford was in this part - great sense of humor and reactions to his friend, Holmes, are thoroughly the way a very good guy friend would behave - and with Holmes a lot of it is good-natured, plain old frustration. Ronald Howard, of course, is just wonderful as usual. the most light-hearted Holmes ever . This was really good series :}

I remember being charmed by Ronald Howard as Holmes, and giving Marion H. Crawford a thumbs up as Watson; as intense as Basil Rathbone was, there was something about his portrayal that had me on my toes in a nervous way, while Nigel Bruce really got on my nerves, although not as bad as Lestrade.

Someone may have mentioned it.....Ronald Howard is the son of actor Leslie Howard who played Ashley Wilkes in Gone With the Wind. Leslie's plane was shot down by the Germans over the Bay of Biscay in 1943. It is rumoured that they thought Churchill was on the flight [but he changed it to the following day due to a premonition]. Churchill expressed sorrow that his flight info may have cost Leslie [and others] their lives.

Watson is portrayed rather nicely. H Marion Crawford looks the part too - handsome, thickset, lovely moustache, lion-hearted and absolutely loyal to Holmes! The stories themselves are very simple, not a patch on Sir Arthur's stories - but then NO Sherlock Holmes adaptations match the Master Storyteller's skills! Sadly, not much of a role for Mrs. Hudson in this series... I love Granada TV's remakes - the episodes are almost word-for-word reproduction of the short and long stories. Jeremy Brett as Holmes and both David Burke as well as Edward Hardwicke - as Dr. Watson - and Rosalie Williams as Mrs. Hudson - are all outstanding!

Borley Nun. Well to be fair this show is or rather was of the era of the 50s. Fresh out of world war 2, There was little to no source of entertainment other than stage plays and goofing out in the wild. There wasn't any Discovery channel to show us about Animal welfare and also knowledge about different species.Whem Circus came to existence including various wild and domestic animals, people found it amazing and curious to know more about them. And it wasn't an easy job to tame wild animals or an Elephant to showcase them to the public in proper way. So they had to be cruel to them as they were considered as less superior species than us. Again I'd say the year was 1955. Today at 2019 you can easily say that it is cruelty, cuz times and technology have changed and now we are all about protecting them as we should. We evolve our minds each and every day you must realize that. What's alright for today might be cruelty 50 years later.

I've never seen Watson as a Buffoon. I've listened to the stories and there doesn't seem to be any place to suggest he would be anything less than a professional. Holmes had a unique intellect but that hardly made Watson an idiot. Holmes would hardly have associated with someone he couldn't have a decent conversation with. I'm not crazy about the casting of Watson but he could hold his own.

I'm not yet sure how I feel about this particular Holmes portrayal, but nevertheless thank you for posting this! It'll be fun to watch yet another Sherlock series!

Good shit Sherlock - consistently good shit - especially the train travelling at the astonishing speed of 30 miles per hour.except when it was travelling at the breakneck speed of 5 miles per hour round up hill.

I’ll bet the father was more tender-hearted than he let on and had them taken care of - or let go, mice can take care of themselves.

Watching tigers and lions in cages and elephants being tortured makes one really angry. But I guess the sensibilities were different then.

I really like this Watson rather than the bumbling Indian other series. And Holmes is brilliant as usual.🙂

Watson is actually a partner to Holmes in this series unlike the portrayal as given in the films starring Basil Rathbone.

Criminals where ever so obliging in them days. The storyline was very similar to Stevensons Kidnapped. Uncle has nephew taken so he can inherit the cash etc etc.
