Solid 60lb BFT caught on a shimano Terez 80MH and Shimano Tranx 400HG on 50lb braid with 30lb fluoro leader size 4 circle hook on a small sardine fly lined. Drag was losing pressure from overheating and had to pour cold water to cool it down. UNREAL!!! 1hr fight.

Thanks for sharing, line capacity did not look like an issue for flyline surface fishing, just drag, so a Penn fathom 15 is only 16oz and has a lever drag, that might be just the ticket.

These reels are hella strong but yeah a 60 lb tuna is no joke, specially bluefin. A guy here in Cali got the washers warped from a 40lb tuna... But I'm thinking he locked the drag and also had been using it a lot. Tranx reels tend to become the one and all tool. This dude was really smart in how he caught it, it also took an hour...

how would the 300 hold up in the same conditions, I mean it does not have as much line but the same drag but using thinner dia line must work. i have a 58lb braid with the diameter of a 8-10lbs mono or 0.011 inches (0,28mm) thick line

Personally I don’t think it would have held up. That 400 was pushed beyond its limits and it fried the drag pretty bad. The reel got so hot you couldn’t really hold it. The tranx 500 would be the perfect reel for this.

Would you guys recommend high gear or low gear tranx for bottom fishing catfish, but also some muskie fishing? Getting the 400 size, but can't decide on the gear ratio. Mostly fishing big rivers if it makes any difference. Don't want to strain my arms pulling in big baits all day with high gear, but also don't want to wind like a maniac trying to recover a lot of line quickly. Is there really that much torque difference between the two? I can only afford one right now, and it will have to do well in different types of fishing. Thank you and tight lines

@theemptyvesseltv
@theemptyvesseltv 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheEKIM1976 Your reply to sharkbitten on the lexa was, "i wouldn't use the lexa400 above 40lb setup". Why is that so? Thought the line capacity is more on the lexa. Drag is higher too. Is it because of the drag curve?

Ok, educate me here. I've never caught a big Tuna. That reel has 22 lbs of drag. Can't you use say, a 40 or 50 lb top shot and bottom out the drag if necessary once it's first big run is over and starts to circle/ creep out those 100'+ mid fight runs?
@TheEKIM1976
@TheEKIM1976 3 жыл бұрын
Here’s a lil education crash course for ya. Blue fin tuna are probably the most picky tunas when it comes to getting bit. The problem is you can toss 40-50lb leaders and the bait won’t swim right and never get bit or, down size to smaller diameter line with smaller hooks for a better presentation and get bit. Your idea sounds great but, when the bite is tough you have to down size. I wish it was 40-50lb all day long. 🤣
@RH-qk5lt
@RH-qk5lt 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheEKIM1976 That's exactly what I thought you were going to say. I just couldn't believe that a Tuna down say 80, 100, 150 feet would be sensitive to another 10 or 20 lb line dia. I get it if they're pushing bait to the surface and you're typically hooking them on surface or 10' below. Thanks for the reply. Great video.

I was thinking 30-40 max. Just had a few 60 lbers processed at Five Star and they were a lot bigger than that.

Wrong gear for that grade of fish. It’s like butchering a cow with a steak knife.
