Unfortunately, all the products for headlight restoration are temporary for a few months at most. I got tired of repeating the process and went with new headlights and put LEDs in to help keep the temperatures inside down as the halogens get real hot inside the enclosure. Has been 10 years and the discoloration is not as bad as it was with only 8 years on the originals. Mine is a 2005 Silverado and plan on keeping it till it falls apart. Good job keeping the boys in line and fed

I have two 2005 Silverado’s, both are so hazy that you can’t see the deflectors.. one has 350,000 miles. I have only replaced exhaust bolts and a battery on that one and of course the a/c blower unit issues they all have .

The cloudiness is oxidation on the surface of the plastic. Restoration involves simply removing the oxidation layer. I use a two-step process using McGuires compound and follow that up with McGuires polish. The cloudiness does return after a couple of months, but you can always repeat the process and it's a lot more cost-effective than using the headlight restoration "kits" or replacing the lenses. Older lenses not only turned cloudy but turned yellow as well. The yellowing is caused by a chemical reaction between the plastic and UV rays from the sun. Newer lenses are made from UV-resistant plastic, so they don't turn yellow but they do still get cloudy.

Clear coat after polish maybe? But McG is a great product.
@Casmige
@Casmige 10 ай бұрын
Actually? Not quite. From the OEM manufacturer? There’s a thin UV overlay gets put onto all the headlights & it’s the subsequent roadway abrasive degradation of that UV overlay that finally exposes the plastic substrate underneath which is what oxidizes.
@shrodingerschat2258
@shrodingerschat2258 10 ай бұрын
@@tobbex7372 It depends on the plastic. If you've got the older lenses that turn yellow, then yeah, hit it with some clearcoat, but make sure it's UV-resistant clearcoat. I don't bother with clearcoat on mine, and they don't turn yellow.

Why don't the manufacturers make them out of glass the way they used to be? The slight extra weight of glass is inconsequential in the scheme of things.🤔

The best way is to use a headlight restoration kit that has sanding disks that get increasingly finer as you go to actually sand off the oxidized plastic, usually starting with about 800 grit and ending with about 3000, then use a polishing compound, and finally finish with a good ceramic coating. This will usually last for about a year or so.

3M makes a Heavy Duty Restoration kit and it works for removing the Oxidation. It comes with the sanding and buffing discs/pads and the sealer when done. It is a 4-5 step process but worth it.. I took it a extra step and used some scratch removing car compound and polish at the end when I restored some head lights on a 2005 Golf that had 80% oxidation. Came out crystal clear. Just make sure to wet sand and follow the directions.

You can get the same kits in the UK. I've done it a couple of times, well worth the effort. The lubricant trick only lasts for a short period, whereas the restoration kits remove the oxidation and replaces the UV protective layer, so it lasts a lot longer. In my case, its about 18 months.

Yes, the 3M Heavy Duty Restoration kit and the 3M Headlight Clear film will protect the lens from oxidizing. I just polished my Acura TL headlights and applied clear film last summer. There is a video comparing protective spray to the 3M clear film. The film has no affect on light direction.

That oil/headlight trick is very temporary. The first time you wash the car or drive in the rain, it will wash off and the cloudiness will return. Using penetrating oil is a used car dealer trick... quick and cheap improvement... but very temporary. A longer lasting fix is to polish the plaatic covers and then coat them with a clear UV protectant. (The polishing removes the original layer of UV protection.) Something I haven't tried, but looks like it would be much easier is Cerakote Ceramic Headlight Restorer. Supposedly it doesn't require the polishing, simply wipes on, and works similar to what the oil did. But unlike the oil it cures to a longer lasting coating. Once it cures (24 or 48 hours) it's claimed to last for quite a while through rain, car washes, etc. It also claims to have UV protection and costs about $20 at auto parts stores for a bottle large enough for a number of applications. The only reason I haven't tried it is because every vehicle I own has glass headlights, instead of plaatic. Glass never gets hazy the way the plastic does.

The cloudiness on your headlights is both oxidation and from the reaction with UV (Means your UV coating on your headlights has worn thin or is gone), and from micro abrasions from sand and dust and other road particulate being thrown up against the front of your car which wore groves into the headlights similar to that of sandpaper, can get a kit from an auto parts store that includes some sandpaper and a new UV protectant sealer for your headlights to keep them Nice n' shiny, sure ray would help you out if you asked.

One trick I learned in auto body is using sandpaper that you can put in water it’s over 1,000 grit so it’s really fine sandpaper and have a towel soaked with water and take the wet sandpaper and start sanding and there will be a milky film that comes off which is normal and take the wet paper towel over and keep putting water over to keep it from drying and damaging your headlights and after doing it for a few minutes each headlight you can use the buffer and buff it out Won’t look 100% like the day they were put in but saves some $$

As a couple other commenters have said, this is temporary at best. I use MeGuiar's Plastx. It's a polish made for such things. I redo it about every 6 months, and it works great. But no matter what you dop, DO NOT USE A PAPER TOWEL!!! Being made from wood, a paper towel will scratch the plastic. I use a cotton waxing pad.

Walmart and I'm sure other places have a kit that cost about $10. It has a cloth with a cleaning, scrubbing liquid on it and the other has a protectant on it. You scrub the lens with the one. Wash it off and then go over it with the protectant. It last a few years . There are other far more expensive kits . I have used one that came with a buffing wheel that fits a drill and a cleaner\buffing compound .

@Wife Unit, wow 40°F in FL, that is cold! I've never been there before but I'm on this end of the map too and it was 30°F this morning but the next couple of days is supposed to be 60's for the high YAY! As for the headlight trick, I'm not a chemist but I think the effect is "similar" to wax making "scratched" paint look better where the wax fills in tiny scratches increasing transparency in the way the light refracts thereby making the paint look "clearer" so I'm guessing that whatever is in that lubricant is making those "tiny scratches" in the plastic more transparent. Funny, I think those are the words of near every "wife unit" about her "husband unit" - "I can't believe he bought that...."😄
