I feel bad for everyone in the Shimura family, including Kotaro. He suffered just as much as his son did. The reason his mother left him in foster care was because Kotaro’s father (Nana’s husband) was killed by an unknown villain (presumably All for One). In my personal opinion, there are other ways that Tenko’s transformation into Tomura could’ve been avoided. Some people may blame the father, because of being abusive, but I believe part of that blame goes to Nana for not taking care of him and quitting the hero life or telling Gran Torino about Kotaro. If she told him, then maybe Kotaro and Toshinori would be like brothers. Kotaro being the younger brother, Toshinori being the older brother, and Gran Torino being the father figure they would look up too. If that happened, then Kotaro wouldn’t be resenting heroes. Kotaro would later meet Nao (Tenko’s mother) and Hana and Tenko would be born and they would grow up to be a hero family duo of siblings like they wanted.

I’ve thought about this for a good min now. So we know from the beginning that Deku is only shown with his mother. WHAT IF “all for one” left because he knew couldn’t manipulate Deku because he was too “bright” he worshipped “one for all” heavily whom “all for one” hates. And in the end Deku becomes everything “all for one” wanted a multiple quirk using killing machine.

I have a different theory.. All for One **created and gave** Shigaraki his quirk - then dropped him home knowing it would be a matter of time based on his intel. He killed Nana and when he learned about the secret family he planned to find a way to use them against All Might - saw potential in Shigaraki - The abused and isolated boy longing to be 'something' (loved/valued/appreciated) and who coincidentally was quirk-less (like his brother who he gave One for All) was the ideal blank vessel. This explains why they were so ready/aware/involved and had detailed future steps - Why they recovered and used the hands of his family why they know mental state is the trigger and what/when he would be ready for the next stage in his power-up development. They knew how deadly the quirk he gave could be but his mind had to get to a stage to master it - this is likely the physical and mental fortitude and awareness that would be needed in order to be able to control/use All for One. I think my theory makes sense and explains a lot. What do you think?

I think All For One actually gave him his quirk. He probably gave it to him the day he brought him back home. He gave him the decay quirk probably so he would accidentally kill his family which would leave him in a state that would not only make him an orphan so All For One could essentially adopt him; but it would also cause him to be more easily manipulated from the trauma, and it would give him a taste of how good murderous vengeance feels. All For One kind of reminds me of Palpatine from Star Wars. Taking someone who was initially good and had good potential but manipulating them to become villains.

Alright. I just had a crazy theory idea hit me, and it regards the Deku stolen quirk theory. However, this has a big question mark to it since I don't know at what age AFO visited Shigaraki. For it to make sense, Shigaraki would have to be nine at least since he and Deku are 4 years apart. The theory I have is, at age 5 when Deku was told he had no quirk, that was when the quirk was stolen. And his quirk was a new mutation that was DECAY! In other words, this would mean that Shigaraki has Midoriya's quirk. It would be a rather symbolic bit of writing if that ended up being the case, in more ways than one.

Maybe his quirk isn't actually his own quirk to begin with. Maybe that is a quirk that All for One gave him before he dorpped him off at his home. I wouldn't put it past All for One to give him a more destructive quirk so this "accident" that wiped out his family could happen and maybe mess a bit with his mind to fan the flames of his hatred for his abusive father. We've seen a few flashbacks to quirks that manifest for the first time and most of them seem rather weak and only grow strong over time. Shigaraki on the other hand had a really powerful first manifestation... rather similar to Midoria when he first used One for All. He was also late in awakening his quirk, so maybe he didn't actually have to begin with. If both him and Midoria started out quirkless but then got their respective quirks from All Might and All for One respectively, it would futher the parallels between them.
