Mine have already died. Zone 10a Southwest Florida. They don’t like heat! After Ian I have found that natives are what does the best. They come back and can take a beating. Trying to fill my massive Ian holes in my garden with natives. I’m in the tropics so it’s all beautiful.

Natives are great and I love the tropicals! Supertunia in my experience (I live in south Georgia so not only very hot but very humid) can take the heat love it and full sun all day. Other petunias not so much. Supertunias are only made by Proven Winners. They will always come in a container or with a tag that says proven winners.

I’m a northern gardener and Proven winners are everywhere. I do volunteer gardens for a cemetery, which btw is my favorite garden. The people who visit their loved ones graves are truly wonderful. Anyway, I may try these as a landscaping flower because big blocks of color are my favorites for public places. Thanks Bubblegum sounds like a cheerful flower 🌸.

I bought my Bubble gum at a lovely Amish nursery in Clarita OK. and they have been amazing. Very little deadheading and very hardy in the heat. Mine get sun from sun up til about 1:30 - 2:00 and coverage is about 30" plus. I will be adding more containers for next year and more colors. Cost was $3.99 for 4" pots.

I love supertunias; they are a better version of petunias because I DESPISE deadheading petunias. I have the same trouble finding the supertunias that you have. One year I found Bordeaux and Honey at my nearby Lowe's, but not in the past couple of years. It takes at least 3 years for those lovely plants we see the big KZbin gardeners planting to spread out to the local hinterlands. Garden centers don't want to spend money for expensive plants they are not sure will sell great! I think you are onto something about the northern plant companies spreading south. The gorgeous plants grown in western Michigan, southeast Michigan, and New Hampshire have challenges with our hot humid summers. Proven Winners plants are beautiful! They were bred for northern conditions. I lived in Michigan, in the areas where the big plant growers are located. Summers are great there. Days can be hot, but nights cool off. Great for hydrangeas that pink up according to temperature. We don't have growing seasons like Mackinac Island, MI. I am going to try more Southern Living Plant Collection plants this year. They have more heat tolerance. My southeastern, coastal NC, zone 8a has WAY more trouble with heat than cold. I do have to say I am a sucker for the beautiful colors of Proven Winners plants.

I came across a great selection of Proven Winners Supertunias last week at a local nursery (Plants for all Seasons) here in the Cypress/Houston area. I almost bought some bubblegum and jazzberry ones, but remembered how they fried last year in our blazing hot summer, and passed them up. I came across some pink and red achillea (yarrow) that I had been looking for and bought those instead in hopes of using them in my cut flower arrangements. Since they are a perennial, I didn't feel guilty about the money spent on them. Good video with lots of helpful information.

I love supertunias, they last all all season with minimal effort. I live in a hot dry climate and they bloom all summer even when It gets into the 100's. My biggest issue is the $$ of them. They are so expensive for a single plant. I was spending a couple hundred a year on them but started saving plants over winter and propage my own now. I just let a tray of them limp along all winter. In Janueary i start feeding them and taking cutting. They are extremely easy to propagate from cuttings.

I mix Bubblegum with Jazzberry and it looks gorgeous. This year I added two new Supertunia's, the Saffron Finch which also is a heavy bloomer. I also tried this year, the Hoopla. Now the Hoopla started off slow, and then suddenly took off. It just may be the area where I have it planted, but it's doing great right now. I'm in Texas and it's been 100° lately so I've really had to keep on top of the watering. Yes, they need a lot of water and I find that if I skip one day they start shriveling but I can usually pull them back to life, if I miss two days of watering, they won't come back, so water is very important and I have them in an area with tons of sun, but partial shade mid-afternoon.

I agree they are much more expensive in the south. Here in NCz8a I order from proven winners direct and orders over $45 are free delivery; they usually have a good selection. Agree they are worth it and I don’t fertilize mine like Garden Answer, Gardening with Creekside and some other big you tubers and they bloom great. Mine usually last into September and I water everything by hand, no self watering pots or drip irrigation. Your yard is beautiful.

Great video. I have purchased online and you get free shipping if you spend enough. MAJOR CON: They attract "bud worm" (green caterpillars) and you need to get ahead of them or you'll have NO blooms left. You'll know if you have them because you start to see holes in your blooms and little black dots (excrement) on the leaves. I use BT and spray them. Other than that, they are beautiful!!

I can totally handle a video on just supertunias. I’m a bit south of you in Round Rock, TX (zone 8b). I have several (5) local nurseries that carry PW and I’m happy to say over the last 5 years each has slowly increased the PW inventory. They still don’t have tons, but the selection is getting better. I have a fairly large yard and buy entire trays when I find something I’d like for my borders. I was beside myself when I found the supertunia Bordeaux, queen tut, and vermillionaire last week. My bubblegum lasted the entire season planted in part sun btw. Vista’s are definitely The way to go. My mission is to plant 15 yellow bidens, 10 bubblegum, and all my pots this weekend. We will see what my body allows:) so far I’ve purchased snowdrift, Bordeaux, and bubblegum, but have seen honey, red, and fuchsia so far this year. Happy gardening!

I purchase the Supertunia Mini Vista, white. They last until fall with non stop blooms in a large metal tub in full sun with very little fertilizing. Yes definitely water hogs and heavy feeders. My favorite is Limoncello. I water daily and use liquid fertilizer once a week but into late June - August I go twice a week. Regular trims help keep mine from becoming to leggy since I like mine more full looking. Also, I spray once a week for bug worms. Its work for sure, but I just love em so I do what I have to do. I tried Jazzberry and although I loved their color they just didn't perform for me. Can't wait to see how everything blooms together for ya!

Hi Amanda, ironically just yesterday I had a similar conversation about Supertunias at work, I agree after growing them compared to other brands they are worth the extra cost. I've come to the conclusion that 98% of the time Proven Winners are just that. My St Bubblegum even made it through the winter this yr in pots and ground w/o protection and starting to bloom again. Another interesting variety is the Picasso, green flower with a dk pink outline. Zone 9b 1 hr N of SF Ca.

Lewisville/Denton area here. I found a single Bubblegum on a Lowe's clearance rack and decided to try it since it's supposed to be so vigorous and my soil isn't great. Last year I gave everything a sprinkle of garden tone and iron tone since I'm bit of a lazy gardener. I wouldn't say it did amazing (probably my fault) but it did flower and stay healthy all year in a spot that gets late morning to evening sun. That spot also is shadier in winter, I didn't cut the plant back because I was using it to help protect a perennial hibiscus I had recently planted nearby. I was weeding a few weeks ago and found it had rooted along a few stems in the lawn and was alive and well even through the ice we had in Feb. Potted up 3 pieces before mowing and they now look healthier than what managed to survive on the base. I'm convinced that last year the iron tone is what kept many plants from scorching like they usually do.

Loved the video and love supertunias! My calloways in frisco Tx has had the white, latte, limoncello, honey and the bubblegum, and I’ve used each of these colors. I was not impressed with the growth of any of them except the bubblegum and the whites. I agree, about July the heat is just too much for them and it’s mainly the greenery that looks bad…the amount of water they need + sun just bleaches them out. That being said, you can bet I will pick up the whites and bubblegums as soon as I see them!! I think a lot of us have been influenced by Laura at GA to buy proven winners anything, but it’s up to us to test plants in our own zones to see what works!! I live in New Orleans, fairly close to you in zone 9A and I’ve grown Supertunia’s for years and I’ve never had a problem with them looking dull or dragged down by the heat. I'm blown away by the fact that people are saying they can't take the heat!?? I do keep mine in containers in full all day sun and they usually go crazy! I keep mine in containers and water every other day when it's 100 degrees. I can only get them at big box stores I so wish I could get big gorgous plants like you have there. Fushia eat my Bubblegum one year! I staggered two of each in a large container one year. The bubblegum did live and grow and mingle in and out nicely but definitely fushia out preformed! hey both grew over the side of my 24in tall container hit the ground and come back up. I did have to trim under them and try to keep them off ground but they were gorgous all summer in south georgia. With water sol fertalizer once a week and osmicote when planted always. Zone 7B, north MS. I only buy supertunias. I cannot stand the petunias that have to be deadheaded and never had any luck with wave petunias. I have had pretty good luck with Supercal petchoas, which supposedly are superior to regular petunias for heat tolerance. They do not have to be deadheaded. My first supertunia was the Pretty Much Picasso probably 10 or 12 years ago. Bubblegum is definitely the most vigorous, but probably my least favorite color. Paradise and Fuschia have both done well for me. A couple of years ago I planted the white Supertunia Snowdrift, Whiteout Superbenas and Diamond Frost Euphorbia together in the ground in front of my south-facing porch, and they bloomed beautifully all summer long. I think the Snowdrift Supertunia may come in a close second to Bubblegum in vigor. Although not a supertunia, the Latte did well for me on my south-facing front porch. I have never had any luck with the Lemon Slice petunia, but PW has come out with a yellow minivista supertunia this year that I plan to try.

Thx for this- I have NEVER had success w/ petunias in DFW TX and don’t want to fiddle w/ them, BUT when I kept hearing about PW supertunias I was wondering if they could take our dry hot summers. I don’t do plants I have to baby and that won’t last til frost. (I see your TCU sign do I guess you’re in my region).

I've come to associate the ST with your channel 🙂 I wish you could get the Rose Veined and the white purple veined Priscilla and the pink and purple veined Bordeaux. To me these are the ones I would want, the other colors don't do as much for me.

Just a wierd question. Can I use my orchid food on my petunias? My bubblegum petunia isnt blooming like the rest. I bought it in a pot with another color (light lilac center with white petals) that is full of blooms, while my bubble gum only has 3-4 blooms😣 it is large and full of beautiful green leaves. The buds stayed small and I let them be until I decided to dead head them thinking maybe they were seed pods and thats the reason why I wasnt getting more blooms… I wonder what I should do
@shesamadgardener
@shesamadgardener Жыл бұрын
They need a high nitrogen phosphorus or phosphate fertilizer to promote more blooms. So check the orchid fertilizer for high phosphorus!

Do you not have any Daylilies in your area? I would lean to more perennials in your big gardens instead of the annuals. They're so costly comparatively. I love supertunias tho, just wondered.

I do not have daylilies anymore … I’m not a fan of them because the blooms don’t last longer than a day or so. But I know lots of gardeners that LOVE them.

I don’t understand why you have problems with them during the heat of the summer. Everyone that talks about them, says they really take off in the heat. They fertilize weekly. Maybe that gives them more strength. I don’t know. Mine lasted really well all summer last year. My first year for the supertunia. This year, I am counting on the bubblegum to show off for me all summer. I will do my part, if it will. Glad to hear that you can take cuttings from them. Think I’ll try this fall and see what happens. What state do you garden in? They do take lots of water in the heat. Maybe yours don’t get enough. Wish you better luck with them.

I garden in Texas Zone 8 … in my garden, the supertunias can’t handle 30 plus days of triple degree temps with a low in the 90s each day … it’s just too hard on them. I’ve tried for years. But totally get if they work differently in yours … we all have very different environments.

Please help i have supertunia bubblegum disaster!! I grow them every year mostly bubblegum and Bordeaux because thats what i can find localy. This year i have those two in multiple pots. My bubblegum is dying one by one. My bordeux and honey and lemonchelo calibrachoa is fine. I cant figure why. One bubblegum was in the container with the honey!! I did buy 3 terrible looking bubblegum from a big box store early this year because they were the first vista i saw in my area. I dont know if they had some disease that prefer bubblegum to other supertunias but two of the 3 of those are gone the last one is about to be in bad shape. And two others that i bought healthy are almost gone. I have been using neem which im familiar with im also a long time supertunia fan. I just dont know why its just the bubblegum. Ive not lost one Bordeaux or any other plants???😢 Im sure there are no more bubblegum in my area. I just dont want to lose them all but it looks like that may happen. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this???

Pro tip, those DAS have spider mites because they're over loved with the annuals around them. Try a truly dry & less fertile spot before they go to trash. I'm in 7 b N. Georgia, we're still waiting for last freeze. Your flowers look great! Check out "Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't" for native Texas plant rants, he's self taught with a potty mouth but very knowledgeable.

I personally don't care for these plants. They overtake every container, hanging basket, etc. Why pay a lot of money for beautiful containers, for instance, then plant these that cover the entire container what's the point? I've never bought them and don't plan to. They just aren't my aesthetic, I like wispy ethereal plants and flowers. Thanks for the video.
