Great work Jeff. A heap of work mate. It will be interesting to see where the turbo is going to go as the space in the engine bay is rapidly disappearing. I had the same surprise. It might be wise to map out the turbo's location if you haven't already. Mrs Jeff spoke about rusty piles of stuff now moved. This is a quality build. I guess you have plans for the rust. It deserves a nice paint job.

I'm glad you're adding a turbo to this. These engines are quite potent as I've seen these buses overloaded with people in my country flying along. The turbo will just be the cherry on top

I drove a coaster up and down the east coast last year, the switch on the accelerator pedal is for the exhaust brake.

@@markwalton8644 Have you heard that loud rumbling noise trucks make sometimes when they're slowing down? Its a valve that closes in the exhaust to increase the resistance of the engine turning. When you want to slow down, you use the increased compression resistance of the engine to slow the vehicle down without using the brakes

the exhaust brake works off a switch that is on the steering collum and is disengaged when the accelerator is pressed

Is there an exhaust brake fitted? Switch might be needed for exhaust, exhaust brake comes on when foot is off accelerator….

Jeff, you may have it all worked out re rod lengths for linkages, but if you want adjustability, there are plenty of linkage systems with ball ends and threaded sections that allow fine tuning of linkages. Any race garage should be able to point you in the right direction.

The switch on the throttle pedal is for the Jacque brake, Jeff. These buses have them. You should either leave it or mount it somewhere where the pedal can activate it.

Well done on the linkage. I’ve just done the same job on my central driving position 205 (Jim’s shed….). I deleted one of levers on the box (side to side) and just did it via a uj on the actual selector with a completely custom linkage. Forgive the self publicity and she’s looking good. I did wonder about those frame rails springing, btw!!

Those two nuts connect to cotter pins like the old style of push bike peddles.

Yeah, I thought they were cotter pins too which just need a good hammering out, but Jeff said he tried that.

@@worldofrandometry6912 There is limited space for hammer blows. The cover that incorporates the lever arm needs to be removed, to allow sufficient access to drive out the said cotter pin.

I've got a Landcruiser gearbox sitting around my workshop. Yours for $500 but you have to come pick it up! It's a 79 series so a V8 box. Don't know if it's different.

Thanks, but this box works and if I bought that I would still need to buy a shifter, a clutch and potentially a different hand brake and drive shaft mounting and a bunch of other things ;)

The gear stick looks like it's turned 180° around... I could be wrong and I've certainly never seen a Toyota Coaster as we don't have them... but usually manuals have a rearward lean to the gear shift or sit vertical... it would suck to have to do it again if it was turned around the wrong way... 😯

The throttle switch is a throttle stop so you con not move off when the side door is open.

With your concept, aren’t you selecting the gears now reversed? I mean 1st gear originally on the upper left position is now on the lower right spot. I got this thought when seeing your gear stick with this angle and the linkages going towards not backwards as in the bus 🧐

Are you sure the throttle switch doesn’t have a purpose that you’re going to discover later? For instance, some vehicles have controls to check that brake and throttle aren’t applied at the same time. I know I have had issues on both a Mercedes and an Alfa Romeo caused by this conflict (on the Merc it was the brake switch failed). On the Alfa, it would cut the engine.

It may do, but this is a very dumb engine. No wiring (except maybe glow plugs), no ECU, so it should be OK.

⁠@@HomeBuiltByJeff fingers crossed. But that may actually be why there’s a switch (hopefully not). If there was an ECU, you wouldn’t need a switch. It could just be a relay which does something (eg cuts the fuel?). I can’t think why a switch would be there for no reason…
