ANATOMY In the psychology of the modern civilised human being, it is difficult to overstate the significance of the house. Since as early as the Neolithic era, humankind has defined itself by its buildings: buildings for washing, buildings for socialising, buildings for protection; even buildings for the commemoration of the dead. But of all the structures that mankind has invented for itself, there is little doubt that the house is that which it relies upon most completely for its continued survival. The house is one of the key elements that separate modern humanity from its more primitive antecedents. No other creature goes to such lengths to create lasting, permanent shelter for itself, nor regards such shelters with such reverence and import. Why do human beings of our modern age foster this tremendous sympathy toward their homes? There are many reasons, of course, but it is perhaps due in some small part to seeing them as a reflection of ourselves. The anatomy of the house is such that this analogy is less superficial than at first it may seem. To carry it further, if we were to dissect the house, as we might a human cadaver, we would find ourselves able to isolate and describe its various appendages and their functions in a decidedly anatomical fashion. There are even a fair number of direct comparisons to be drawn between those organs of the house and those of the human body. For example, let us examine the living room: often the dominant space in a house’s ground level, as well as typically the centre of activity in a well-populated home, the living room is very much the heart of the house. While a human heart circulates blood to oxygenate the extremities, the living room circulates people, activity, communication. It is the room most likely to be found beating, as active and vivacious as its name would imply. The comparison is only strengthened when we consider also that the living room is most commonly the room to contain the fireplace, making it additionally the locus of actual, physical heat. It is easy to think of the kitchen and dining room as the stomach or digestive system of the house, though this comparison is tenuous. By contrast, the function and analogue of a bathroom should be immediately obvious. The hallways and corridors of the house are its veins, providing circulation, coursing throughout its frame. A staircase bears more than a passing resemblance, both physically and symbolically, to a spine. The windows of a house serve much the same purpose as eyes, and anyone who has ever rounded a bend, or a long drive, and come suddenly face-to-face with a tall, dark manor will tell you that it is difficult to shake the impression that the house, through its lightless windows, is a creature capable of vision and intelligence. The bedroom is, perhaps, the room that most eludes direct comparison in this fashion. At a stretch, and allowing for a bit of poetic sympathy, it might be said that the bedroom is not unlike the human mind, or those parts of it which dictate thought and imagination. In the bedroom dreams are dreamt, passions are ignited, and epiphanies are experienced in the cold sweat of early hours. In the bedroom is where people invariably spend the majority of their time, though comparatively little of it whilst conscious. And yet, this analogy is an incomplete one, for obviously the mind is an exceedingly complex thing. If the bedroom represents the thinking, dreaming part of the brain, then it is the basement that represents those lower, unconscious parts. The basement is dark. It is buried. It is a place full of cobwebs, where memories are stored. A poignant comparison, truly; often, the unnerving uncertainty that comes with considering the deeper aspects of the human psyche is not unlike gazing down at the swelling blackness pooled at the bottom of a basement stairwell. It is a place we spend our childhoods filling with monsters that will lay for years in patient silence. It is a place that, barring some specific errand, we seldom ever want to go. Of course this comparison, though appropriate, is a very heavy-handed one, and often the basement is little more than a storage space, littered with the corpses of spiders and woodlice. Though poets and psychoanalysts no doubt dread the thought of a dark basement, in truth it is the bedroom - the waking mind, that place of dreams - which is actually the most frightening of all. It is here in the bedroom that we are at our most vulnerable. Each night we shut our senses to the world for hours at a time, trusting in the house to keep us safe until next we wake. In this state of extreme vulnerability we will spend something like twenty percent of our lives. Anything might stand beside us, watch us, keep us company until dawn, and we would never perceive it. We can only pray that the house will not let such things carry on as we sleep. In this way, during these hours, the bedroom seems less like a mind, and more like a mouth, for it is here that the house is most likely to betray us. It is here that we place ourselves most at the house’s mercy, and spend each night hoping that it will not bite down. I dream that there are teeth growing all over me. They are everywhere on me, and in me, like… cysts, or bone spurs. I can scratch at none of them because I have no hands. I look out through the bedroom window and I see a truck approaching. A young man steps out, approaches and enters through the front door. His body is covered in swollen cuts the size of quarters. He’s walking through the downstairs hallway and laughing, and begins urinating on the wall. He spits on the carpet. He’s moving through the first floor, breaking and upsetting things. He goes to the basement and stands at the top of the stairs. I’m angry at him, so I slam the door and he falls down. I can feel his bones snapping. The cuts are bursting, oozing old, dark blood everywhere. I can feel him being ground up, dissolved and torn, splitting and shredding… but I leave the door closed. I close my eyes and try to sleep. The teeth continue growing on me until there is nothing left of me but… teeth, and gum, some sinew. There is an important distinction that must be drawn between the words ‘dissection’ and 'vivisection’. A distinction that would appear to be lost on you. The worst of us can listen, and yet at every turn you have pried, you have prodded, and you have interfered. Have you not been paying attention? Did it not occur to you that as a vermin existing inside of a greater organism, your intrusion would be felt? And still you harassed. And now, like the wayward spider who witlessly stumbles upon a sleeper’s tongue, you will be swallowed. Because the truth is this: when a house is both hungry and awake, every room becomes a mouth. What happens to a house when it is left alone? When it becomes wan, and aged? When its paint peels, and its foundations begin to sink? When it goes for too long unlived in? What does it think of? What does it dream? How does it regard those creatures who built it? Brought it into existence, only to abandon it when its usefulness no longer satisfies them? They grow lonesome. It may stare for long hours into the darkness of its own empty halls, and see shadows. In its heart, they jump as it thinks, 'Here! Here is someone again, I’m not alone!’ And each time it is wrong, and the hurt starts over. It may haunt itself, inventing ghosts to walk its floors, making friends with its shadow puppets, laughing and whispering to itself at the end of some quiet cul-de-sac. It may grow angry. Its basement may fill with churning acid like an empty stomach, and its gorge may rise as it asks itself through clenched teeth, 'What did I do wrong?’ It may grow bitter. It may grow hungry. So hungry, and so bitter, that its screwbolts dissolve and its doors unlock themselves. While a house may hunger, it cannot starve. And so, in fever and anger and loneliness, it may simply lie in wait. Doors open. Shades drawn. Hallways empty. Hungry.

In the 10th paragraph, the one about teeth and cysts: was it cuts covering the young man? I heard "ticks," which might make more sense when being described as "the size of quarters" and "bursting." And does the house get 'wan, and aged" or "worn, and aged?" Good transcription, though! I missed the first part of the house's tirade before the house bit down. Anyways, a hearty welcome to everyone else rewatching the Shitstorms in anticipation of Shitstorm VII!

This channel feels like a gravestone. We visit. We reminisce about our favorite memories by watching old videos and playthroughs. We laugh, we cry, we get angry, we get scared, we feel brave, we feel huge. We quote our favorite jokes, skip past our least favorite bits. We forget about all the bad in the world, and we’re simply living in this perfect, imaginary one. But at some point, reality kicks back in, and we must face the truth: the whole, wonderful experience we were just in... was one-sided... And, we do the only thing we can. We say our goodbyes and end the visit with, “Until next time, Friends.”

I feel like the people here who are whining about the game being boring are a lot of the reason a lot of modern horror sucks for me. Like, personally, I felt like this game was fuckin' fantastic. True psychological horror done in a really tense and terrifying way. It feels kinda like too many modern horror games and movies use jumpscares as a crutch, and it stops a lot of them from achieving their true potential. Not to say that I "hate" jumpscares or anything. I just feel like they change the atmosphere of a game or movie from really terrifying to something kinda hokey that wont stick with you at all. I know this probably isnt the majority opinion at all, since jumpscare-centric horror keeps getting made and masses keep paying for it, but it kinda bums me out that shit like this is so rare and underapreciated.

"What happens to a house when it is left alone? I need scissors. 61!"
@Nymphonomicon8 жыл бұрын
"Houses are alive. This is something we know. News from our nerve endings. If we're quiet, if we listen, we can hear houses breathe. Sometimes, in the depth of the dark night, you can even hear them groan. It's as if they were having bad dreams. A good house cradles and comforts...a bad one fills us with an instinctive unease. Bad houses hate our warmth and our human-ness. Yet, isn't a house supposed to be a place of shelter. It’s the body we put over our bodies. As our bodies grow old, so do our houses. And as our bones sicken, so do our house's foundation. But what happens when mad and disturbed people lived inside a house? Does their madness and pain creep into the rooms, the walls, the corridors, the very boards? Does their emotions linger on after death? Don't we sometimes feel those maddening emotions reaching out to us, haunting us? Does human tragedy cause bad houses to be born? A bad house's blind hate for our humanity is what we say when we use the word "haunted". Is that what we call a place that is cursed, unquiet, spooked, festered up with roaming spirits? We say haunted, but what we really mean is that the house has gone...insane!"

Shitstorm 1 was very subdued, mostly being just text for a lot of episodes. Shitstorm 2 has a classic feel of what I'm going to say about the new one. Shitstorm 3 had style, but lacked substance, although I'll admit it just being them playing games makes that one a gem. Shitstorm 4 was the most artsy, but never felt like it really fit (aside from the spooky spirit) This new one does a really good job blending Horror with Comedy, and I think that evokes feeling of the channel. It's a shame 2Snacks does such good work, considering how unprofessional these fuckers are.

I think you're some equivalent of the guy the house talks about walking in and basically mocking the place by pissing and spitting in it; that's kind-of supported by Pat trashing the plates and the like, brazenly wandering the halls, etc.

I was about 3 years old when my family moved out of my childhood home. I didn't remember much of it, but my vague haze of memories were generally positive, and those were reinforced by a smattering of family photos. But over the years, I lived relatively near that home, and I got to see it decay. The people who my parents sold it to sold it again, and those folks did so again, and it ultimately ended up with someone who was clearly renting it to less-than-reputable people who themselves were renting it to others who basically lived in a crudely-partitioned section of the basement. And, 24 years after moving out, I was suddenly in need of a new home (seriously, if you have a dehumidifier, Google its serial number. You're not going to get any other warning if there's a defect that may make it burst into flames), and... ...well, there's a reason I could get my hands on this place a bit shy of my 30th birthday. It was a wreck. It had all the hallmarks of a haunted methlab. But far worse than that was something that this video echoed: a sense of hunger and desperation. On some level, I felt genuinely scared of living in this house again, and doing so alone was pretty much a secondary concern. My fears were rooted in other things. They were rooted in the layer of carbon-ash that turned your soles black within seconds of walking on the basement floor. They were rooted in the knee-high stickers in the attic that spelled 'SOPHIA' in a gentle arch, as if to remind me that a child almost certainly had to live in the nightmare my childhood home had become. It was rooted in the literal roots of the veritable jungle that was trying to devour the house and the garage. My dad and I spent the better part of a summer wearing jeans, boots, gloves, hats, and masks as we tore through layer after layer of thorns, poison ivy, and 'trees' that were basically just weeds that had been left to grow for a decade or more. The two of us did basically everything we could do without immediately endangering ourselves (ie, trying to rewire the house) that we could before we ever even considered hiring anyone to help with the restoration. It was pretty damn difficult. And for no small amount of time, I was terrified (being reasonably self-aware of depression catalysts) of ever actually living in this house... ...but then, I wasn't. And oddly enough, this video helps reinforce that. Call me arrogant, but I like to think that this house is, if not happy, then at least content to have someone like me back inside it. For all the abuse it endured in my family's absence, the house feels like...well, like a puppy. It doesn't blame us for the things we didn't do, and all it can be is happy to see us back. And on our side of things, I'll be damned if I let it go back to the way things were between our occupancy.

@KATinBLACK3 жыл бұрын
That was amazing. That's great you guys cleaned things up and you and the house are happy now. Based on stories landlords have told us while renting from them, and what's happened to my grandfather's home, there's always a chance of your house getting fucked by renters who a) punch big holes in the walls, b) grow weed/make meth on the property or in the house, and c) burn, tear, or permanently stain the carpet. At one place, the landlady told us all the above and more was caused by previously renters and the house needed an overhaul. It felt pleasant while we were there. I guess homes really do feel emotions after all

holy shit dude, this is such a good no-budget thing. it spends the whole first playthrough making you think of a house like a human body, so that when shit starts going wrong, it feels like body horror or w/e. then the tapes start describing ACTUAL body horror in really disturbing detail, and the house gets REALLY fucked up. that’s so fucking smart

this is like virginia lee burton's "the little house" for psychopaths but goodness, this is an effective horror game. it leads you on a tour of a dark house, giving you a sense of fear of an unknown but also familiar setting, and twisting it into a living, breathing entity, because what's scarier than an abandoned house? a house that *feels* abandoned. and people often give life and personality to everyday objects (for example, giving memories to an old toy or photograph).

You kids might not be aware of this, but cassette players would not work unless you were crouching on top of a wooden table.

Damn, what a way to kick off the Shitstorm, by making me afraid of HOUSES. THE THING I SPEND 90% OF MY TIME IN.

Y'know, we give Pat a lot of shit for being a dumb coward because he is one, but I gotta give the guy credit because, despite literally being given an out at the 20 minute mark, he still kept going for another half hour until the game was completely finished. That takes guts that I don't think I would have had if I were in his place. That said, I of course can't wait for another month of his brave man yelps this year. Roll on Shitstorm 6: Knee-Deep in the Shit!

For the majority of the video I wanted to run out of my house and never come back but that last tape made me want to apologize. To my house. And THEN run away.
