Very well explained dear sir. I had the pleasure to sit for many of your lectures. I take it that the calculation is based on Force 10 wind conditions. Approx. 55 knots. In case of very large Pax ships, say windage area of 14k + meters, will the same calculations apply. Recently I experienced about 70 knot with gust upto 75 kn. The heel experienced was much less (thankfully) than what the Napa load computer showed. Just wondering if the computer was calculating correctly. What I was interested and want to ask was, how much wind (just approximately) would I be safe to take on the beam (300 m long ship x 25 m from half draft to air surface centroid). (The stability manual doesn't provide much info since the ship is 15 years old and did not need this criteria when it was built. The new manual has at best not very good information as I can gather)

Dear Deep, 504 N/mt sq is approximately gale force approximately 40knots. How much your ship heeled will also depend on the stability or GM of vessel. A general thumb rule should be that because of wind alone, the permanent list or heel should not be more than 80% of deck edge immersion. To find out if your ship will satisfy the criteria, the normal 4 tables which are provided and the two formulae can be used. Thanks for viewing.
