Got our conex a few weeks ago. The good news, no rust and rust is unlikely. We live in the desert, less than 12" rain per year. Bad news. We live in the desert and have to be mindful of what is stored in the conex because it's over 115°f for several months. Will be installing powered vents to draw out hot internal air, only to draw in slightly less hot air, lol.

Nice job, my Pop has a woodworking shop in one and to keep it cool in the summer he actually put 2x 4's framing on top with a tin roof on top of that that is slopped a bit helps with leaks and keeps air space between the container and the hot tin roof, works great.

Thanks. This red shipping container gets so hot in the summer that I'd swear you could powder coat cure in it. Good idea with the roof over.

I'm prepping my shop for winter and noticed a door gasket had been seeping slightly. Since rain doesn't fall upwards I cut a couple of pieces of 2" angle (it was free and handy, flat stock or channel would work too) and welded it across the top between the corner fittings, positioning it to clear the door latches of course. It's an easy way to solve that problem on old containers. I'll get a section of proper door gasket too of course.

Looks like you'll be busy, isn't it amazing how quick nature wants to reclaim stuff. At the beginning of the video when you showed the roof I thought man that looks pretty good,,lol I guess you do have to look close. Take care

Rust never sleeps! Here in FL we get a lot of rain, heat and high humidity which is a perfect environment for rust. It is a constant battle.

If I owned these, I spray the same material that truck beds are covered in. Problem solved. Good investment.

Containers are Sumotomo cor-ten steel with copper. Its very limited in paint grades except marine grade epoxy. The English has a rust killer called Kurust. Anyway the Australians make a water based paint called "Metalfix" by Phoenix paints which is possibly the worlds best paint for severe conditions. Dont use and zinc plated steel on copper as it reacts then you get more rust.

I'm fixing to purchase a container like that I say just replace the whole top with new tin and it would have 40 more years of life plus, with about a 6 inch overhang that would be perfect.

The roof is part of the structure removing a 40ft piece of steel and replacing it would be an absolute nightmare. Better to wire wheel (on angle grinder not drill!) grind out any rust patches, weld as needed, then paint with epoxy mastic paint, then top coat with a tough enamel

Using the wire brush is right. But you should have cut the rust out get some mild steel sheet. Then cut a larger piece then weld that can be overlapped, doesn't matter. Then silicone the inside to fly seal. This will rust the sheet you screwed on top, and as it's not sealed it'll leak again.

You need to treat the underside too, othwerwise it'll rust from the inside out.

Kool deck is a concrete topping, what you want is Kool seal.

Good idea using that zinc roof technique. The reason it's hard to drill on that metal is because container companies are required to repair it with corten steel but obviously it's no longer use for export so that zinc works well. I just bought a 20 ft and I will cover the roof with that roof tar sealant. That's what the lady that sold this container told me.

@@jackpeacock118 I never did, it's still behind my house. I did paint it with two coats of green rustoleum paint and it holds well. Another benefit I noticed is that the two coats of paint avoided the roof leaking drops of moisture that settles in the early hours due to condensation. My ebay inventory is dry.

Can you use glassfiber on a shipping container? I want to convert an open top container into a pool, so thinking glassfiber But not sure if it will work ?

If you’re going to patch the roof like this. You don’t need to stop there you need to go ahead and address all the rust and just tar the whole damn world. You’re not even thrown a Band-Aid on a cut you’re putting a piece of toilet paper on a cut. Taring the whole roof Would be the Band-Aid. Truthfully you need to cut out those rust spots and re-weld some panels then tar the whole roof. As it is you may be able to get 5 to 10 more years out of that container without addressing the problems
