I watched this movie with my wife, son, and his friend and we had a blast. No of us are really ultraman fans but I had seen some of it a few times and knew that it was big in Japan and had a big fanbase. We likely missed the in-jokes but we loved this movie and we immediately tracked down Shin Godzilla to watch in the future. Great review and I hope they keep Ultraman coming because it was great.

I just watched this tonight at an IMAX theater. I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. Maybe a bit long but I really enjoyed the humor which I found natural and not forced like in the Marvel movies. I recall humor, maybe mostly unintentional, in the original series. My biggest complaint was the lack of verbal sounds from Ultraman while he fought like "Swatch!".

I grew up with Kamen Rider so I was never a Ultraman fan. Not only that, I not a fan of big kaiju…. Decades later after experiencing Shin Godzilla, I then began to appreciate kaiju films. Yes I did watch 2014 Godzilla and Pacific Rim and enjoyed them but it still didn’t make me love kaiju films. What I’m trying to say is Hideaki Anno’s masterpiece Shin Godzilla has change my perspective about how kaiju film should be made or maybe I’m just a fan of this SHIN universe. After experiencing the masterpiece Shin Godzilla after it’s US release. I learned that Hideaki Anno will be involved in another project called Shin Ultraman. Because of how much I love Shin Godzilla, I became excited for this Shin Ultraman. When the first look pictures came out I was so excited. Months after when the teaser came out, It immediately got me hyped up for Shin Ultraman. I’ve been waited eagerly for this film to release in the US. After experiencing this greatness yesterday night I got to say. It’s so freaking badass!!!!!!!! I’m a Ultraman fan now will be looking forward to this Shin Ultraman universe. I still don’t know about watching any other Ultraman properties beside Hideaki and Shinji’s Shin Ultraman though. I’m so intrigued with the Planet of Light and how their rules works. From what was explained in this film has got me want to know more. Zoffy to me was badass in this film for what he meant. For Zarab to forfeit just because he saw Zoffy is enough for me to think Zoffy must be badass. I can not wait for the future of Ultraman. My most anticipated film of 2023 is Shin Kamen Rider. I’m dying to see what Anno does with my childhood hero. 🤩🤩🤩🤩

Thanks for the video! I saw that Shin Ultraman was playing at my local theater, looked up reviews, and found your post. I knew the OLD series from when I was little, but haven't really followed the character since, only recently becoming re-acquainted through the Netflix animated series, which is worth checking out imo. I skipped your review portion for after the film, but between this and another youtube recommendation, decided to shell out some bucks to see it on the big screen. The other video is called "It makes Shin Ultraman 10 times more enjoyable! 6 Ultraman Episodes you must check!" I had an afternoon off that day, and watched about four of the six recommended episodes, and indeed the movie was WAY more enjoyable for me because I could "get" the in-jokes, of which there were SO MANY. Like Yamato 2199, it is chock full of recreations of classic moments that help you appreciate just how much Japanese visual fx have matured. Without that primer, I probably still would've enjoyed it, but I think I would've been somewhat lost, especially towards the end. Shin Ultraman is a reboot like Yamato 2199, but ALSO a very loving homage at the same time. For the record, those six "must see" episodes are Operation Ultra No. 1, Katokutai Move Out, Lightning Operation, Brother from Another Planet, The Forbidden Words, and Farewell Ultraman. I didn't get to see Brother... skipped The Forbidden Words, and only skimmed through Farewell Ultraman because I was running out of time before the movie started, but it REALLY enhanced my enjoyment tenfold, as suggested, because SO MUCH of Shin Ultraman is comprised of reimaginings of what was in those adventures. For the FIRST TIME since I started watching kaiju movies when I was a kid back in the 70's and 80's, I actually asked myself HOW DID THEY DO THAT? I knew I was watching "guys in suits," but it looked SO MUCH BETTER. Your inclusion of some of the behind-the-scenes footage showed me that it was DIGITAL guys in suits, and the result was a pretty eye-popping experience that I wasn't expecting from a kaiju film. I agree that it was surprisingly hilarious as well - clearly a movie made by nerds for nerd culture - and it was also surprising to see so many cuts in the film - very "American" in its pacing - for better or worse. Personally I found it inventive and fun all around, a solid homage to this classic character. Seeing it on a big screen was NOT a waste of time or money. I got my money's worth for sure, and that's saying a lot in an era when my expectations are pretty high thanks to Cameron, Lucas, Spielberg, and Marvel. It DID feel like an anime compilation film somewhat, but that's my only real criticism, and honestly, if it weren't for anime compilations, I might never have been able to see some of the more classic Japanese anime series to begin with. Shin Ultraman definitely works as both a reboot and an homage; highly recommended. Thanks again for the video!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment this! I'm so glad you were able to get out to see it the other night and enjoy it. I have my criticisms but really, I enjoyed this movie when I got to see it again the other night just as much I did in NY. As time has gone on, I've grown to like the movie more and more. It was definitely less jarring to have the episode highlights/many monsters knowing how the narrative was going to be told.

Had the fortune to catch it in my country, and boy, was I impressed by what the crew did. They managed to nail not only the story of Ultraman, but modernize it to a tale of humanity, at both our worst and best. The episodic thing does feel a bit odd and overwhelming, but it still built up to an overall narrative and emotional conclusion. An Ultra fan will definitely enjoy some of the classical SFX and references, but I thought the whole thing manage to sell itself well to both new and old fans of the series.

I re-watched it last night as well and had a great time. I will say the simulcast in my theatre did not have a full surround sound presentation. @@TheHighsea likewise thank you for responding to my comments. I saw shin Godzilla a few years back but the auditorium was more crowded and loud, in comparison the viewing experience from last night was pleasant. Yes the screen was a bit small and the sound wasn’t great, but the 1st fight scene between ultraman and kaijin already hit me hard emotionally and I thought that scene alone already exceeded my expectations. @@DaiSenshiMounir Saw and enjoyed the Dubbed Version. With the single exception of a character whose voice sounded like American TV news anchor Tom Brokaw - like, I wondered if THE Tom Brokaw had taken a second gig doing voice overs - I was never taken out of the experience. I actually believe that Mephilas is the true villain of the film. They already hinted at his existence early in the movie and was also the stimulus to Zoffy's annihilation plan. Problem is, like you said, a lot of info in the show was dropped in an exposition line, so it get brush off almost instantly because how packed your mind already is with all the information they're giving out. After the first two Kaijuu fight, two SSSP member noticed how the two Kaijuu (and another similar looking one from the prologue) are bioweapons that can be modified with interchangeable parts, which hint at an existing mastermind. And Mefilas himself confirmed this when he said he unleashed those monsters to lure Ultraman out and also make good use of Zarab to instill the feeling of powerlessness in humanity. Perhaps all he need is a lil more presence to not feel like new rando villain.

I like Shin Godzilla more, the government and the people's perspective is more fitting and more interesting for that movie. This one made me actually sleep, for the talky and government stuff and hallway walking and talking scenes, it also isn't fitting for Ultraman to have that kind of style. It should've went from a more MC perspective and side characters and one villain (traditional way of story telling). It also feels like a copycat of Shin Godzilla too, for trying to be government and political. In Shin Godzilla, Shin Godzilla is a main threat, the story revolves mostly on him and how to kill him. In Shin Ultraman, you have this frankenstein's monster of a story, let's kill the kaiju, oh another kaiju, Ultraman is a villain?? Oh it's fake, MC girl went big, fight that kaiju, zeffu?? Fight him!! To save the planet. Now I wanna watch Ultraman Nexus, I remembered it was pretty dark Ultraman series.
