Great vid 👍 Just an extra tip that the external serration tool doesn't need to be a Shimano TL-FC32. There are plenty of aftermarket sockets and wrenches out there that do exactly the same thing. Look for anything thats 'Hollowtech II' compatible and save some coin

I prefer oldskool V brakes so need to remove disc also I swear I worked for you a long time ago fixing city workers bikes and giving large seminars on bike care... I really enjoyed that work (however I might have the wrong person so many apologies) and I still cycle every day. Say no to electric motors lol

Can those lockrings be interchanged? My rotors have studs which stick out and make some BB tools a nightmare to use, if I could switch to the rings with the cassette lockring fitting that would be much better

They're interchangeable in most cases, but there are some hubs that can't take internally-splined lockrings, like the rear hub of a Chris King R45D.

Can we use both rings with any kind of centerlock rotor? I'm currently using v-brakes and thinking about to switch hydrolic disc brakes. I have centerlock hubs on my bike. When I buy centerlock rotors does it come with the ring? I wanna set it up by myself and I don't know if the rotor comes with a ring or not. Good to know that SM-HB20 is advertised as 15 and 20mm thru axle solution only, but it also can be used on 12mm thru axle.

Love our videos, thank you! I have an odd question; right now, I have Ultegra SM-RT800 Rotors (140mm) on my bike, and I'm changing them to Dura Ace SM-RT900 (also 140mm) rotors. I noticed that the middle locking nut is black on the Ultegra and silver on the Dura Ace, which is the opposite of what I'd expect. I know they're interchangeable and have seen several KZbinrs exchange them when installing the Dura Ace rotors, but I'm wondering if there's a weight difference between the two. My rotors are in the mail, so I won't know until I get them, but if you happen to know, please let me know. Thanks!

Ive got the BBT-69 - but cant get the lock ring off! Keeps slipping and its fucking up the tool and ring. Any tips for removing it? Think I prefer the inner lock ring as it gives more purchase than the outer style.

Anyone wondering why I'd do such a thing - already have 6 bolt rotors but wanted a better wheel but that came with centre lock. Wasn't prepared to buy new rotors etc.

I have Fulcrum 400 DB wheelset and the 44mm 16 notch lockring removal socket I bought doesn't work.... it has an EXTERNAL lockring installed; it has 16 notches.... and to my measurements is 44mm. Why won't this work? Are Fulcrum lockrings different? This is a 11-speed Shimano bike with Shimano Ultegra rotors......

Great video as always. But how do you know when you’ve hit 40nm of torque using the spanner?

Like cassettes, they tighten in the opposite direction as rotation, so it really doesn't matter too much. Unlike cassettes, they don't deal with ratcheting, so it matters even less. Just hold the wheel between your legs, and put a good amount of force into the tool, and you'll be good as long as you hear a few clicks. Anything 20nm and over is probably more than good enough.

Yes, internally-splined lockrings fit road bikes best as they have no clearance issues. Externally-splined ones usually have clearance issues at the fork due to the lower insert for flat-mount disc brakes. Some forks come very close to them and others may even touch them. Because of this, I purposely bought internally-splined lockrings for my RT-MT800s, which came with the other type, but there are units that come with the internally-splined counterpart, just that it's harder to find.

Thank you for informative video. I've got tx505 hub and sm-rt10 disc. In the video the center lock ring you show has 12 teeth inside and that's same as cassette tool teeth you use. Oddly sm-rt10 disc center lock ring has 10 tooth inside and 16 tooth outside. I'm looking for a cheap tool to open it. Do you have an idea?

You can use either type on the rear! It’s only a problem if you have a 15mm thru axle on the front fork then the external type will be required.

Looks like you may be able to use a bottom bracket tool like the BBT-69.2 that has a 3/8” drive for a torque wrench/ratchet

I can't use my Park Shimano pattern cassette locking tool on my Mavic Allroad back wheel to remove the disc lockring as it won't fit over the hub axle. Any advice on how to overcome this? It's fine on the front wheel as the axle doesn't extend so far out from the hub.
