I have a friend who is "the popular girl". Many people hate her but I just feel bad for her because her parents are never around. We've been friends for a long time and they only showed up to like...maybe one of her birthday parties and even then they were there for 2 hours and then went somewhere else. The truth about being the quiet kid: •People assume you're not listening because you don't interact, so they have no issue talking about their own secrets in front of you. •There are some people who believe you're gonna, let's say, reenact "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People. Use that to your advantage when you want some entertainment or answers. •However, most people just assume you're an mysterious student with a mysterious life. So when you speak, they'll be more likely to listen. Out of curiosity, if not genuine interest. •Teachers tend to like you more because you don't interrupt class, turn in all your assignments on time, and ask for help when needed •You still get friends, you just have to remind them that you're grateful for them sometimes. They tend to be real ones bc the fake people won't be patient for you to open up (Also, I haven't been involved with stupid drama since I became a quiet kid. Highly recommend)

It's become a little bit easier and less scary over the years for me to talk to other people, especially after I got a job and had to interact with my co-workers and customers on a daily basis, but.. yeah. I still don't have much confidence when it comes to this kind of thing. I agree with you- the only way out of where I've gotten myself is to toughen up and be the one who makes an effort to approach and befriend the other person. Tbh, the idea of doing this terrifies me, but I know that if I wait on someone else to approach me first every time, I might be waiting forever. I've given up on having friends in highschool, because I know I'm moving five states away for college soon and I don't see the point in making friends I'll probably never see again, but I'll keep this in mind for the next time I meet someone I really admire and want to be friends with. Wish me luck.
