I personally don't shift the FD that much, so before spending the extra on Ultegra just because of that, I'd really ask myself if that is such an important point for you. But of course, Ultegra DI2 has lots of other advantages, so it might be worth it, but it's gonna depend on how manufacturers price their bikes

As always great commentary and feedback David. I own a 7000 series 105 groupset. To my surprise 7K 105 is much better than my 6800 series Ultegra and as good as my 810 GRX - these are the best Mechanical groupsets I have owned. The weight is also 500g less than the new Di2 105 which is a big difference. Given weight, price and fact any experienced cyclist will thuroughly enough shimanos mechanical offerings the cost of this groupset is not a prudent expense. 100% your better off putting that money into wheels and or great kit. Given the shift in economy and record bike prices making most shoppers drop one or two tiers I think Shimano may have picked the WORST time to drop mechanical they could have ever chosen.

Really minor point but are you saying that the front shifting feels like R6870 Ultegra Di2 or R8070? The picture of the front mech you showed is 6870, but 'last gen' is technically now R8070? The reason I ask, is that if I recall, the front shifting performance was where Shimano put in the effort for the latest gen of Di2. Yes it went 12 speed and semi wireless (even though pros are using it fully wired) but Shimano were most proud of the ability to shift under any load particularly the front. So if this 105 gen doesn't have that tech but it feels as good as R8070 then I think calling it old and slow is probably a bit much - up until 2 months ago prior to the latest gens hitting the shops. That 'old and slow' was the benchmark of front shifting performance. Certainly better than anything from SRAM. (I totally appreciate that the new generations may have really moved the game on in this regard and now stepping back down to them might feel old and slow, but most people will step up to this shifting quality so it's all about perception) If it front shifts like 6870 Di2 from 2013 however, that is probably a different story and fair game to call out, given the cost etc.

I have a Cube litening which I bought in 2015. It has mechanical Dura ace 9000 and weighs just over 6.5kg. It cost £3,500 at the time. The increase in bike prices over recent years is pretty unbelievable.

I have a Giant TCR 2023 at 7.5kgs with discs and DI2 and it costs 3300 euro. So it's 700 euro cheaper, has aero wheels and frame, has DI2 and much better braking. Your complaints about bike prices is so 2020.

9kg it's as heavy as my aluminium winter bike 🤣 My aero rim braked aircode with 105 is 7.5kg and that's with no lightweight parts at all, got vision 55mm wheels and alloy bars stem etc I don't worry about getting it lighter, and it was literally half the price too. Manufacturers are taking the Michael now.

We will see if italian bike brands start to gain popularity. Campagnolo has an brilliant affordable and lightweight 12 speed mechanical groupset with rimbrakes. The Campagnolo Chorus. (2.3kg rim 2.6 kg disc) 105 DI2 is 3kg. Chorus is also roughly 600 euro's cheaper retail as an groupset.

It's crazy, you can get a mtb hardtail with dropper, fork suspension and a massive cassette for 7,8kg, and it's also wireless.

@@artoutlawphoto Well those hardtails do not come cheap. certainly not in the 3k-4k range the 105di2 roadbikes sit. That kind of weight can only be achieved by top spec forks wheels C68 frames and titanium groupsets. And even then 7.8 kg is pushing the limit.

Just like the Rival. Change the cassette and crankset and you will shave off a ton of grams without a ton of money. Most of the difference between top tier stuff that cost 3-4x as much is mostly in the cassette and crankset.

I did a little research, and the 105 7000-series groupset with hydraulic disc brakes comes in at about 2.5 kg including cables. The rim brake version of r7000 comes in at about 2.2 kg. The new 12-speed, di2 105 is about 3kg. Especially given the very large price increase, this is very disappointing. Personally, I plan to stick to my current mechanical 105 groupset, which works brilliantly, until I get a new bike, at which point I'll probably opt for GRX or SRAM. I prefer road bikes, but I'm older, I'm not racing, and I like to do multi-day trips entirely on the bike, which involves carrying some weight and having a 30/46 chainring. I'm not at all certain that this new version of 105 would be very useful to me.

Because it's probably made for older, heavier and more solvent cyclists who want the glam of electronic shifting but not the Ultegra prices, not whippets who go up hills faster than I can on my ebike. Interest declaration: I have a 34:34 with a 105 hydro disc set up because I am the above and live on a hill. I need it. I'm also cheap so the electronic shifting is not going to happen for me so the bike I have will probably see me out.

The Canyon has deep dish carbon wheels. Level up the wheelset on the Orro, and its not such a great value, though I really do like the look of it. I don't need those massive mountain bike gears though, and would prefer a short cage and 12/25 for my riding conditions and lighter weight.

Interesting. Just to point out that all new Shimano Di2 shifters use CR1632 batteries not the CR2032 you have pictured at 10:56. Note that SRAM AXS shifters use the CR2032 batteries. You are correct in that 105 Di2 uses two CR1632 though. These are all commodity batteries. In my opinion, the CR2032 is much more common but that is a minor point.

The shifters don’t feature the auxiliary hood button seen on the two higher-tier groupsets. They also lose out on the option to fit satellite shifters (or so-called ‘sprint shifters’). Unlike Dura-Ace and Ultegra, the brakes also don’t feature Servo Wave. Servo Wave makes the relationship between the brake lever and pad non-linear, improving modulation. Servo Wave is also seen on the brand’s GRX gravel groupset. Super expensive, no rim brake option and mechanical version. That is a big fail imo. I don't need disk brake . Only thing it does for me for my usage is making the bike heavier lol

12 Speed Ultegra has a rim brake option.Tthe ST-R8150 shifters are 12 speed Di2 rim brake shifters. Also 12 Speed Dura Ace has a rim brake option ST-R9250 shifters, so why do people think they won't produce a riim brake option on 105. I'm sure they will produce a mechanical and rim brake 105 option too. BYW my winter bike with mudguards is lighter than this bike. This bike is way too heavy and too expensive for what it is.

Yup got a giant revolt advanced 0 this year with top mechanical grx as I didn't want to splurge for 11spd di2. Will do that in couple of years once can justify newer bike. Should be soonish for it. Next year even.

Pretty sad they’re saying you have to use the 11-34 cassette, with its bigger gaps. I’m sure many riders won’t need a 34 : 34 gear ratio. Why not give you a say a 11 or 12-30 cassette option, for example, without that ugly long-cage?

But if I have a carbon bike it better be lighter that my lightest ti bike..which is 15lbs loaded....hard to beat but thats why you buy carbon...for stiffness and weight... 9kg is like riding a steel bike...no way a carbon bike should be that heavy disc or not

I was going to buy the aeroad, but It really isn't a light bike. The weight stated is xxsmall frame. Not to mention it already has the carbon seat post, handlebars, and wheels. So essentially you can't loose that much more weight. I also don't like that the small sizes come with 650b wheels. I decided to get a pinarello Paris with rival etap. Yes the bike is heavy, but you can get the weight down considerably. Also I just love the way the bike looks. I'm 4'11 and it is very difficult to find a bike that will fit me well.

A lot of comments about the bike for this groupset review. I've got the 2019 Venturi (small) fitted out with r8020 and konax pro wheels, weighs in a pinch over 8 kg with alloy cockpit +Pedals. Rapid and comfortable bike. Even with winter tyres and helicopter tape it's only 8.4

Nice to see Orro featured. Got a 2019 Terra C GRX and 2018 Gold STC Ultegra and been very happy with them. Would recommend the brand. Not sure I could stomach over £3000 for a 9kg bike with entry level wheels (although better than the typical cheap rubbish wheels you get with Cannondale).

They say you can't use it with 11-28, but I'd be interested in if it would work anyway. I had a deore bike that originally came with 11-32 and switched down to an 11-23 cassette and it shifted flawlessly. There's little reason why a rear derailleur would shift any differently with a smaller cassette than it was designed to handle.

I recently upgraded my groupset and bought a short cage rear mech. In my experience, 11-28 and 11-25 work with pretty much all long cage derailleurs. However, the shifting isn't as crisp and the setup is a bit more finicky.

It's not going to happen. Unless that's the joke? Wireless braking would need to be normally clamped (braking), actively not braking with a continuous signal. Otherwise it would fail open in the event of flat batteries or loss of connection. With that being the case, the batteries are constantly draining. To maintain a good lifecycle they'd need to be pretty big. Then, if the battery did fail you'd have the brakes engaging 100% suddenly. None of this is safe.

Give a Cruzbike V20 a try. I am almost 6kph faster than my TT bike on it at a much lower power output. 2 hours max for me on the TT bike and I need a forklift to get me off it, and 8 hours for me on my V20. After I get off my V20 I can move around without my neck, back, ass or wrists hurting. It costs me about 210 watts for me to do 40kph on my V20 compared with 270 on my TT bike. Last month I raced a Japanese guy on his Cervelo P5/6. We both did 25km at 45.6kph with a slight tailwind. It cost me 211w to his 286w. He gave up at 25km, I continued on for another 18km. My TT bike has been hanging on the wall for 2 years except for 4 rides of about 50km each just to remind me how much I love my V20. With SRAM Force AXS I have only 2 brake wires hanging out in the breeze. For reference, my CdA on my V20 is about 0.200 and I can still get it down to 0.190 or maybe even 0.180 making it even more slippery.

@@marccarter1350 Fair enough and that is extremely important :) My TT bike is still an incredible bike. But I switched because I wanted longer saddle time. You can simply conserve energy for longer rides with the improved aerodynamics. Recumbents are still very comfortable as the seat contact patch is not only larger to distribute the body weight, but the reclined position takes more of your weight off your ass. V20 means a 20 degree seat angle, S40 means 40 degrees, but the S40 is a great touring bike. The legs being elevated means that your heart gets break because it doesn't need to lift the blood as it would on a diamond framed bike. Plus, the view is much better than looking at the front tire hahaha. It wouldn't hurt to try one. V20 owners in your area would be happy to let you give theirs a go.

Claris, Sora, and Tiagra are the "people's" groupsets. Going higher in the Shimano range adds nothing but ego boost for the average casual or recreational rider and very little for fast club riders. Having 12 cogs means having a very narrow chain and very fussy indexing, something pro riders seldom worry about but the rest of us have to deal with every day. For me, electronically controlled shifting and 12 gears in the back are completely unnecessary, potentially problematic, and ultimately inferior compared to older and more bombproof 9 or 10-cog units. I have 11 mechanically-shifted cogs on my new-to-me Potenza-equipped bike, but that's my limit.

Shimano has totally misjudged the market judging from the comments. If it sells as badly as it is being slated in the comments, then hopefully it will be a stark reminder that customer is still king. The cycling industry has been on a mission to sell bikes with components like disc brakes to consumers who do not want for the extra £$ for a heavier bike, given they could get a lighter bike a few years ago for far less just 5 years ago.

@@davidarthur I would call it a form of Market Research. Ultegra Di2 cost £1100 when it came out. Granted there is inflation but if Shimano want it to sell I would expect it to be roughly the same price. Instead we have a heavier and significantly more expensive product. I'd rather use an old Ultegra Di2. It would be a lot lighter and without and cheaper. Both things that their market research teams should have realised the consumer is interested in. @@davidarthur Look at ANY 105 Di2 video and the comments are filled with people slating the price. This is a huge misstep from Shimano. You say nobody builds a business or product line based on comments but it's a Marketing team and product research teams job to understand their target audience. Given that viewers & commenters of Shimano 105 review videos are already interested in the topic, I would say it shows that their target audience is unimpressed at the price. It's a gross mistake to underestimate your target market. Many times companies have been burnt by this. If anything the price point might even hurt Shimano as consumers will now consider rival brands.

Just checked the price... looks like this Shimano gear costs half the price of that bike... But so do other brands cost and even more. Why is it so expensive? The SRAM RED ETAP AXS 1X ELECTRONIC SHIFT KIT costs as much and there was another whole set that costs over 2000 $. Seems that Shimano is not the most expensive one. I'ld like electronic shifting, but that price tag is way too high. I stick with the old mechanical shifting, thank you very much.

As you're gonna need to replace basically everything, I can almost guarantee, you that it's not worth it unless there is something wrong with your 105 and you need to change parts anyway, or just have money laying around, but not enough for Ultegra DI2. But Ultegra R8050 would probably be the smarter upgrade as it's cheaper and you can keep the same cassette and crank

True you would be comparing different technical solutions to a similar business case, however the comparison would be very fair from a pricepoint perspective. Which is my question: what is the advantage of electronic? Is the £800 additional cost of the mechanical justified when all other components in the mechanical groupet are higher level? Or are those lower level components just as good and should we just accept the additional weight?

@@teunluijbregts2533 The benefits of electronic shifting are easy. There is never a need to adjust tension on the cables. (every cable stretches and with ever increasing gears the tolerances become smaller.) The front derailleur can auto adjust for chain line. This also allows for an narrower front cage with results in quicker more decisive shifting. The downsides are easy to summerize in 1 word. complexity. complexity leads to higher prices and higher weight. Obviously the weight penalty can be circumvented by using more advanced materials and construction techniques. But this make the price penalty even worse and is not compatible with what 105 means for Shimano's customers. I think for the bikes that used to retail arround 1600-2500 with Shimano 105. Campagnolo Centaur and Chorus have become genuinely better options. Shimano just destroyed there own mid tier market. Tiagra 10 speed is just not good enough and 105 11speed seems discontinued. They'd better rebrand their old 105 to Tiagra or like with Deore (there is 6xxx 5xxx and 4xxx deore) and make a separate component tier for mechanical 105. or they will lose marketshare.

No the previous Ultegra Di2 was lighter (2,5kg compared to 3kg of this 105) and 11 speed. They made a new groupset based on the new ultegra but with less advanced materials and production methods. Hence the increase in weight.

@@davidarthur Hi David, I think he might be implying how does the performance of the 11 speed Ultegra Di2 (8000 series) compare to this 105 groupset independent of the fact that the 105 has one more gear. For example, you mentioned one thing in this video. 11 speed Ultegra Di2 has buttons on the hoods that can be programmed to do a variety of functions... Including control your cycling computer. The 12 speed 105 does not. Another example would be the weights of the 12 speed 105 vs. the 11 speed Ultegra. The Ultegra 11 speed is quite a bit lighter...especially the rim brake version. Which is another example. The 11 speed Ultegra is offered with rim brakes. The 12 speed 105 is disc only. For some people the extra gear of the 12 speed 105 may be a matter of life and death. For others, the 11 speed Ultegra's feature set, plus the fact that you can now get it at a lower price than 12 speed 105, may make it the the favored option. Sounds like a subject for a future video!!!!
