This is a start to finish screw by screw service tutorial. The only thing missing is removal of the thumb bar. (video file corrupted) There is s a single screw on the thumbar facing the front of the reel. Once removed the assembly can then be removed.

Do not use metal tools around the rubber seals treated with Core Protect. Always wear nitrile gloves and use of plastic tweezers when dealing with these treated seals. The frame to spool seal and clutch button seals have this coating. Use of metal tools or bare fingers will remove the coating. The effectiveness of the seal is degraded once the coating has been removed. Also be careful using oil and certain greases other than what Shimano recommends to preserve the coatings. Some cleaners can also remove the coating.

or just don't worry about those things and use palm wax (shoe wax) on those parts if you f%^ked up the coating somewhere.

I got a 300 as a swimbait reel last year and just cleaned it for the first time. Very impressed after a year with it and now seeing all the internals. I replaced the worm gear bushing with a bearing and just lightly lubed everything since it won't be seeing any salt. Butter smooth.

I was too! I had the chance to play with an early prototype about 10 months prior to release. Then false leaks of a non sealed curado came out and i got worried they were gonna bail on the sealing. Gotta admit though the prototype was a sick black. Wish they stuck with that color scheme. Was even more shocked that the Tackle tour website who claims to be the authority on unbiased reviews completely omitted the seals as being important. And stated the abu was more refined which is absolute BS. I even confronted them about why they left out the seals...And Cal said seals have been around for a long time and it wasn't worth mentioning and wasn't innovative. I think that was the final straw....now I feel they are just shills

I got into my TranX 300 and serviced it with the Quantum hot sauce grease and oil that seems to be good stuff when I used it on my ABU 6500s CL Big game ,Blue yonder and Inshore model the grease didn't migrate away from the teeth of the gears like the Penn green grease. and the reels operate smoother.

Make sure you grease up the BNT5506 clutch cam retainer very well (the part held with two screws and two long post sticking out at 12:50 with the number 1712). That crappy part is made out of a cast metal and easily corrodes. If its badly corroded, you lose the ability to use the clutch to go into freespool. Its the worse component inside the reel.

Do you know the size of knob washers? In my model from 2018 (301a) there were no washers, I checked 10 times. After knob plastic bushings exchange to metal bearings (4mmx7mmx2,5mm - adopted from lexa 300 knobs) looseness appeared around 0,5-1 mm. Not big deal but i would like to reduced it either by using washers or exchanging bearings to a bit bigers (4X7X3).

Just discovered your Channel. Great videos, I really appreciate your focus on design and build quality! Do you see a ergonomic advantage of the 300 over the 400 (I have XL to XXL glove size), maybe a higher tendency of the rod rolling from side to side while cranking? Wich one would cast 1-2oz lures further assuming a full spool and the identical line type on both?

Such a helpful video. After changing out reel handles on my Tranx 300A I needed help and this was perfect. Hoping you could help with a concern I have. I’ve noticed upon reassembly of the star drag I only have one star drag spacer (part 2172) but the schematics clearly shows that there should be two. And I also noticed in this video there was only 1 on the reel you are servicing. Is that common? I have 2 Tranx 300 reels and the range of motion on the drag is drastically different. I think because one has 2 spaces and the other has only one. Idk...please advise!

The star drag range is relatively small compare with Shimano fresh water reels. This reel doesn't have much midrange drags. If I install a couple of drag spring washers from other Shimano fresh water reels, will it affect the Tranx performance? BTW the worm gear on my reel doesn't have the black coating. They are exactly the same reels.

Hi man, i really like your videos. I'm sorry if someone has yet asked, but i've two questions: which is the "lower weight" you can succesfully cast with 300 and 400 respectively? And, do you suggest me the 300 or the 400 size for both Sw and fw application? I'm gonna use it for Little tuna, amberjack and dorado that reaches max 30 lb here in Mediterranean sea and, sometimes, for pike and wels (wels reach about two metres length and 60-70 kilos) fishing in fw with lures that reach 2 Oz max, both for fw and sw. I asked a shimano pro staff for help: he told me 300 reel could fit best for these situation beacuse i can reach a better casting distance with the lures ill be using. I'm not fully convinced beacuse i think i will regret picking the little size beacuse of the less spool capacity (ill be using 30-40 lb for Sw, but at least 50-60lb power pro for wels). Can you help me to choose? 😊 Thanks a lot for replies and sorry for so many questions (and for my terrible english) 😁

I never really used it for light applications. But my friend who helped develop the reel for shimano used it in british columbia for steelhead. Throwing half ounce spoons with no issue. I would go with the 400 size for the extra capacity should you use heavier braid

Sweet. Congrats! Awesome reel!I haven't really went with no brakes and tenioner only. I spend most of my time with 1 brake on....2 if it's windy. I set mine so the tenioner is backed off to allow slight side to side spool movement!

I ordered some abec 7s now. couldn't let it be. will compare them to stock and see what happens. am i supposed to run ceramic hybrids dry or use a drop of rocket fuel?
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 жыл бұрын
Weird...i thought i replied to your question.... I fish with no spool tension and rely solely on the brakes and my thumb. If fishing in the salt you need to make sure you run some sort of oil in the bearings to prevent against corrosion. Also depending on where you order them from. Some orange seal bearings come greased so you need to remove that factory grease to maximize casting peformance. Also note that rocket fuel oil doesn't last very long. I've since switched to TSI 321 for pretty much every spool bearing application.
@noiztrauma
@noiztrauma 6 жыл бұрын
You did 3 days ago ;) Well I fish brackish water in europe so yeah, salt but not that much. The ones I ordered come completely dry so I will ad a drop of rocket fuel i guess. Ok, how long would you say it lasts if fished let's say 1-3 days a week? TSI 321 is not really available in europe, but i might be able to get it off of ebay.

TSI i find lasts multiple times longer

I came to this video to see the level wind being taken out of the reel... however that did not happen so I'm looking for someone in the comments w experience for some help. I have my tranx 300 and the line guide is cracked... 100lb braid max drag grouper was a bad idea. Anyways I ordered a new line guide and its on it way and so Ive been trying to do some research on how to take that part of the reel apart in order to access the line guide and replace it. If anyone knows how to do that and can explain it to me or has any tips it would be greatly appreciated.

@TackleAdvisors 6 жыл бұрын
I dig it.. You talkin about the krytox? Or the green stuff. The krytox as long as you fully degrease the component you're applying it to it's great. If you don't it serves no purpose.
@fresh2salt318
@fresh2salt318 6 жыл бұрын
Tackle Advisors yea I meant the krytox it looks like good stuff , there is also this stuff-- Finish Line Extreme Fluoro Grease, it's 100% Teflon might also be a good drag grease.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 жыл бұрын
I'd stick with the standard proven greases from cals or shimano. Greased drags don't make that much of a difference in the first place. And in most cases you apply it and wipe if almost completely off. It might be great stuff....but honestly even if it was 10x better....what would the difference really be.

I have an issue with my newer Tranx 300 HG where the reel loses its drag in colder weather. It can be mid to high 30s, so not even freezing, and the drag will be almost completely gone. Put it in the car to warm up for an hour and it functions properly. I've read about this on a few forums with no clear answer to the fix. Has anyone experienced this or know the fix?

Hey man, I find myself asking for a help a lot here, but I have another issue. One of my shimano baitcasters is really smooth until you put any tension on the line, then I can feel a bit of resistance and lots of little vibrations, even when I’m just putting tension on the line to reel in slack line, do you have any idea what the problem could be? I took it apart and regreased it and it still hasn’t changed. I am out of ideas.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 жыл бұрын
+Kyle_A_C no worries man.. Lol... Peel off some. And try retrieving with your thumb pressing the side wall of the spool to add resistance. If no chatter or buzz it may likely be something in the level wind mechanism. If you have ever jambed any thing in the level wind you may have damaged something. Try that first
@kyle_a_c2632
@kyle_a_c2632 6 жыл бұрын
Tackle Advisors It’s a little bit less noticeable but there’s still quite a bit of vibration and a sort of revving noise (if that makes any sense) is it possible to use too much or too little grease? And could the worm gear be a reason because I haven’t taken that apart because of the c clip, but I probably could if that seems like it needs to be cleaned
@kyle_a_c2632
@kyle_a_c2632 6 жыл бұрын
Tackle Advisors I used this video to help take it apart (it’s not a tranx but the idea is pretty similar) and I was wondering if the bearing under the idler ever gets exposed to anything or if it’s pretty protected
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 жыл бұрын
The bearing under the idler. Ya mean the one under the worm idler? That one gets gunked up pretty good. Every inch of line rubbing against the levelwind guide having water wrung out and drip down to the worm. Braid dye's, vegetation, dirt, goose poop...lol...which is why sometimes bushings there are better.

Sorry I missed the reply on this one earlier. Has the reel been serviced. I've found if some of the small spacing washers aren't installed, or alligned properly. It can put a side load on some bearings. This reel doesn't use any bellvilles. So there may be a missing shim near the handle shaft bearing.

Likely a result of the braid slipping on the spool. That's very common. The click is the level wind still gong back and forth but clicking when it changes the side that the line interacts with it

because it adds no perceivable benefit when on the water, and it only serves as a point of failure. tiny sealed bearings in saltwater rust the same as tiny non sealed bearings. For freshwater...fire away with all the bearings you want......but 99% of the tiny bearings available don't roll as smoothyl as a well fitted bushing.

@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Saltwater is different...verrrrrry different. And do you want it to last like new. corrosion x oil is your best friend...so is a little dropper bottle. If you hit it with raw water washdown.....that could do some serious damage. if you dunk it....same. If it stays dry and only sees water coming off the fishing line....then a light spray down with water......and a drop of oil on the x ship bearing and levelwind after a few trips should be okay. And if you want like new and you fish quite a bit...2x per year. Tear down is best. And that's fishing 3-4 times/ week. And if it starts getting sticky or tight.....address it immediately.
