I've just learned something today that I wish I'd known many years before. Thanks Coach. This is the best educational channel on KZbin bar none. Please, everyone go tell all your friends to subscribe. Coach Tom (and Dan) spend many hours preparing such a slick and informative lesson for us each and every time. We can repay him by pushing his subscribers well over the 100 thousand mark... That's the least we can do. I love these lessons... No BS. Straight into the meat and potatoes, he provides backstory and context and shows and tells. I've never seen a below par lesson on here in well over a year of following...

Never heard of Willie Pep until maybe a week ago Coach Tom mentioned him in another video. I couldn’t believe this guy even existed during this time, I feel like he belongs here with us in this time line. I’m glad Coach is breaking down some of what Willie did and look forward as always to studying Coach Toms curriculum.

Awesome! Could you do a more in depth video on how to do the bouncing? I know some boxers, like Muhammad Ali, were very skilled at moving around the ring and their opponents using some sort of “bounce.”

Great move. Sometimes Willie would throw a straight left off that southpaw stance down the pipe since his lead foot is already on the outside...so slick.

Love your work Tom, hope to train with you one day. With this and another video you posted (step in for liver shot, weave right then switch) I feel that there is a whole science around controlling what punches your opponent throws. Using the angles, and positiong your "targets" in a certain way, it seems you can almost guarantee, predict which punches your opponent will throw. To a spectator in the audience, you will look like a ,magician, slipping punches evasivily and countering. But what the scientist knows, is that you already controlled which punch he was going to throw, without him knowing it. He swung, not realizing that his swing was actually a Part of your preplanned offensive maneuver. This totally changes the perspective of head movement, not as having the most incredible reflexes amd reaction time ever, but rather, in a ,methodical way, orientating yourself around your opponent so that hes taking the oppertunities he thinks hes getting but doesnt realize you're giving him. In a movie called Revolver by Guy Ritchie about chess and cons, something like this was mentioned "I feed you my pieces and let you take them, not realizing the set up." Or how a pool hustler starts at a disadvantage, his opponent not realizing that now the table is now clear for his shots. I am beginning to find that once you get the physical out of the way (proper mechanics, conditioning, combinations etc) once that is perfected, it is all mental, psychological and spiritual after that. I wonder if you may one day make a video addressing solely the strategy aspect of boxing. For instance, chess has openers, developing, further combative tactics, and finally mating. This is something I struggle with in boxing. For instance, as a shorter fighter, what is my boxing opener? Find my reach, establish the jab, gather Intel, probe for mistakes/openings, then capitalize, choosing g from an array of tools in my toolbox sorted to adress an array of openings? (This does not even include things li me psychological warfare, like Ali's trashtalk during the fight, or aspects like Belief and Confidence) What should be your game plan when boxing, from a ,mental standpoint? Just something I brood about often. Wasnt expecting this comment to be so huge. But you Really do break things down in a scientific way, as any gifted teacher does, so I thought I'd ask!

After boxing 10 years I decided to focus on not getting hit during sparring. started doing Mayweather style defense and not throwing big combos, just making them miss, pay , get outta the way, reset and do it again. Heard Floyd talk up Willie Pep and ive been working these shifts into my game and I get hit way less. Its genius stuff

It's funny cuz I'm an amateur and I am ambidextrous so I thought I was smart to switch to left to throw off the guy. Good to know this is known. So I'd go for a right logic to lure the man and switch when he strikes I'd turn south paw to pound a hook. Please comment on me. I need help.
