While many fife and drum tunes signaled commands on the battlefield, others were more celebratory in nature. “Sherman’s March” began as a poem by Samuel Beyers, a prisoner in a confederate camp. The poem was put to music by a fellow prisoner and then made its way north where it gained popularity as the momentum shifted during the Civil War. It was said that General William T. Sherman strongly disliked hearing the tune. Staff Sgts. Troy Paolantonio and Derek Stults re-enacted the celebration of the Union on the Army Field Band’s “March Kings” livestream on April 17, 2020.

There are some striking commonalities, music-theory wise, with the song "Burning Bridges" from the movie "Kelly's Heroes." I wonder if the composer of the soundtrack took inspiration from this, seeing how it is a war movie.

What Sherman did may seem cruel, but it was all part of winning the war quickly. The Confederacy would have had to do the same to win if they had the chance.

I read the Constitution of the United States of America and it states that we're not supposed to have a standing military during peacetime that means the military has to be disbanded under the Constitution of the United States of America that's where the civilian militia comes in people like if they were working on a newspaper or windmill restaurant they would come together during the daytime if something happened

Where in the US Constitution does it forbid a standing army? And, any time America has tried to rely on the militia, it has ultimately had to turn to a standing army. It's because of a standing army--the Continentals--that the rebelling colonies became the United States. It's because of a standing army that the US gained victory in the Indian wars of the Old Northwest. The standing army helped the fledgling US survive the War of 1812 intact. Militias had a short-term, local role but, by that very nature, could not and did not take the field for the extended periods necessary to win wars.

@@martialmusic I appreciate your comment. However, I was born and raised in NYC. Have a BA & MA in History from NYU. Perhaps you might read some American History texts . Might put your assumptions in perspective. Just an addition... I was in the US Army during the Korean "Conflict". Amen!

tony salvatore ok 😊 well you said Sherman was not an officer and a gentleman. He was an officer. As for gentleman? I have never dined with him. And as for not being nice at war, he is famous for saying “war is all hell”.
