I definitely agree with the concept of Judo being a great martial arts for self defense. Being from New York and using public transit, you never really know for sure what situation might come about. Just knowing that your 1-in shape 2- familiar with someone trying persue or grapple you 3- have a nice tai Otoshi You can always keep calm and control the situation better.

Well bjj guys tend to start on the floor, but don't do many takedown as such, but out on a concrete floor if a judoka throws someone on a concrete floor my guess is that's ur submission right there, don't think many people would be quick to get up for more after that in which case u be gone by then so for self defence I think judo is extremely effective, especially against ur typical thug or bully who more than likely won't have any training in any of the arts, otherwise he would be more respectful and not start a fight with u in the first place.

I think there are 5 rules for self-defense. 1. Don't be there 2. Leave 3. Get help, it's not your job to solve the world's problems 4. Talk your way out of it 5. Fight Great podcast. Appreciate your input. This matters.

a complete martial art should have both practicality and spirituality. its more than just self defense or being healthy

I think that each individual should be a MMA (mixed martial artist, as in, do different arts and specialist in them). But as MMA have it, its more a combat sort and very geared to go on the ring or octagon, therefore being much like BJJ when dealing with the 'mystical streets'. Also, with MMA, one could be a 10th planet BJJ black belt and a brown belt in GojuRyu, then you open your MMA gym, because you have the striking from GojuRyu and the Grappling from BJJ. Start teaching. Or one could have gone 50% curriculum in 3 or 4 arts and open an MMA gym. The students themselves may never really know the full extent of an art. If its boxing, if its wrestling, if its BJJ or Judo or MuaiThai. The student will only know the 50% that that specific instructor has learned and passes opposed to going and doing various arts and really learn from the art itself the principle and techniques that it has to offer. When MMA came out, it was promoted as "it has the punching from boxing, the kicking from TKD, the grappling from BJJ and elbows and knees from muni thai". When you watch experts of each of those arts, one knows that its not true. So yeah, each art has its own grace and teaching, do those that match your goals and your body type... Great podcast
