Played the hell out of this game when I was a kid, I definitely had the 1.0 cart with Godzilla and Spider-Man and etc. in it, too. One thing I remember from this era was plugging my Genesis into the TV in the other room via Composite instead of RF and the difference in picture quality was amazing, well, for those days, anyway. Also, around the 10:45 mark, if you keep killing those guys that come out of the revolving door, they do eventually stop, they aren't infinite spawns from what I recall.

This was one of the first games I bought for myself after getting my Genesis. It took me awhile, but I eventually beat it. The original game I bought did indeed feature Batman and the "fleshy" Godzilla. It wasn't until I got my 6-Pak cartridge that I realized they removed Batman, and skeletonized Godzilla.

I've had a couple of different revisions,. Had the original and one right after they changed Batman (Spider-Man would turn into some weird creature) and they changed Rambo... but never seen the skeletonized Godzilla. Looks like it's ROM hunting time lol.

I never owned a Genesis, but it would've been awesome to play this game and find out that Godzilla, Rambo, Hulk, Terminator, Spider-Man, and Batman were in it. Even funnier, is if you owned this version, and a friend owned a later version, and seeing the shock on their face would be priceless.

There was some TV show back in the 90s that gave video game tips where one episode featured how to defeat the final boss of this game. It was a short clip but one thing I remember was the voice over guy describing the falling stone and if it reaches the bottom, "Naoko is No mo-ko". Nunchucks lack the reach that a three section staff affords the user. As a kiddo, it took me years to beat it... years longer to good ending it. This is among my fav childhood memories... :) Still, learned much on this Vid I never found myself all that time ago... one thing I did find it seems like ya might not have: There's times when you're standing on stuff like Boxes while an enemy's below... more than once ya missed a chance to take'em by goin to the edge & duck-kicking them down... then ya didn't have to jump over them & gamble on if ya could turn around & get'em before they turned around & managed to hit you first. Nonetheless... nothing was more useful a tip/trick then the one revealing that this game was actually available on Steam! Now that I know of this, I MIST HAVE IT!!! :O Thank you so much for all the work & effort to these Vids... so many more Games to cover as well... Amazing video can't imagine the work this must have taken! This game took me about 20 years to beat as I gave up on it and came back and beat it as an adult. My kid self could never even get to the final boss because I'd get frustrated on the maze level. I easily beat Shinobi 3 as a kid but this one couldn't. As an adult got the bad ending first time and then read up a bit about the boss and came back and got the good ending. The sword and whip guys you and just go up and melee them no need for shurikens.

One of the first games I played on my genesis back in 92. I was only 6 and found the game too difficult to play so I threw it aside for years. Finally when I was about 13 I decided to play the game again and the game is very difficult for first time players who don’t know what their doing and don’t know the time on the double jump. What kept me playing the game over and over again was the amazing soundtrack, every levels music just got better and better and I just kept playing it over and over again hearing that music. Fast forward 20 something years later and I beat the game maybe 30 times with both endings and it is one of my favorite games of all time and one of if not the best soundtrack on the genesis. The Shinobi series in general is one of my favorite series ever, Shinobi 1 and shadow dancer are great arcade style games with a trial and error learning curve, shadow dancer on genesis is the definitive way to plays the games, the game gear Shinobi games are great because you have different Shinobis for each level and they all do different things to adjust to the level, Shinobi 3 has it all with beautiful graphics, great level designs and fantastic music, Shinobi legions/X is an often overlooked game with great gameplay mechanics, high difficulty and 2 very good soundtracks depending on the version you play. The ps2 games took the essence of Shinobi and put it in a 3d environment and did it very well and Shinobi 3ds did a solid job of bringing the series back to its 2d style roots.

I like how the dogs in this particular thumbnail make it look like it's Shadow Dancer. They fit right in. Another fun video guide. Even though I've played the game and have my own strategies, I learned some new approaches that I may or my not use. Even taken on their own, learning where all the hidden power ups are is super worthwhile. It's worth mentioning that some enemies, like the samurai that block with their swords can be manipulated based on whether you're standing or crouching. If you don't want to do melee attacks, you can toss a kunai on one level, such as crouching, then switch to standing before it gets to him, or vice versa. I enjoyed this video. Thanks.

Pretty comprehensive guide with all the item locations being noted, good stuff for sure. Some other things worth mentioning: 27:00 Regarding Hulk/Terminator (Hulkinator?), an alternative strategy is that you can use the Ikazuchi magic as soon as the fight starts, then just wander on up and stab him to bits with melee attacks. It destroys him in seconds and is a great way to save on kunai. If you're feeling extra spicy and don't have any magic available (or just don't want to use it lmao), but do have the POW, with good timing you can even manage to wipe him out before he has a chance to charge! 32:13 It's possible to stand on the edge right-side of the raised section which the second pod rises from, turn to the left and just use melee attacks -- the travelling sparks don't climb up onto that section at all for some reason, so there's no panic or pressure in dealing with pod 2.

The Master System port of the first Shinobi added a health bar, and a power up system where your throwing weapon and melee weapon would change based on how many hostages you rescued. It's different from the arcade version where said powerups are just for the level, and you have more weapons over all. You also get live bar extensions, throwing bombs that bounce and move in an arc. You also have to complete the shooting range mini games if you want to get any ninjitsu. I've heard or read somewhere that Sega Changed Joe's outfit to white because someone on the dev team thought that black was "A badguy color" or something to that effect. Rather dumb if you ask me, but hey, it helps him stand out in the over crowed world of ninja media, which is bad for a ninja, but good for business. Hibana, the main character from the PS2 game Nightshade, which is the sequel the PS2 Shinobi game, also wares the white and red color scheme. Also, Nightshade was called Kunoichi in other regions, which is what a female ninja is called, making that name fall more in line with the rest of the series. Honestly, I've never really liked the cameo bosses for a few reasons. 1) It feels either lazy or uncreative 2) It kinda gave me a sense of "My OC can beat up all these other dudes! And 3) Why are these guys even fighting joe? I mean, I can somewhat understand Spiderman since the Bugle often frames him as a villain, and it could be a misunderstanding, but a lot of these make no sense, and that just overrides any "rule of cool" for me personally. Don't know if they were inspired by Ninja Gaiden or not, but I've heard that the Game Gear & Master System Ninja Gaiden games where developed by the Shinobi team at Sega or whatever, so there might be some "cross pollination" if you will. Though, comparing Shinobi to Ninja Gaiden is an Apples to Oranges type of comparison, with Shinobi III being the one game that seems to come the closest to Ninja Gaiden. I played Shinobi III before Revenge due to 1) not having my own Genesis at the time and 2) Shinobi III being on a Genesis collection I bought for the PS3. I found it to be one of those situations where it's kinda hard to go back to an earlier instalment after playing it's sequel first. I did eventually get into it, but I still think III is better. Ninjas dressed as nuns? So, NUN-JAS!...I'll see myself out now...

What is so memorable about this game was it was one of the first games that had a “bad” ending. I don’t recall any NES games they had a “bad” ending… they just seemed to happen on Genesis. For me as a 12yo beating this game was tough. I only did it once as a kid and despite trying my best to toss my shrunken in the hole I just couldn’t beat him fast enough and although I won… I lost. I remember being a little emotionally damaged by that. Other Genesis games that had bad endings were Streets of Rage and while not a “bad” ending… Phantasy Star 2 had a real mind F of an ending that didn’t make me feel great. Phantasy Star 2 from a dystopian standpoint has a lot of relevance given current times. People have done videos just on the plot and ending of PS2. Also… while not an optional bad ending… Legend of Zelda - Links Awakenings ending really did a psychological number on me.

Just like that, I can use Mijin infinitely, which makes my life also infinite. I think there was a time where my life count to 0, I chose to use Mijin so my life turned back to 9. I don't know if you take requests, but ever consider doing Konami's Mission: Impossible for the NES? It's a great game that plays like a more fast-paced Metal Gear, and it definitely lives up to its name, as it's one of the harder games in the NES' library. I think it would be a perfect game to cover on this channel.

Having beaten Mission Impossible sometime last year, I will second the request. Question: can a game of tic-tac-toe prevent mutually-assured nuclear destruction?

SNES Drunk just made a video on it, though his are five minute highlights and not a walkthrough. Great channel, anyhow. 👌

I remember the first time I solved RoS - Joe got to shop vac his fiancé up off of the floor. Replayed the game to get the good ending later on; not many console games I replayed in the past especially ones with multiple endings. RoS was definitely unique and was in fact the game that sold the Sega Genesis to me so their marketing concerning the platform and game worked on me at least. Good vid and commentary - the sidebar with tips was a nice touch too.

Early Genesis/Mega Drive games were the first games to introduce the concept of winning the fight but losing the war to my child self.

@@Loader2K1 Must agree agree with you on that point; it was not until the Genesis/Mega Drive that I remember any multiple ending games and I had quite a few by that time. RoS ticked all the boxes for me with Ninjas, cool audio and stunning graphics back in 1990. Sold off my NES and a library of around 200 games and bought the Genesis with RoS on the same trip to the shop. Sega brought many "PC" gaming concepts to the console and it was fun, took stuff to the next level, but also show third party devs that the platform could facilitate a great deal more than any before it. The Genesis/Mega Drive evolved gaming reducing the gap between console and PC.

I loved playing this game as a kid. Great game that proposed a great challenge. And is that a new puppy?!

Loved this game and had it when it was new somewhere around early 1990. Great videos, still praying for you to do Phantasy Star II, Final Fantasy IV and VI

With all the little tidbits to find and point out in PS2, that would undoubtedly be his longest video ever. I share your enthusiasm friend, but I'm not sure we want to put UCBVG through that. lol

I remember I got the bad ending on my first completion of this game because I couldn't figure out how to beat Zeed quickly enough. I didn't know what on Earth was going on, the boss looked very unorthodox indeed and it didn't make sense that I couldn't hit him when he'd chucked his hair away from his head and just stood there with his body exposed. It felt like cheating at times the way he'd throw it. With all that distraction, I didn't realise what was going on in the background until it was too late, which I'm guessing was the entire point of making the battle so awkward and drawn out. Remember being a little upset by the ending, it was a bit sad really, caught me off guard, as it started to sink in what you were viewing in the night sky.
