This is one of the best things I’ve ever seen on KZbin! Thanks for posting this! I grew up in the Houston area in the 80s. This reporter blowing in the wind was the talk of the town. I remember working at Pappasito’s Cantina in 1989, and we waiters used to imitate her blowing in the wind, screaming over gales “THIS IS SHERN MIN CHOWWW!!!!” So funny.

I was Shern-Min's photog that day- I've covered a combination of 20 hurricanes and tropical storms in my career including Andrew and Hugo -and at 6'6" 260lbs Chantal was the only storm where the storms wind knocked me to the ground. It was more of a gust that knocked me down- sustained winds were more like 80-85 on the video here then a brief gust caught me off balance with the camera still attached to the tripod. Chantal was compact but still no pushover very close to the eye. I want to say it was 95mph briefly at its strongest point at landfall. Thanks for the reply.

Well I imagine so you were there at High Island at the point of landfall.

I remember this, seeing poor Shern-Min Chow looking like she was about to get carried away by those winds. I lived in Dickinson at the time and I was 9, and my memory of Chantal there was a lot of rain, but we were okay on winds, don’t remember losing power. Hurricane Jerry a few months later was the opposite: heavy winds and not as much rain.

I need to track down the article - but I remember Ken Hoffman recapping the coverage the stations did for this storm in the Houston Post. I recall his hit on KHOU's coverage describing their reporter's use of towels ("ooh towels!") to capture the ferocity of the wind, but not sure if he mentioned Shern Min Chow's work on 13. I'd be amazed if it didn't get a passing mention.

Hard to believe that Sher-Min Chow, as small as she is at (maybe) 100 lbs or less then, was able to survive gale force winds and almost getting blown into the Gulf of Mexico.

I remember this hurricane when I was 11, it wasn't that bad. We didn't get hurricane forced winds in Alief.
