Shipping Container Welding and Patch Repair

I make repairs on an old rusty container.

I good tip I was given is use a bottle jack and 2x4 to slightly bend the roof upwards. Not a lot, just enough to prevent rain from puddling for months of the roof. I painted my roof afterwards and it's been great going 3 years with no puddles, no rust.

I got a sheet of 1.5mm cold rolled steel, welded it fully around the perimeter, i used gas shielded wire for the welding .8mm any areas at the end that curved down i was able to bend or hammer down with a chisel if it was a tight bend or dent. Tack it every 8 to 10 inches, then welded between the tacks 8 to 10 inches at a time, skipping a section, weld a section skip etc. Worked out well it was water tight, I put a coat of paint on it when I was done. It was the cheapest way I could find to do it, proper patch panels were to expensive for the size of the area i had to cover, and it wasn't worth spending a bunch of money on a container so old.

A friend of mine had tared the whole roof on this container nine years ago and still in good shape.

Expensive and messy but, effective. I went the cheap way.

thats called an over lapp for fast repairs . i mostly cut it out an just make it flush

Yup, 16 gauge plate, a hammer, and a machine that can weld at low amperage and anyone can do the job 👍

Hey I do as well but I'm VERY new to welding and my boss doesn't teach me anything so my welds come out REALLY bad on shipping containers. Do you have an email I can message you at to get some technical information on repairing semi trailers/containers

Just curious about the repair longevity, has it held up? I work for one of north americas largest container storage companies and we have to use Cotten type B steel for the repair if not an entire roof panel. I’ve seen repairs using mild steel fail faster than 2 years.

All of the repairs are still holding up. No leaks...yet.

Good to know man! I’ve patched so many holes this year that weren’t welded ( roofing tape, caulk, screws, flexseal, jbweld, tar ect...) glad you saw that coming and chose the right way!

I have used hat cold galvanize before it works good.

Thanks. I have had many people suggest that option to me. However, I encountered some kind of rubberized spot repair that had been done on this container in the past and it was a real pain to remove it to get at the rust bubbling up underneath it. I had visions of trying to remove that stuff off of the entire roof and I decided against it. But, if properly done it might be a blessing. I will need futher info to let you know for sure.
