The depth at which this game is played fascinates me. It's obvious nintendo only intended this engine to be used wild clusterfuck fights. Yet people instead learned how every variable worked and turned it into a game with this much subtlety and openness of play that it's likened to starcraft. The importance of the stage from the ledges, to the platforms, to the space available makes competitive Smash more interesting. Many other fighting games pretty much only have one stage (w/ simply a change of background). Corners and walls are manipulated in other fighting games as well but those games are of course still fun.
