In my opinion, “Ring Of Ice” is a song where Jenny's unique voice grabs you (as with many of Jenny's songs). Jennifer's outstanding, powerful voice, which is deep and effortlessly reaches the high notes without ever becoming shrill, is in my view a unique selling point. One of the reasons why her first album sold over a million copies in Germany alone and went double platinum, and why the story in Germany, Europe and many parts of the world continued to climb steeply with the second album (1.6 million sold in Germany).

And yet she never caught on in the UK ("Power of Love" aside.) I always found that mystifying!

@@darrenbertram7289 I always found that mystifying too. I've never been able to understand why Jenny hasn't had the same outstanding success in the UK as in many other countries in Europe and around the world.

@@aquila_oculus520I think the UK’s musical tastes were very much aligned with the US - Jenny’s bombastic euro beats and operatic voice were just at odds against music from the likes of Annie Lennox and Alison Moyet. It’s a shame, but then I always felt a frisson of excitement that she was all mine and no one else’s 😏

@@darrenbertram7289 Darren, I think your analysis is pretty plausible. As a result, you really did have far fewer competitors in the UK. 😉

2:54 - that caught your attention! "No, not the bass, listen to ME!" 😂 After the unprecedented success of the "Power of Love" which took four months to get to #1 and then stayed six weeks at the top spot (much to the chagrin of some Norwegian guys) there was the question of how to follow it. They went for "Ring of Ice" which, as Lofty mentions below, did not do as well, only making a polite entry in the top 30. The follow up, "Madonna's Eyes" didn't even make the top 50 and she wasn't to have another hit in the UK until the duet with Elton John off the "Heart Over Mind" album. Which just shows the UK and the rest of Europe are poles apart! Anyway, I have to say I love your musings on song titles, it's what kept me following you in the ABBA deep dive - most of the times you were correct in your assumptions. Next is "Into My Dreams" - this is the 'raise the roof of the barn' song you've been waiting for! 😁

Hi, Ring Of Ice reached no. 1 for 2 weeks and spend 27 weeks on the South African charts, it was the 4th best selling single of 1985, the 2nd single The Power Of Love was no. 6 and was still no. 2 on the charts in Dec 1985. Her album charted for more than a year and only Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA and Dire Straits Brothers in Arms sold more in 1985. This song is still very popular and is in my top 10 favorite songs from the 80s, I also like Animotion's 1986 single I Engineer, reached no. 4 here. It's also one of my personal favorites. The single version of Ring Of Ice has a more updated sound than this version.

Loved this synthy bop but it didn’t do well in the UK!

I remember hearing it on the radio a lot at the time - so I always assumed it was "the other hit"
