A good type of seal to have aboard are dowty seals. Another way to get a copper washer is to find a piece of copper tube close to the diameter of the banjo bolt, and cut a short length off the tube, perhaps as much as 4 to 5 mm, do the heat annealing trick (heat the tube ring to cherry red then quench in oil). It doesn’t have to have dressed ends as this should crush down with the ends rolling outwards to make as near to the original copper seal as you can get. If the only copper tube size you have was larger, then do the same as above but put an O ring on the inside of the ring, and when it crushes down it will incorporate the o ring and effectively make a dowty seal, which is a metal ring with a rubber lip seal on the inside. This is like solving problems for astronauts on the Moon or Mars.

Making a gasket. One can make a cardboard gasket, if one has a hydrometer with a bulb on it. One takes a piece of cardboard and cuts it to the shape of the required gasket, and place it in a shallow dish. Put some battery acid on it, and leave it for as long as possible but a couple of days works OK. Wash the gasket thoroughly, and soak it in a little baking soda solution fior a few minutes, then wash again thoroughly. You now have a really tough cellulosic gasket. Why sulphuric acid toughens cardboard I have no idea--I just know that it does. Used without the acid treatment, cardboard tears very easily. One can make copper crush washers from copper wire, if you have a gas stove to heat the ends and fuse them, then anneal the copper after hammering the joint flat. You can also make them by winding the copper wire into a ring, then use soft solder to make it a crushable ring. That will hold any pressure, but you need to have some soft solder aboard in your Boatswain's Locker. I carry all sorts of miscellaneous stuff around as spares, but it is astonishing what one can find just walking along some shorelines. For downward pressure, as long as one has a flat stainless steel washer to out on top of your fabricated washer, and some effective form of gasket sealant, almost any twine can be made into a ring, soaked in nail polish, then used to seal a fitting. It is a get-you-home, but for any water join under low pressure it is fine. High pressure use the aluminium (folded beer can body) or copper wire plaited or fused and treated with varnish ring washer. You make them as if you were making a miniature rope quoit for deck games, making a ring then winding more and more wire around itself until you have at least three strands, Then run it with soft solder if you have any. If not, tighten it less, and rely on the nail varnish or the Gasket Cement. Hylomar is an excellent product in this regard. That woven copper washer covered with a flat washer takes a little crush load, and the varnish helps seal it. In my Boatswain's Locker I kept Hylomar, plus a bottle of Power- Plus Gasket Cement--but a bottle of clear nail varnish is OK, and is quick-drying. Silicon Rubber might work too.

I'm an offshore sailor for most of my life I single-hander traveling the world and also a professional yachtmaster I dived the wreck of the coolidge for a number of weeks in 1985 with Alan Power., the first to explore the site and who moved permanently to the island to keep exploring it. Alan worked very hard over many years to get it designated as a national park and historical treasure so it would b protected. We even discovered new rooms in the ship in our dived - which were all exploratory decomp dives. I have been subscribed to your channel since you started particulArly enjoying your honesty and your ingenuity fixing problems and have sailed most of the places u have been to. But I am shocked at this dive you made. The ammunition you were playing with is all still LIVE and you are lucky you were not injured or killed Plus thus ship is a protected national treasure & historic site - look but don't touch (would you yank the bones of a dinosaur off in a museum and play swordfight?). It breaks my heart plus encouraging others to dive in this manner - and to portray the dive as recreational encouraging others to dive it is dangerous these are advanced decomp dives

Gotta love crush washers, but ya heating up the copper is called annealing. It's relieving the stresses in the crystalline structure of the copper from the initial installation. Forging knives and such would lead to cracks without it. Copper is very soft, but still so small of a part it can reset maybe once or twice before its mechanical properties fail. Hope that helps, safe travels.

If you need a gasket or perhaps a replacement for a crushed washer, aluminium foil is worth a try. Fold it into a sheet of multiple layers and lay the sheet over one surface of the thing you want to seal. Classically you gently tap around the edge with a hammer, angled to make contact with the edge. This can actually cut the gadget shape or mark out a line to cut with scissors or a sharp blade. Good luck.

If it's only dripping and not gushing when the engine is running, the JB weld could fix it. Just remember to clean it all the way around and degrease it with brake cleaner, rubing alcohol, nail polish remover, or hot water and dish soap, or a cocktail of these. Then roll a bead around the leaky bit, rub it in and let it set before running the engine again. The plastic one is better bcz it's still a bit elastic when dry. It holds vibration better.
@Clayne151 Жыл бұрын
But it might be next to impossible to get it off again though.

@@Clayne151 old chisel and a hammer. Or a flat head screwdriver, those a handy multi-tools too. A good quality cutlery knife has done the trick every time, sometimes needs a bit of help from death wheel for a better edge, but every time, every epoxy product and most of aluminium castings. And the best part is, if the bead holds, then it holds. As long as the oil stays in, the engine runs.
@donnordstrom31 Жыл бұрын
I know this is weeks behind, but you mention a banjo fitting on your oil leak. A banjo fitting uses two washers, one against the block and one at the bolt head, a PIA to do blind. Annealing is what that's called with the resetting of the copper washers. I've never annealed copper washers in thirty years of wrenching. I've replaced them when they get squished to much, but never heated them up. If you're doing a drain plug or fill plug that you've lost the gasket for you could possibly find teflon plumbers tape to seal the threads directly.

Amazing! My father in law Young Lee in 1932, emigrated from China, Hong Kong to San Francisco on the President Coolidge. The voyage took five weeks. He and the other Chinese passengers were down in the hold. They ate their meals on the lower deck sitting on the floor around a large pot. At San Francisco they took all the Chinese immigrants out to Angel Island. He said he stayed about six weeks before he was cleared to enter the country. (They were trying to find any excuse to deport Asians. We did a tour there 20 years ago. The young guide was trying to make it sound like a concentration camp. He kept interrupting, "Ah it wasn't too bad" They didn't let the kids go outside or play, "There was a swing set right outside over there." The food was bad and not enough, "Oh it wasn't anything special but you could have seconds." She was a bit beside herself, but he'd been there.) During the war he served in U.S. Army in Hawaii driving around a major in the Quartermaster corps. They let all the Japanese Americans in the Hawaiian Islands out of detention after two weeks - otherwise Hawaii would've just stopped. But they still treated them badly. 'You grow the food, but we won't give you any gas to get them to market.' He arranged with his major to make that happen. I recognize that steering wheel. That's a Willys Jeep. If we are adventuresome we will inevitably cross the paths of all the other adventuresome people, just not at the same time. So you and Dan crossed paths with my father in law -- just 89 years later. It's a big amazing circle. He'd have loved my sailboat, no long walking, he could sit out side and smoke. A big TV. Everyone together. My mother in law would've like that it's a yacht. I was thinking about learning to dive. Now it's a lock. Thanks Holly. "A metric shitload of pomplamous" "Re softenized" !!? Curly of the Three Stooges would've said, "Ah! Technical language." This may be your most signature episode. It's great that Dan is as nutty/happy as you. Get some calipers or at least measure those things. Find the part number. Then one of us will air ship it to you on the next island. Usually if it's less than $10 anywhere in the world there's no customs duties or delays. (And unless it's really big less than $10 is what goes on the shipping form. I just shipped something to a friend in Canada.) So what if it costs one of us a hundred bucks. We're not on the boat but we're onboard. What do you need and where will you be?
