Japanese name for Date Tech is Date Kogyo, so Dateko is just a short version of that. And with Aoba Johsai i believe the first kanji in "Aoba" and "johsai" put together forms Seijoh. So basically they're just short versions of the school names

Yes kinda... the "Ao" Kanji in Aoba (青) can be pronounced as "Ao" or as "Sei" (青春 = Seishun) and then the "joh" Kanji 城

The Japanese for Date Tech High is Date Kōgyō Kōkō, so Dateko for short. As for Aoba Johsai, this is from their wiki page: "The school's shortened name is 青城 (romanised as Seijō or Seijoh). It comes from Aoba Johsai's first and third kanji being put together. 青 can be pronounced as Ao (ex. 青写真 (Aojashin) - Blueprint) and as Sei (ex. 青春 (Seishun) - Youth.) The most common pronunciation for 城 as a standalone word is Shiro and Jō when it appears in names of castles. In English, it translates to "light blue castle". So i think it's mostly like a visual/verbal pun, and also just makes it sound more natural and casual
