Does it? The implication to me was that Theseus is taking the ship completely apart and then rebuilding it with similar, functionally identical parts. Seems like a leap from asking if a ship replaced one piece at a time is the "same ship". I guess the answers are similar. Physically no, ideologically, yes if you really want it to be.
@Nepeta-Leijon3 ай бұрын
@@sieda666 i like it cus its basically asking "is your answer the same if it's all replaced at once?" imagine a house burns down and is rebuilt identically in the same spot and the same people move back in. is it the same house? honestly, i think it is, which is interesting!
@OhhCrapGuy3 ай бұрын
@@sieda666 In the original, Theseus's ship has to be repaired over centuries due to wear and tear, and they doesn't want to get rid of the ship, and, at least to some degree, they consider it his ship the whole time, despite each part of the ship having been replaced at some point. In this version, he wants to get rid of "his ship" so he takes it apart entirely and builds a completely separate ship out of different parts entirely, creating a gap in the existence of "the ship". The two narrative structures have NOTHING to do with each other, but the fundamental question of "is it the same ship" remains. Not only that, but reasonable people can disagree about whether or not this is even the same philosophical question, because Camille has some exactly the same thing to the narrative as it could be argued Theseus did to the ship, just on a shorter timeline. There are LEVELS to this that are just amazing.

i am reminded of my third trip to mt. whitney. each time hiking through its dry paths or, twice (even at the tail-end of summers), patches of snow - and with a different set of friends each time - there were flat rocks i'd passed over on the way that had at least on one prior instance turned my ankle, and so i had come to recognize them again as those same slightly tilted and/or irregularly spaced obstacles. this well-maintained place has a name; and it changes, overall, very slowly - even as we kick around small bits of eroding stone going on to the top. does the forest service ever plant new trees? do wild animals (the coyotes, deer, and marmots) you come across wander off and die, far from where you met them once? i know the elevation measurement has gotten more precise. and i'd like to believe that the stream winding from the waterfall at 10,000 feet still feels refreshing. sometimes when you visit there's rain; sometimes hail, with thunder and lightning. makes you wonder about the nature of creation, objectification, repurposing, management, subjective experience, geologic time and temporal time ... in the future, the artist will simply point at a thing and call that "art." (or simply claim it as "his," "hers," "theirs," "mine," "yours," or "ours"). can't say i blame Heraclitus. only his parents for his name.
