I love how Shinzen tries to connect the worlds of spirituality and science, and this idea seems truly worthy of research. The identification with the psychological self-story stands in the way of seeing one's true (non-personal) nature. But seeing one's true nature dismantles identification with the self-story. I can imagine that when we can temporarily disable identification, during that period it's much more achievable for someone to discover their true nature and/or dismantle their beliefs in the self-story, by way of meditation and therapy, as Shinzen says. In my experience, it's important to prioritize seeing one's true nature over dismantling belief in the self-story. The latter without the former can lead to depersonalization/derealization.

If the ultrasound version of this ends up working then it needs to be trialed for PTSD. Put someone temporarily in arhat mode and then do a round of exposure therapy while they're perfectly tranquil, reconsolidating their emotional experience of that state over the traumatic memory. That's probably the best use I can think of that doesn't require it to also be trainable, because it gets a lot of value out of a short period of altered functioning. Maybe do trials on phobias first - easier to get ethical approval - and then if that turns out positive you can justify it for PTSD on the argument of benefits for human fear extinction.

I am curious if athymhormia patients exhibit something closer to descriptions of actual freedom attainers than arahats. The inability to jumpstart personhood made it seem similar.

Oh and if you mean to keep nirvana permanent then for one that did not think it existed you are overreaching. Once it occurs it is no longer necessary. Was recently introduced to Osho. I suggest you check out his opinion on the saints vs sinners. Also ask yourself why they say the last problem for the bodhi is the ascetic.

What is the potential for abuse of any successful research into this? This is an important question to be asked, particularly given our current social state where exploitation, domination and subjugation reign supreme. I would add that the ideas outlined here are not unique and have been expressed before. I know, it always seems special when you come up with something by yourself, it seems special doesn't it? Like an epiphany but alas that's an illusion. The basic idea of a techno solution or augmentation to aid meditative practice and the path to enlightenment is not new by any means and that, at heart, is all that this chap has stumbled upon. I mean no disrespect by saying the above but that difficulty and struggle is the path and seems to this minor mind a prerequisite in any genuine enlightenment endeavour. How to spend one's time? Well, perhaps ensuring the continuity of the species is one and perhaps preventing civilisational collapse and the inevitable great suffering another. But who am I to suggest how 'minds' should spend their time?
@raza2542
@raza2542 4 жыл бұрын
He's got a plausible *implementation.* That's a lot more than just the idea that enlightenment-facilitating neurotech would be nice to have in abstract. And frankly, the latter is already a very promising idea on its own, all the better if people thinking in that direction aren't too rare (and they're rarer than they should be, because spiritual people tend to be unreasonably averse to biophysical reductionism and scientists tend to be unreasonably averse to enlightenment). What you're saying about epiphanies is a useful psychological lesson that every serious meditator needs to learn, but it can't be your *only* response to the experience of an apparently great idea. You do have to actually do the math on the potential benefits of following up on your idea, acknowledge the potential it has when your dopamine rush has settled, and work with it if it is still worth getting excited over then (which IMO this idea is). Or at least, if you want to do more with your life than achieve your own enlightenment. Reflexively thinking 'Ah, this feels like a great idea again! Nevermind it, let go and return to the breath.' is good for your meditation practice but otherwise risks throwing babies out with the bathwater.

Why don't the enlightened become politicians? Of those suited for the task of governance you would think that enlightenment would be an awesome tool to have?
@para_bellum_1984
@para_bellum_1984 5 жыл бұрын
I've thought about this. I've worked in politics and I considered going back and actually running for MP of my country. But once you're at a certain stage of awakening, enlightenment or self-actualization, maybe even self-transcendence, you realize that politics are just as trivial as most other things that occupy conventional society. I asked myself, how would it make any sense to become a political leader if I'm just happy here by myself? I can help and love others as much as I want and can, without necessarily being a leader. I think producing spiritual and developmental content on KZbin these days is probably more influential anyways, that's why we love people like Shinzen :)
@para_bellum_1984
@para_bellum_1984 5 жыл бұрын
I would like to add that if politics is something one is passionate about or if it feels like being a political leader is some kind of calling, I see no reason why the enlightened shouldn't walk that path. It's just one of those things that people feel they should be doing, regardless of how many people's lives you touch. On the other hand, wanting to influence people, however benevolent, is an egoic pursuit.

How does "inner awakening" as a way of life be suited with the current Political scene? Politics is about deceiving, confusing, misinterpreting, evading by any means opposition while retaining the power to oneself, not stating the truth ... Awakening is about giving up power and any form of outward control and becoming the model of humility intro daily manifestation. I mean, i also don't "go out much" but keep in touch with the actual social situation ... A guy like Shinzen for the masses is PURE INSANITY :)) He would be LITERALLY gibberish to many groups of people ,,, Like the Clare Graves spiral dynamics model of human psychology describes (good info if you're not familiar with ) how a "blue" orientated person will consider Insane a "Yellow" or "Turquoise" type like Shinzen, from Whom`s viewpoint a Blue is clearly the "insane" one but with a fundamentally different understanding of that stage.

Para Bellum but we should be able to take on any job. I understand that teaching is important. I like shinzen too. But actualization of zen involves exposure in all arenas. I noticed a funny thing at my old job. Freaked me out a bit until I understood it. People gravitate and learn from one that has attained and learned. Their behaviour and attitude begins to change. So while it’s great to wait for those that seek it is also good to be a beacon in the darkness. Maybe not much gets done in a single lifetime but over longer periods of time I don’t see why not. But definitely understand the hangup. I personally like to work in the medical field. Would be ideal if I could move every three years. That’s how long it takes before the effect is strong enough for me to point them in the right direction and disappear before I start to have too much influences. But that gets old so I wondered. What next.

The Machine meditation does not mean to abstain from society. That means taking part in the political process is as valid a position as taking one in the medical field. This is the way it’s always been is not evidence it would not work. But I can understand what you mean. You also have to notice that everyone is kinda born ignorant. Then they get taught things and they develop world views. The system games itself. People respond more to clickbait media and politicians are forced to keep up. Lots of good people probably don’t even want such positions because of that and others take advantage. It’s a complicated reality and while much improvement is necessary one could also say that one could not expect reality to be otherwise given global history and all it has to tell about the circumstances we presently find ourselves in due to the fact that no one was born with an instruction manual on how to be a human being and how to get relax inside the human body.

I called it free will. Would you put a price on free will? I can standardize it as long as you will not put a price on it. Oh and my method does not result in mr.m. But it could result in nirvana. Mr.m sounds like he reached nirvana in the wrong place and the wrong time. I hope he is well and if not my condolences to his family. No lesions required either. No such side effects with my method either. How's Leo doing? Would go smoother if I was there takes longer through online contact. I made my hypothesis at the age of 15 I awoke in the wrong setting though. Took a while for the return. Pictures 8,9,10 are real in the ten ox. And mine is safe. If a bit unorthodox. I am patient zero.

Levitation 0.0 thanks but I would rather have an opinion. Especially on mr.m that troubles me. When I reached nirvana the same could have happened to me. Once I was pulled out of the state though i wanted to live. I still do not fear death but I also do not want to die. It's like being at peace with shit happens. Plus you should be aware even if I flip it does not necessarily imply anger. It could be frustration or despair or a myriad of other things. To pin down an emotion one would need to be face to face in my opinion. Even then the pinning down would not explain what is occurring in the mind. That is the nature of interpretation.
